Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor advanced data science, choose a source by the data it actually publishes—not by the name of its portal. Start with a domain-specific primary source when one exists, then verify the dataset’s provenance, vintage, geography, schema, update pattern, license, and access limits. The 16 sources below are practical starting points, not a ranked “best” list: some are authoritative data providers, while others are catalogs or benchmark communities that help you find candidates.
How to choose a source before downloading data
Use the same checks for every candidate. A portal record can help you discover a dataset, but the organization that publishes or maintains the dataset is the authority for its definitions, release history, and terms of use.
- Fit: Does the dataset measure the population, place, process, or phenomenon in your research question?
- Provenance: Who collected or transformed it, using what method? Is the original publisher identifiable?
- Coverage and resolution: Check dates, geography, units, spatial or temporal granularity, and the relevant data vintage.
- Quality: Inspect missingness, known measurement bias, definitions, and limitations before modeling.
- Access: Confirm download or API options, schema stability, authentication, quotas, and bulk-access routes.
- Reuse: Read the dataset-specific license and privacy terms; public availability does not automatically permit unrestricted reuse.
- Reproducibility and cost: Record the version, citation guidance, transformations, and any storage, compute, or transfer costs. For consequential findings, cross-check an independent source where the definitions are comparable.
Keep a compact provenance record with the dataset name, publisher, release or snapshot, geography, units, access date, license, and transformations. This is especially important when a catalog links to a third-party host or when an API’s results depend on query parameters.
Government statistics and public-sector APIs
1. U.S. Census Data API
A strong starting point for U.S. population, demographic, and economic statistics. The Census Bureau’s API guide describes data families including the American Community Survey, Decennial Census, Economic Census, economic indicators, population estimates and projections, and international trade. Queries depend on the geography and data vintage supported by the specific dataset; check both before comparing places or years. TIGERweb boundary data and Census geocoding services can complement tabular data. The Census Bureau describes its API as a way to query data directly from its servers; consult the guide for dataset-specific query details.

2. Data.gov
Use Data.gov to discover federal datasets, tools, and resources, then follow each listing to the agency that owns the data. The agency’s documentation—not the catalog entry alone—should guide interpretation, release tracking, and reuse. The U.S. General Services Administration page reported 604,872 datasets and a last-updated time of 2026-10-03 05:00:30 GMT when accessed; that is a point-in-time catalog count, not a measure of quality or a durable total.
3. api.data.gov
api.data.gov is a shared API management gateway used by federal agencies. Its documentation reports use by 25 agencies for more than 450 APIs. It is a useful way to locate API access and documentation, but authentication and rate limits are specific to each API; read the owning agency’s instructions before building a client or scheduling collection.
Science, Earth observation, and environmental data
4. NASA Open Science Data Repository (OSDR)
OSDR is a science-oriented route to study datasets and associated file and study metadata. Its REST APIs support searching and retrieving files and metadata, and search spans OSDR and named external omics repositories. Review accession-level metadata and any domain-specific research constraints rather than treating a search result as a complete description of a study.

11. AWS Registry of Open Data
The AWS Registry of Open Data is a discovery option for large public datasets hosted in cloud-accessible form. AWS says its Open Data program includes more than 300 free, publicly available datasets, but cautions that registry datasets are generally maintained by third parties under varied licenses. For a candidate, check its bucket documentation, owner, region, license, and the implications of compute, storage, and data transfer. AWS lists EC2, Athena, Lambda, and EMR as services for analyzing open data; cloud hosting may reduce the need to move large files, but it does not make processing cost-free.
12. OpenStreetMap
OpenStreetMap (OSM) provides mapped features such as roads and buildings. A World Bank remote-sensing guide names it as a resource, but a project still needs to check the current OSM license and attribution obligations, regional completeness, extraction method, and temporal snapshot for the specific data used. Mapped coverage and detail can differ between regions, so assess fitness for the study area rather than assuming uniform completeness.

14. UCI Machine Learning Repository
The UCI Machine Learning Repository is a recognized collection of machine-learning datasets and is surfaced in OpenML’s dataset ecosystem documentation. It can be useful for established baselines, teaching, or reproducing prior work. Check the current page for each dataset’s license, citation, schema, and limitations rather than assuming repository-wide terms or uniform quality.
15. Google Dataset Search
Google Dataset Search is a cross-publisher discovery tool, not the authoritative record for the data. Follow a result to the publishing repository, inspect its metadata and license there, and cite that repository. The National Academies’ resource-sharing page lists it as a discovery resource.
16. Kaggle Datasets
Kaggle Datasets includes community- and publisher-hosted data that can be useful for exploration and prototyping. For research or consequential analysis, trace the original source, check the license and collection method, identify transformations, and note the update date. Cite the original publisher where possible; a Kaggle upload alone may not establish the provenance or permitted use of the underlying data.
Quick Recap
A practical workflow for building a defensible dataset
- Translate the question into data requirements. Specify the target population or phenomenon, geographic scope, time period, units, and resolution. This prevents a convenient but mismatched dataset from driving the analysis.
- Search broadly, then identify the publisher. Use portals such as Data.gov, Google Dataset Search, or a domain collection to find candidates. Follow catalog records to the agency, repository, or dataset owner.
- Read the dataset-level documentation. Confirm definitions, collection and transformation methods, geography, vintage, update cadence, schema, missingness, and known limitations. For API data, test the exact query and response fields you will rely on.
- Check access and terms before scaling up. Confirm authentication, quotas, bulk download options, license, attribution, privacy constraints, and any third-party conditions. For cloud-hosted files, estimate compute, storage, and transfer needs as well.
- Preserve provenance and validate the extract. Save the release or snapshot and query details, document transformations, and test row counts, key uniqueness, missingness, units, and geographic or temporal coverage. When definitions allow, compare important results with an independent source.
- Choose compute to match the data. Start locally if the data and workload permit. If a dataset is cloud-hosted or too large for practical local processing, compare the cost and operational trade-offs of processing near the data with downloading it; confirm current service terms.
