A smart bulb is usually the better choice for a gradual, adjustable wake-up light; a smart plug is better when you only want an existing lamp to turn on at a set time. A plug controls power, not the bulb’s brightness or color. For a self-contained sunrise alarm, consider a dedicated wake-up light.

Which option fits your morning routine?

Your goal Better starting point What to check
Have light brighten gradually before a set wake time Smart bulb or other compatible smart light Confirm the model and app support gradual wake or sunrise scheduling. Some bulbs also let you adjust white color temperature; not all do. Google Home’s Gentle Wake Up guidance describes gradual brightening on eligible devices.
Turn an existing lamp on at a set time Smart plug The lamp’s own switch must be left on. The plug supplies scheduled on/off control, but does not make an ordinary bulb dimmable or change its color. TP-Link’s Kasa KP401 guide explains scheduled switching, including location-based sunrise and sunset times; that guide is for an outdoor plug, not a bedside-lamp recommendation.
Use a standalone sunrise alarm, possibly with sound Dedicated wake-up light Check the alarm’s light progression and audio options. Philips describes both for its HF3650/60 model.

Can a smart bulb simulate sunrise?

It can, if the bulb and its control app support gradual brightness changes or a sunrise routine. A tunable-white bulb can also shift the light’s color temperature, but that capability is model-specific. For example, TP-Link lists its US Tapo TL135E as a dimmable, tunable-white Wi-Fi bulb with sunrise and sunset modes. The vendor specifies 1%–100% dimming, a 2500K–6500K white range, 1100 lumens, and 75W-equivalent output. TP-Link also lists Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant voice control and direct Wi-Fi connection without a hub; these are specifications for this model, not every smart bulb. See TP-Link’s product information.

Google Home Gentle Wake Up

Google Home and Nest Help says Gentle Wake Up brightens lights over 30 minutes to imitate sunrise. Its instructions cover smart lights, switches, and plugs configured with device type “Light”; a device without color control can still brighten and dim. Google says the feature is currently available only in English. Its instructions also say you can use a voice command to schedule wake-up lighting up to 24 hours before the routine starts. Check Google’s setup and compatibility guidance for the current steps and commands.

That support for some plugs does not mean every smart plug can dim a lamp: the plug switches power, while gradual brightness depends on the device and setup supporting the feature. Check the model’s compatibility and how it is configured in Google Home before relying on it for a wake routine.

Can a smart plug dim a lamp?

No. A standard smart plug turns the connected lamp’s power on or off; it does not add dimming or color-temperature control to an ordinary bulb. Choose a plug when timed switching is all you need and the lamp can be left switched on. If gradual brightness is important, use a dimmable smart bulb or another compatible smart light instead.

Plug setup and electrical limits vary. Aqara’s US Smart Plug page, for example, says an Aqara hub is required and lists Apple Home, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa support. It gives a 15 A limit and maximum supported power consumption of 1875 W. Those figures apply to the listed plug; check the rating, hub requirement, and smart-home compatibility of the exact model you plan to use. Aqara’s US product page also describes using scheduled control for lights and appliances, including a coffee machine.

What to check before choosing a smart bulb

  • Gradual wake support: Confirm that the bulb, app, and smart-home platform provide the fade-in or sunrise routine you want. A schedule that merely turns a bulb on may start at full brightness.
  • Wall-switch state: A connected bulb generally needs power at the fixture’s wall switch to remain reachable and controllable through its smart features. Check the product instructions for model-specific behavior.
  • Brightness and white tone: Verify dimming range and tunable-white capability if you want to adjust either. TP-Link’s TL135E specifications are one example, not a category-wide guarantee.
  • Connectivity and ecosystem: Check whether the bulb connects directly to Wi-Fi or needs a hub, and whether it works with the assistant and app you already use.

When a dedicated wake-up light makes more sense

A wake-up light is an alternative if you want sunrise simulation without putting a smart bulb in a room fixture. Philips describes its HF3650/60 SmartSleep Sleep and Wake-Up Light as increasing over 30 minutes from soft red through orange to bright yellow, with the option to finish with natural sounds or FM radio. Those are manufacturer-described features of that model; they do not establish that sunrise simulation treats a condition or reliably improves health. See Philips’ HF3650/60 product page.

How to decide

  1. Choose a smart bulb if your priority is a gradual, adjustable light and the specific bulb and app support the routine you want.
  2. Choose a smart plug if you already have a lamp and need only scheduled on/off control. Make sure the lamp stays switched on and the plug’s rating and compatibility suit the connected load.
  3. Choose a wake-up light if you prefer a separate sunrise alarm with optional audio rather than relying on a room lamp and smart-home setup.

The cited product and platform pages describe features and specifications, not independent comparative results. They do not establish that either smart plugs, smart bulbs, or sunrise simulation improve waking, sleep, or health.
