To find out whether a Proxmox VM change helped, measure the workload and resource it was meant to affect before and after the change under comparable conditions. Record the host, guest, storage, virtual devices, test settings, and background load; run the same test more than once where practical; and compare the metric that matters to the application—not a single general host score.
Choose a test that matches the change
Start by writing down the change and the result you expect it to influence. A CPU adjustment calls for a representative CPU workload; a virtual disk or storage change calls for repeatable I/O testing; a NIC or bridge change calls for a network test between suitable endpoints. Choose a workload that resembles the VM’s real use, and decide in advance which metric matters: throughput, latency, or another workload-specific measure.
Proxmox describes pveperf as “just a very quick and general benchmark.” It gives a quick view of CPU and hard-disk performance on an installed Proxmox VE system, but the administration guide recommends more detailed tests, especially for I/O. Use it as host context, not as a substitute for measuring the guest workload and component you changed. Proxmox VE Administration Guide: Simple Performance Overview.
Record the baseline before changing anything
Save the VM configuration and relevant environment details before the change. This makes it possible to tell what differed between runs and gives readers enough context to interpret the result. Proxmox’s configuration source documents VM configuration management; the reporting checklist below is a reproducibility practice, not an official Proxmox benchmark standard. Proxmox VM configuration documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Software and hardware: Proxmox VE version, host CPU, and guest operating system and version.
- VM resources: allocated CPU model and count, assigned memory, and any relevant memory ballooning behavior.
- Storage path: storage backend or target, virtual disk bus/controller, guest driver, and caching or other relevant disk options.
- Network path: virtual NIC model and guest driver, bridge, and physical path involved in the test.
- Test conditions: workload, tool and settings, data size, duration, concurrency, guest state, and any concurrent host or guest load.
Keep the workload and settings, guest resources, and relevant virtual device and storage target the same between baseline and follow-up—unless one of those settings is the variable being tested. Note anything that could add noise, such as backups, another busy VM, or unrelated guest activity.
Run a repeatable before-and-after comparison
- Define the hypothesis. State the one change and the metric expected to respond. For example, a disk-controller change should be evaluated with an I/O workload, not inferred from a CPU-only score.
- Run and save the baseline. Use the chosen workload with fixed settings and capture the configuration and results. Repeat the run several times if practical, noting the spread between results rather than relying only on the best run.
- Change one variable where possible. Isolating a change makes attribution easier. If a change necessarily involves linked settings, record all of them and treat the outcome as the result of that combined change.
- Rerun under matching conditions. Keep the test, data size, duration, concurrency, and guest state consistent. Change only the intended setting and any changes required for it to work.
- Compare the relevant metric and report context. Compare like with like—latency against latency, or throughput against throughput—and include the setup details and run-to-run variability.
Match the benchmark to the resource
CPU
Use a repeatable workload representative of the VM’s CPU-bound work. Record the VM’s CPU model and allocation alongside the host CPU and guest context. A score from a different workload, host, or allocation is not a clean before-and-after comparison; the available Proxmox material does not establish one universally best CPU model or an expected score for every workload.

Storage and virtual disks
Test the guest’s relevant I/O path and report the storage backend, virtual disk bus/controller, guest driver, and settings that affect I/O. Proxmox’s migration guidance recommends SCSI with VirtIO SCSI single for disks when supported by the guest, and identifies discard where useful for thin provisioning and IO thread for delegating disk I/O. These are options to evaluate against the target workload, not guarantees of a particular gain. Proxmox migration guidance: VirtIO drivers.
Do not treat a general host disk figure as a complete characterization of guest storage performance. A guest workload exercises a path involving the virtual device, driver, storage backend, and current load; identify the part a given test actually measures.

Networking
Measure traffic between appropriate endpoints and record the virtual NIC model and driver, bridge, and physical network path. Proxmox’s migration guidance favors VirtIO networking where the guest supports it, but the useful result is the throughput or latency of the path and workload you care about—not a result from a different topology or test.
Memory
Record assigned memory and relevant ballooning behavior so a comparison has context. The cited Proxmox material does not establish a universal memory benchmark prescription, so select a test that reflects the VM’s actual memory-sensitive workload rather than treating one generic number as decisive.

Interpret results without overclaiming
A measured change is meaningful only in relation to the conditions and workload that produced it. Report the test setup and repeated-run variation, and avoid comparing results from different workloads as though they were equivalent. There is no generally applicable expected improvement established here for modern Proxmox workloads.
- If a synthetic test improves but the application does not, check whether the test reflects the application’s bottleneck and whether background load or another resource is limiting it.
- If results vary between runs, report that variability and investigate concurrent host or guest activity before attributing the difference to the VM setting.
- If a recommended device or setting is unsupported by the guest or changes compatibility or operations, include that trade-off in the decision rather than judging only the benchmark result.
Older Proxmox VE 6.4 documentation includes test-specific historical comparisons of VirtIO and emulated devices. Those figures are tied to that older guide and its tests, not a promised or current performance gain. Proxmox VE 6.4 Administration Guide.
