Gartner’s 2025 Magic Quadrant for Observability Platforms put AI capabilities, cost optimization and DevOps integration among the differentiators in a crowded market. Network World’s 6 August 2025 analysis named eight leaders, but that dated shortlist is not a universal buying recommendation—and it should not be read as a current 2026 ranking.
What Gartner’s 2025 observability analysis says
Observability platforms collect and analyze telemetry—such as logs, metrics, events and traces—to help teams understand system performance, reliability and security. In its 2025 account, Network World described a market where vendors were expanding analytics and AI features while competing on cost management and connections to DevOps workflows.
Gartner’s public abstract for the 2025 Magic Quadrant is dated 7 July 2025. Network World published its analysis on 6 August 2025. The article says Gartner assessed 20 vendors, the Magic Quadrant’s ceiling, from a field of more than 40 vendors; the broader-field figure is Network World’s description, not a count established by the public Gartner abstract. Network World also reports a Gartner projection of a $14.2 billion market by 2028. That is a forecast, not a realized market size.
Gartner’s report, as quoted by Denise Dubie in Network World, described the ceiling as forcing difficult inclusion decisions: “there was no choice but to leave viable participants out.” Its observation that the market may eventually move beyond advanced use cases into a “fashion show” captures a practical warning: a longer feature list does not automatically mean a better fit.

These positions can help create a shortlist, but a Magic Quadrant position is not a substitute for comparing specific requirements. Gartner’s public abstracts do not provide full placement data, detailed vendor scores or all the report’s strengths and cautions. Gartner describes Magic Quadrants as positioning providers by Ability to Execute and Completeness of Vision; its Critical Capabilities work addresses detailed product requirements.
How to choose an observability platform
Start with the systems and teams you need to support, then evaluate platforms against the work they must do. Comparing vendors before defining that workload can make broad rankings obscure meaningful differences.

- Specify the use case. Identify whether the primary users are SRE, IT operations, software engineering or AI engineering teams, and define the services and reliability or security problems they need to investigate.
- Trace the telemetry lifecycle. Check which logs, metrics, events and traces the platform can ingest, how it correlates and explores them, and how long data can be retained. Include the controls available to manage volume and storage.
- Test the analysis and response workflow. Determine whether AI/ML capabilities improve investigation, alert quality or remediation in the workflows your team actually uses. For AI applications, assess whether AI/LLM observability meets the workload’s needs.
- Map integrations and standards. Review OpenTelemetry support and connections to the tools used for IT service management, incident response, automation and DevOps. Open standards can support extensibility and reduce lock-in risk, but they do not make every product or integration interchangeable.
- Model total operational cost. Forecast telemetry ingestion, storage and retention under realistic workloads. Account for implementation, integration, training and staff expertise alongside license or consumption charges.
- Validate operational fit. Assess deployment options, learning curve, security requirements and the expertise needed to administer the platform. A feature that teams cannot configure or use effectively is not a practical advantage.
How to control observability costs without losing visibility
Cost optimization is about making deliberate decisions over telemetry volume, retention and use—not simply discarding data. The 2025 article’s vendor summaries point to different approaches and cautions, but buyers should validate current product capabilities and pricing directly for their own workloads.
- Estimate data volume and retention needs before comparing consumption or licensing models.
- Ask how the platform lets administrators control ingestion, storage and retention, and how those changes affect investigation needs.
- Include training, integration work and operational staffing in cost estimates, not just the headline price.
- Check whether usage can be forecast from your expected workloads and whether the pricing model makes that forecast actionable.
- Review cost and visibility trade-offs with the teams responsible for incident response, reliability and security before reducing telemetry.
What AI and DevOps capabilities matter
“AI” is not one capability. For an observability buyer, the useful question is whether the platform helps teams interpret telemetry and take appropriate action. Assess AI/ML analysis, root-cause support, alert quality and remediation in the context of actual operating workflows. Organizations building AI systems should also examine AI/LLM observability rather than assume general-purpose monitoring covers their needs.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
DevOps integration is similarly broader than a connector list. It concerns whether telemetry and findings can fit into the processes and tools used by software teams, operations, service management, incident response and automation. OpenTelemetry can help with extensibility, but integration depth and operational fit still need to be evaluated product by product.

Gartner published a public Critical Capabilities abstract on 13 July 2026. It indicates that the use-case taxonomy continues to evolve, listing AI/LLM observability, agentic AI, observability cost control, telemetry management and DevOps Engineering. It does not provide the full vendor scores or underlying report, so it cannot establish current vendor placements or rankings.

For buyers, the important implication is to define the workload first: monitoring a conventional service, controlling telemetry costs and observing an AI system are distinct evaluation needs. The 2025 Leaders are a dated starting point, not evidence that one platform is best for every 2026 use case. Gartner’s 2026 public abstract provides the newer capabilities framing.
