Check Point says attackers began exploiting the VPN authentication-bypass vulnerability CVE-2026-50751 on May 7, 2026—not in April, as the original headline claim suggests. The flaw affects Remote Access VPN and Mobile Access configurations using deprecated IKEv1. Check Point urged customers using IKEv1 to install the applicable security updates and review logs and configurations dating back to May 7.
What happened in the Check Point VPN attacks?
CVE-2026-50751 is a certificate-validation logic flaw. In an affected IKEv1 configuration, an attacker can establish a VPN session without a valid user password. Check Point rates the vulnerability CVSS 9.3.
This is an authentication bypass, not proof that every affected gateway was fully compromised. Check Point says further post-authentication activity is needed to access internal resources or escalate privileges.
Check Point said it opened its investigation on June 4, 2026, after detecting suspicious activity, and published its advisory on June 8. The vendor reported attempts increasing in early June. Its earliest observed exploitation date was May 7; the public advisory does not substantiate the claim that exploitation began in April.

Who was targeted, and what did attackers do?
Check Point reported exploitation against a few dozen targeted organizations globally. That is the vendor’s observed scope, not a complete estimate of all victims. It reported one case of confirmed post-compromise activity associated with a Qilin ransomware affiliate.
Check Point assessed with medium confidence that the actor was financially motivated and used Qilin ransomware. The vendor also noted indicators that the actor might use Tox communications and infrastructure hosted by several VPS providers. Those are Check Point’s assessments, not independently established attribution.

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security also confirmed active exploitation in an advisory dated June 8, 2026, and reported that CISA added CVE-2026-50751 to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog that day.
Does CVE-2026-50751 affect your gateway?
Exposure depends on the product, software release, and VPN configuration; it is not enough to see “Check Point” or “VPN” in an inventory. Check Point lists Mobile Access/SSL VPN, Remote Access VPN, and Spark Firewall among the product families, with affected-version information covering R80.20.X, R80.40, R81, R81.10, R81.10.X, R81.20, R82, R82.00.X, and R82.10. Some release branches are marked end of support.

Use Check Point support article sk185033 to verify whether the precise release and configuration in your deployment are affected and to identify the applicable fix. The release list alone does not establish that a particular gateway is vulnerable: the issue concerns configurations using deprecated IKEv1, and exact applicability is deployment-specific.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should administrators do?
- Check applicability. Compare each gateway’s product, release/build, support status, and IKE configuration with Check Point support article sk185033. Do not assume every gateway is exposed or that one update applies to every release.
- Apply the vendor’s applicable security update. Check Point urged customers using IKEv1 to install available updates. Its support article contains the exact hotfix and upgrade guidance, along with alternative mitigations through remote-access settings. Follow the instructions for your deployment rather than applying a hotfix based on the CVE name alone.
- Review evidence from May 7 onward. Audit forensic logs and configurations beginning with Check Point’s earliest observed exploitation date. Investigate anomalous VPN access and any subsequent activity that could indicate access to internal resources or privilege escalation.
- Handle suspected compromise as incident response, not just patching. Preserve relevant logs and investigate suspicious sessions and post-authentication activity. Installing an update addresses vulnerability exposure; it does not by itself determine whether an attacker already established a session.
How is this different from the other Check Point vulnerabilities?
Check Point also identified CVE-2026-50752, a certificate-validation condition in deprecated IKEv1 that may allow man-in-the-middle interference with site-to-site VPN communications under specific conditions. The vendor rated it CVSS 7.4 and said it had not observed exploitation in the wild. It is related technical context, not the authentication bypass used in the reported attacks.
In September 2026, Check Point disclosed separate vulnerabilities: CVE-2026-85102, a pre-authentication remote-code-execution flaw in Security Gateway VPN certificate handling, and CVE-2026-93616, a pre-authentication path traversal in the Check Point Management web service. The vendor reported exploitation attempts against Spark customers involving CVE-2026-85102 and a handful of pinpointed attacks involving CVE-2026-93616. These are not CVE-2026-50751; administrators should use the relevant September advisory for their investigation and remediation. For CVE-2026-85102, Check Point advises reviewing anomalous certificate-based Mobile Access logins and checking suspicious sessions for second-stage activity such as internal port and service scans. The certificate subjects it observed are not exhaustive.
