If an Excel pie chart is missing slices, check its chart filters and source-data range first. Hidden worksheet rows or columns are also omitted from charts by default. If the slices appear but labels do not, add Data Labels and choose what they display. The steps below apply to Excel versions covered by Microsoft Support, including Excel 2016 through Microsoft 365 and Excel 2024; exact controls can vary by platform and release.
If slices are missing, check which data the chart includes
Clear any chart filters
Select the chart and inspect its chart filters. Make sure the categories or data points you expect to see have not been turned off. Excel provides chart filters to show or hide individual chart data.
Verify the source range
Select the chart, then go to Chart Design > Select Data. Check that the chart’s source range includes both the intended category labels and their values. If the range stops short of some rows or columns, expand it to include them. Menu wording can differ across versions and platforms. See Microsoft’s guidance on changing chart data.
Check for hidden worksheet rows or columns
Excel does not display data in hidden worksheet rows or columns in a chart by default. To include it, select the chart and open Chart Design > Select Data > Hidden and Empty Cells, then enable the option to show data in hidden rows and columns. The exact dialog labels may vary. Microsoft’s hidden worksheet data instructions describe this setting.

Check whether the data suits a pie chart
A pie chart is intended to show how parts contribute to one whole. Microsoft’s recommendations for pie-chart data are:
- Use one data series.
- Avoid negative values and data with many zeros.
- Keep the chart to no more than seven categories for readability.
If your data has multiple series, negative values, or too many categories to distinguish, a pie chart may not communicate it well. Consider a bar, column, or line chart instead. If only smaller values need emphasis, Microsoft also describes pie-of-pie and bar-of-pie chart formats. See Microsoft’s pie chart guidance.

If labels are missing, add and configure Data Labels
Add labels to the chart
Select the chart, then choose Chart Elements > Data Labels or Chart Design > Add Chart Element > Data Labels. The control available depends on your Excel version and platform.
Choose the label position and content
Choose a position that keeps labels readable. Pie charts can place labels outside the slices, including callout-style placements. To reposition one label, select and drag it, or choose a different placement. In the label formatting options, select the information you want displayed, such as the category name, value, or percentage. If a label was customized and no longer shows the expected information, restore the built-in label text options. Microsoft’s Data Labels instructions cover adding and formatting them.
