A Raspberry Pi can save network packets to files for later inspection, but it cannot automatically see every device’s traffic just because it is connected to your home network. What it records depends on the interface selected and where that interface sits in the network. Treat “everything” as the project’s shorthand, not a guarantee.
What a Raspberry Pi network “black box” does
In this setup, “black box” means a computer configured to capture packet data from a live network and write it to a file. Wireshark’s dumpcap manual describes the tool in those terms. The capture file can then be opened in Wireshark for analysis rather than examined only while traffic is live.
The important qualifier is the capture point: packet-capture software listens on a chosen interface. A Pi attached to one network connection does not necessarily receive traffic exchanged elsewhere on the network. The title does not identify a particular topology or capture point, so the exact visibility of this build cannot be established from the hardware description alone.
What the Pi can see depends on the connection
Choose the interface that carries the traffic of interest
Before recording, identify the interface the capture tool will use and confirm that it is connected to the relevant network segment. Wireshark’s capture guide covers selecting an interface and saving captured packets. The available project details do not establish whether the Pi captures over Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or another arrangement, so no particular interface or network design should be assumed.

Wi-Fi monitor mode is not universal visibility
Monitor mode is a Wi-Fi-specific option for IEEE 802.11 interfaces, and Wireshark documents it as available only on some operating systems and adapters. It may also disconnect the adapter from its associated network. That means an ordinary Wi-Fi connection—or an arbitrary USB adapter—should not be assumed to capture all nearby wireless traffic. Check the adapter and operating-system support for the intended capture mode in the Wireshark capture options documentation.
Save captures for later analysis
For a saved record, the capture needs both a selected interface and a destination filename. Wireshark documents pcapng and pcap capture formats; tcpdump and other programs can also create capture files that Wireshark can open. Its file-opening guide explains how to read capture files, while the capture-files guide covers saving them.

- Identify the capture interface. Confirm which interface sees the traffic you intend to record; do not infer network-wide visibility from the Pi’s presence on the network.
- Choose a capture destination. Give the capture a named file and use a supported format such as pcapng or pcap.
- Review the resulting file. Open it in Wireshark to inspect the recorded packets. A file records what the selected capture arrangement delivered, not traffic the interface could not observe.
Use a retention limit for long-running captures
A continuously growing capture can consume storage, so a bounded file rotation policy is preferable when recording over time. Wireshark’s ring-buffer mode cycles through a configured number of files; after the ring is full, it replaces the oldest file. This limits the retained set, but it also means earlier data is overwritten rather than preserved indefinitely. See the dumpcap manual for ring-buffer behavior and configuration options.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Treat packet captures as sensitive data
A packet capture is a record of communications observed at the capture point, so it may reveal information about people and devices using the network. Limit access to the files, retain only what you need, and consider the privacy expectations of everyone whose traffic could be recorded. Rules vary by location and situation; the available documentation does not establish a universal legal rule. Wireshark’s FAQ discusses capture permissions in the context of network use, but readers should check the requirements that apply where they live and operate the network.
