ZeroShape reconstructs a complete 3D object from a single RGB image by predicting its visible surface in 3D and using that geometry to infer the hidden parts. Its “zero-shot” label describes generalization to test data outside its training distribution—not a model that works without training.
What ZeroShape does
ZeroShape is a method for single-image 3D shape reconstruction. Given an object-centric RGB image, it estimates a full shape, including geometry that the camera cannot see. The authors describe the task as ill-posed: many different 3D objects can produce similar 2D views, so completing unseen regions necessarily depends on learned priors about object geometry.
The method was introduced by Zixuan Huang, Stefan Stojanov, Anh Thai, Varun Jampani, and James M. Rehg in ZeroShape: Regression-based Zero-shot Shape Reconstruction. The paper appeared at CVPR 2024; the version discussed here is arXiv version 2, revised January 16, 2024.
How the reconstruction works
Rather than iteratively sampling candidate objects, ZeroShape uses a learned regression model to predict an implicit occupancy field. For a queried 3D coordinate, the model estimates whether that point belongs to the object’s shape representation. The resulting field can be converted into a surface.

1. Estimate depth and camera intrinsics
The first stage predicts a depth map and the camera intrinsics from the input image. Intrinsics describe how the camera projects the scene; errors in these estimates can distort the apparent proportions of the reconstructed surface.
2. Unproject the visible surface into 3D
A differentiable geometric unprojection unit combines the predicted depth and camera information to form a normalized 3D projection map of the visible surface. This intermediate representation gives the model explicit geometric cues about the part of the object that can be seen.
3. Complete the shape with occupancy predictions
A projection-guided shape reconstructor uses local features and cross-attention to estimate occupancy at queried 3D coordinates. It uses the visible 3D surface as a guide to predict the complete shape, including occluded geometry.

The design reflects the authors’ central idea: a reconstructed visible surface can provide more useful cues for completing hidden regions than image features or depth alone. The model is trained in two stages: depth and camera estimation are pretrained first, then the full system is trained with 3D occupancy supervision.

ZeroShape is not training-free. The authors train it on synthetic renders of 3D assets, then evaluate its ability to generalize to test images from separate real-world 3D datasets. In this context, “zero-shot” refers to evaluation beyond the training distribution; it does not mean the model has never learned from data or that it can reconstruct every unfamiliar object reliably.
Training data and evaluation setup
Training
The authors report using about 52,000 meshes from ShapeNetCore.v2 and 42,000 filtered meshes from Objaverse-LVIS, spanning more than 1,000 categories. Blender was used to render slightly fewer than 1.1 million synthetic training images, with depth and camera annotations.

Test benchmark
The evaluation benchmark combines OmniObject3D, Ocrtoc3D, and Pix3D. It includes real images paired with 3D meshes as well as photorealistic renders of scanned objects. The paper reports using a filtered set of 749 Ocrtoc3D image-object pairs and 1,181 Pix3D images; dataset cleaning and rendering choices are described in the paper.
Metrics
The paper reports Chamfer Distance and F-score. For evaluation, it extracts implicit surfaces with Marching Cubes and samples 10,000 points from surfaces to compute the metrics. These measurements depend on the paper’s dataset processing and evaluation protocol, so scores are most useful when compared under that same setup.

The paper also compares ZeroShape with SS3D, MCC, Point-E, Shap-E, One-2-3-45, and OpenLRM on its selected benchmark, and reports favorable comparisons. That supports the method as a competitive regression-based approach within the authors’ tested set; it does not establish that ZeroShape is the best method across later models, other datasets, or different evaluation protocols.

The main distinction is how the model obtains a shape. ZeroShape predicts the representation directly with a feed-forward regression model; it does not generate a sequence of candidate shapes through iterative sampling. The authors state, “We do not perform any per-instance optimization at test time.” That means the method does not separately optimize a representation for each input image at inference.
Those design choices are useful comparison axes, but they do not settle which approach is preferable in every application. A fair comparison should use the same dataset and accuracy metric, account for inference-time computation and any iterative optimization, and consider the amount and source of training data as well as generalization across categories and image conditions.

Training cost and practical scope
For their training runs, the authors report using four NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti GPUs, with approximately two days for pretraining and three days for joint training. These are historical details about the paper’s experiment, not a minimum hardware requirement for inference. The paper and project page do not establish a current minimum inference configuration.
Because a single view cannot uniquely determine hidden geometry, a predicted backside or occluded region is an informed completion rather than a direct observation. This matters when the result will be used for measurement, manufacturing, or another task that depends on exact unseen geometry.

The ZeroShape project page points readers to the paper, code, and demo. The paper’s reported benchmark and comparisons are specific to its 2024 experiments; they should not be treated as an independent replication or a comparison against methods published later.
