To add a site-wide affiliate disclosure in Astra, open Appearance > Customize > Footer in WordPress, add an HTML or Widget element to a footer row, enter your text, and click Publish. Astra documents this Footer Builder for Astra 3.0.0 and later. For an affiliate recommendation in a specific post, also put a clear disclosure near that recommendation; a footer notice alone may be too far from the link for readers to notice the connection.
Add a site-wide disclosure in Astra’s footer
Astra’s Footer Builder lets you place a notice in a footer row without editing theme code. The Customizer preview updates as you make changes, but your edits are not saved for visitors until you publish them. See Astra’s Footer Builder instructions for the documented setup, available in Astra 3.0.0 and later.
- In the WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance > Customize > Footer.
- Choose a suitable footer row, such as the primary or below-footer row, and select its plus icon.
- Add an HTML or Widget element.
- Enter a plain-language disclosure in the element.
- Preview the footer at desktop and mobile sizes. Check that the notice is visible and readable, then click Publish.
Another option is to manage a footer widget in the Customizer or under Appearance > Widgets. Astra describes both routes in its widget-management instructions.
Place a disclosure beside relevant post recommendations
A footer can give visitors site-wide context, but it does not put a disclosure beside a recommendation inside an article. Add a concise notice in the post content near the affiliate recommendation or link so readers encounter the relationship in context. Use the post editor or your site’s usual content workflow; Astra’s footer setup does not insert notices into post content automatically.

#1 Best Overall
The FTC says a material connection—such as payment or another financial relationship—that could affect how consumers assess an endorsement should be disclosed clearly and conspicuously. Its guidance discusses online endorsements and the importance of making disclosures easy to notice. See the FTC’s endorsement FAQ and its staff article on clear and conspicuous disclosures. A footer plus an in-context post notice is a practical way to address different placements; neither Astra’s documentation nor FTC guidance specifies a required Astra layout.
Example wording
“This post contains affiliate links. If you buy through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.”
Rank #2
This is a plain-language starting point, not wording prescribed or approved by the FTC. Adapt it to describe your actual relationship and affiliate program terms accurately. FTC staff wrote in 2017: “There’s no one-size-fits-all way to make that disclosure, but an unfamiliar abbreviation or cryptic word subject to multiple interpretations probably won’t do the trick.”
Use a theme hook for a custom location
If the disclosure needs to appear in a custom theme location, Astra supports inserting content with WordPress hooks. Its hook documentation demonstrates add_action and includes hooks such as astra_header_before and astra_header_after. The documentation explains the hook mechanism; it does not prescribe a particular affiliate-disclosure implementation.
Rank #3
For custom PHP, Astra points to using a child theme. Avoid editing the parent theme directly: a theme update can replace those edits. Test custom code on a staging copy before putting it on a live site.
Choose the placement that fits the job
| Placement | Coverage | Proximity to a recommendation | Maintenance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Footer Builder notice | Site-wide footer | May be distant from an in-post link | Visual Customizer; publish changes |
| Disclosure in post content | Only the posts where you add it | Can sit beside the relevant recommendation | Edit through the post editor or your content workflow |
| Theme hook | Depends on where and how the hook is used | Can support a custom location | Requires code and testing |
What the guidance does—and does not—settle
The FTC’s Endorsement Guides were revised in June 2023 and address advertising in online and social media formats. The FTC describes them as guidance and says it may investigate potentially unfair or deceptive practices. The guidance does not establish one universally sufficient sentence or layout for every publisher. The appropriate disclosure depends on the actual relationship, audience, jurisdiction, and affiliate-program terms; these steps are practical publishing guidance, not a legal determination for a particular site.
