1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIn February 2013, SecurityWeek reported that SpeedTest.net had been compromised to serve malware. Citing security vendor Invincea, the report described injected JavaScript and a Java-based exploit associated with the g01pack exploit kit. The article said the incident had been cleaned up by the time it was published; it does not establish anything about SpeedTest.net’s security today.
What SecurityWeek reported in February 2013
SecurityWeek’s February 5, 2013 report relayed Invincea’s analysis that SpeedTest.net had temporarily hosted a Java-based exploit. Invincea said potentially many users had been exposed. Its analysis reportedly found JavaScript injected into the site and the g01pack exploit kit, and assessed that the compromise was likely part of a malvertising campaign.
That is the extent of the technical account supported by the contemporaneous report. It does not identify a malware sample or attacker, establish a specific Java version or vulnerability, or provide a complete exploit chain. The original Invincea post linked by SecurityWeek is not available in the sources accessible for this account, so details beyond the article’s attribution cannot be verified here.
Was OpenX responsible for the 2013 attack?
Not according to what was confirmed in the report. SecurityWeek noted Invincea’s prior findings of compromises involving OpenX, an advertising plug-in, but quoted the firm as unable to confirm whether OpenX was used or exploited in the February 2013 incident. The report therefore does not support attributing the 2013 entry point to OpenX.

How the 2013 report differs from SpeedTest.net’s 2011 incident
A separate episode was reported by ABC News in October 2011. It described legitimate ads carrying instructions that launched fake “Security Sphere 2012” antivirus promotions. The promotions could lock up a visitor’s PC and demand payment for bogus protection. ABC News attributed to Ookla COO Doug Suttles that engineers detected and removed the problem within three hours.
In that 2011 account, the criminals were said to have corrupted legitimate ads as they arrived in the OpenX ad-handling program used by SpeedTest. Suttles said: “We were surprised someone got in. We quickly stripped it out and locked things down.” Those details belong to the 2011 episode, not the 2013 Java/g01pack report.

| Incident | Reported delivery | Attribution and remediation |
|---|---|---|
| October 2011 | Legitimate ads carried instructions leading to fake antivirus promotions. | ABC News attributed the account to Ookla COO Doug Suttles and reported that engineers cleaned it up within three hours; the report associated the ad corruption with OpenX. |
| February 2013 | Injected JavaScript and a Java-based exploit associated with g01pack, according to Invincea as reported by SecurityWeek. | SecurityWeek said the incident had been cleaned up by publication. Invincea’s report did not confirm OpenX involvement. |
What the incidents say—and do not say—about malvertising
Both reports connected malicious activity to advertising, but they describe different events and mechanisms. The 2011 story concerned fake antivirus promotions launched through corrupted ads; the 2013 story concerned a Java-based exploit temporarily hosted on the site. Treating the earlier OpenX detail as proof of the later attack’s cause would go beyond the reporting.
SecurityWeek also relayed historical figures from Cisco Systems’ 2013 Annual Security Report: online shopping sites were reported as 21 times as likely, and search engines 27 times as likely, to serve malicious content as counterfeit software sites; online advertisements were reported as 182 times as likely to deliver malicious content as pornography sites. These are Cisco’s figures as relayed by SecurityWeek, not current risk estimates.

In its 2011 coverage, ABC News cited RiskIQ figures showing a peak of 14,694 malvertisement occurrences in May 2011, compared with 1,533 in May 2010. That broader historical count is not a measure of SpeedTest.net users’ exposure.

- The exact Java version or vulnerability involved in the 2013 report.
- The malware sample, indicators of compromise, attacker identity, and full technical chain.
- Whether OpenX was involved in the 2013 compromise.
SecurityWeek’s account is a contemporaneous report of Invincea’s findings, not a complete forensic record. It establishes that the site was reported compromised and that remediation had occurred by publication, but it cannot establish the site’s present-day security.
