If your iPhone keeps turning on and off, first identify whether it is repeatedly restarting, shutting down and staying off, or showing an Apple logo with a progress bar during an update or restore. Those symptoms have different causes and fixes. Start with charging checks and a model-specific force restart; if the problem continues, check Battery Health or use recovery-mode Update before considering Restore, which erases data.
1. Identify what the iPhone is doing
Watch the screen and note when the problem occurs. This helps distinguish a reboot loop from a shutdown or an iOS process that needs more time.
- Apple logo appears repeatedly: The iPhone may be restarting in a loop. Try the charging checks and force restart below.
- The phone powers off and stays off: Check its charging setup and, once it starts, Battery Health if shutdowns recur.
- Apple logo and progress bar appear after an update, restore, or erase: The process may still be running. Apple notes that a progress bar can move slowly or look static; do not interrupt it just because it pauses briefly. For a migration or restore scenario covered by Apple’s frozen-logo guidance, wait until the bar has not moved for at least an hour before following its recovery steps: Apple’s frozen-logo guidance.
A force restart is a troubleshooting step, not a diagnosis. It will not repair a degraded battery or another hardware problem.
2. Check the charger, cable, and port
If the iPhone shuts down while charging or will not start, rule out a power problem first. Use a known-good power source, make sure the cable and adapter are connected securely, and inspect them for damage. Check the charging port for debris. Do not use damaged charging accessories. If the phone shows a low-charge battery or still will not power on, follow Apple’s charge-and-retry instructions: Apple’s iPhone charging and startup guidance.

If you try another cable, match its connector and the power adapter to your iPhone model. A charging accessory can help when the existing cable or power setup is faulty; it will not fix a software boot loop or a degraded battery.
3. Force-restart the iPhone with the correct buttons
Use the sequence for your model. Press quickly where specified, and keep holding the final button until the Apple logo appears.

Apple’s instructions and available settings can vary by model and iOS version. If the phone starts but keeps restarting, continue with Battery Health or recovery steps rather than repeating the force restart as a supposed repair.
4. Check Battery Health if shutdowns keep happening
An aging battery can lose both charge capacity and the ability to deliver peak power. Apple says low charge, chemical age, and colder temperatures can make an unexpected shutdown more likely. A shutdown can be intentional from the device’s perspective when it cannot supply the power required, even if it surprises the user.

When the iPhone is usable, look in Settings for Battery Health and charging information; the exact label and available details depend on the model and iOS version. Check for a performance-capability status or a message that the battery is significantly degraded. Apple says an Apple Authorized Service Provider can replace a significantly degraded battery.
Battery specifications are model-specific. For example, Apple says iPhone 15 batteries are designed to retain 80 percent of original capacity at 1,000 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions. 5. Use recovery-mode Update if iOS will not start
If the iPhone remains stuck on the Apple logo or keeps restarting before iOS loads, recovery mode may let you reinstall iOS without choosing the data-erasing Restore option. Apple directs users to connect the iPhone to a Mac and use Finder, or to a PC and use the Apple Devices app. Follow Apple’s current model-specific instructions for entering recovery mode: Apple’s recovery-mode instructions.
- Connect the iPhone to your Mac or PC and open Finder or the Apple Devices app, as appropriate.
- Use Apple’s instructions for your model to enter recovery mode.
- When the computer offers Update or Restore, choose Update first if available. This attempts to reinstall iOS without the erasure associated with Restore.
- Keep the iPhone connected while the computer completes the update. If the process fails, review Apple’s recovery instructions before deciding whether to restore or seek service.
6. Restore only if you accept erasing the iPhone—or get service
Apple’s recovery-mode Restore reinstalls iOS and erases the device. Prefer Update first when offered. Choose Restore only if you understand the data loss and have a backup if one is available. If recovery mode cannot update or restore the iPhone, or a physical button needed for recovery does not work, Apple says service may be needed.

Repeated shutdowns after charging checks, a force restart, and any appropriate software recovery call for diagnosis rather than more restart attempts. Do not open the iPhone or treat battery replacement as a casual DIY step; use qualified service when the evidence points to a hardware or battery problem.
