PCWorld measured an average of 92 FPS for its Alienware 16 in a Metro Exodus benchmark, topping that review’s comparison group. Meanwhile, Notebookcheck’s RTX 5090 Alienware 18 lasted under two hours in a deliberately low-power browsing test. Here’s what the reviews establish, and what to check before choosing a configuration.
What the reviews show about gaming performance
Alienware 16: a strong result in one Metro Exodus test
PCWorld reports that its Alienware 16 averaged 92 FPS in its Metro Exodus benchmark and topped the competitors included in that review. Treat this as a result for PCWorld’s tested review unit and that benchmark—not a guaranteed frame rate across games or a claim that the laptop beats every rival. The review describes a high-end configuration, but the result should not be transferred to lower-GPU versions. PCWorld’s Alienware 16 review is the source for the measurement.
Alienware 16 RTX 5080: performance depends on mode and GPU
Notebookcheck found that its Alienware 16 RTX 5080 performed within a few percentage points of the average for laptops with the same GPU in its database when run in Performance mode. Its further figures are estimates rather than hands-on results for each configuration: it estimates Turbo mode could improve graphics performance by about 8%, an RTX 5090 version could be up to 10% faster than its test unit, and an RTX 5070 Ti version could be 15–25% slower. These estimates are useful for orientation, not substitutes for matched tests. Notebookcheck’s Alienware 16 review explains its test and estimates.
Alienware 18: RTX 5090 is the reference point
Notebookcheck’s Alienware 18 review tested an RTX 5090 configuration. The reviewer estimates that RTX 5080 and RTX 5070 Ti versions would deliver about 10–15% and 30–45% less graphics performance, respectively, relative to that test system. These are configuration estimates, not benchmark results from direct testing of every GPU option. Notebookcheck’s Alienware 18 review provides the context.

How many FPS can you expect?
There is no single FPS figure for either laptop. Results change with the exact GPU and CPU, the game, resolution, graphics settings, power mode, and benchmark method. The 92 FPS Metro Exodus result is a useful example of what one reviewed Alienware 16 achieved, not a forecast for another game or SKU.
For a meaningful comparison, look for results from the same game and version at the same resolution and graphics settings, and note each system’s performance mode and hardware. A comparison between different review units or different test methods cannot establish a clean winner. Neither the cited results nor the configuration estimates prove that an Area-51 model beats every competitor across all games, modes, and prices.

What configurations Dell lists
Dell identifies the 16-inch model as AA16250 and the 18-inch model as AA18250. Both product pages show configurable systems, so the specifications currently displayed on the US pages are examples of listed configurations, not the only versions. Options and availability can change; confirm the selected model, components, and regional listing before ordering.

Review hardware can differ substantially from a currently displayed retail configuration. PC Gamer identifies its Alienware 18 review unit as AA18250 with an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX, RTX 5090 at 175W, 64GB DDR5-6400, 2TB PCIe 5.0 storage, and an 18-inch 2560×1600 300Hz display. Those are the review unit’s specifications, not a promise that Dell currently sells that exact configuration. PC Gamer’s Alienware 18 review identifies its tested hardware.

Choosing between the 16-inch and 18-inch models
The most practical distinction is screen size. The 18-inch model suits buyers who want a larger, high-refresh display and expect to use the laptop mainly as a desktop replacement. The 16-inch model trades screen area for a smaller chassis. That is a buying preference based on the listed sizes, not evidence that one has higher benchmark performance.
Compare the exact configurations you can actually buy rather than choosing by model name alone. Check:

- GPU and CPU: confirm the installed parts on the selected SKU; review scores from an RTX 5090 system do not describe an RTX 5070 version.
- Game results: use native-resolution results where available, and match the game, graphics settings, and power mode.
- Display: verify resolution, panel type, refresh rate, and listed features on the regional product page.
- Long sessions: look for sustained-load results and note which performance mode produced them.
- Mobility: consider battery runtime as well as the larger model’s screen and chassis footprint.
- Price: compare the actual price of the configurations under consideration; a result from a more expensive GPU tier does not establish value for a lower tier.
Battery life is a major trade-off for the tested Alienware 18
Notebookcheck measured under two hours of real-world browsing on its RTX 5090 Alienware 18 review unit, even with iGPU mode, a 60Hz refresh rate, and the Battery power profile. This is a result from that review unit and setup, not a measured runtime for every Alienware 18 configuration—and it should not be applied to the Alienware 16. It does show that buyers who need long unplugged work sessions should weigh the 18’s desktop-replacement strengths against the test’s short runtime.
