Choose the Action button for one action you use often and want to trigger with a press and hold. Choose Control Center when you want a visible collection of controls to pick from. Neither is proven universally faster; the right shortcut depends on what you need to do and which gesture works best for you.
How the two quick-access options differ
| What matters | Action button | Control Center |
|---|---|---|
| How to open | Press and hold the physical button. | Swipe down from the top-right on Face ID iPhones, or swipe up from the bottom on iPhones with a Home button. |
| What is immediately available | One assigned action, which can include a selected control or a Shortcut. | A customizable collection of controls; some offer further options when you touch and hold them. |
| Best suited to | A frequent, consistent action such as opening Camera or running a Shortcut. | Choosing among several controls or settings you want to see together. |
| Model availability | Only iPhones with an Action button. | Apple documents access on both Face ID and Home button iPhones. |
When the Action button is the better choice
Use the Action button when you have one task you want to trigger directly without first opening a collection of controls. Apple describes it as useful for actions you perform often because it is accessible. Available assignments include Silent Mode, Focus, Camera, Flashlight, Voice Memo, Recognize Music, Translate, Magnifier, Controls, Shortcut, and Accessibility. Controls, Shortcut, and Accessibility require you to choose a specific option.
The trade-off is that the button has one assignment at a time. It is a direct route to that chosen action, not a menu of all your preferred settings.
When Control Center is better
Control Center is the better fit when you want to see and choose among multiple controls. Common examples include Airplane Mode, Do Not Disturb, flashlight, volume, and screen brightness. You can add, remove, rearrange, resize, and group controls, and some controls reveal more options when touched and held.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
If Control Center opens accidentally while you use apps, go to Settings > Control Center and turn off Access Within Apps. That prevents opening it from inside apps; it does not change the Action button assignment.
Check whether your iPhone has an Action button
The Action button replaces the Ring/Silent switch on supported models, but it is not available on every iPhone. Apple’s current support documentation identifies iPhone 17e, iPhone 16e, and iPhone 15 Pro models, and describes Action buttons on iPhone 16 and later models with Camera Control. Check the exact model and local lineup rather than assuming that every iPhone in a generation has the button. For Apple’s current model-specific information, see iPhone models that support the Action button.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Set up the Action button
- Open Settings > Action Button.
- Swipe through the available actions and select the one you want.
- If you choose Controls, Shortcut, or Accessibility, select the specific control, shortcut, or accessibility option requested.
- Press and hold the Action button to run its assigned action.
To assign a Shortcut, select Shortcut in Action Button settings, tap Choose a Shortcut, and select the shortcut you want to run. See Apple’s Action button setup instructions.
Customize Control Center
Open Control Center, enter editing, then add, remove, rearrange, resize, or group controls to suit your needs. The exact access gesture depends on your iPhone: swipe down from the top-right on a Face ID model, or swipe up from the bottom on a Home button model. Apple explains the available controls and customization in its Control Center guide.

Which is faster—or easier to use?
Apple’s feature instructions do not publish a measured speed comparison between these methods. A press and hold may be the more direct route when you want the one action assigned to the button. Control Center offers a swipe-and-select route when you need to choose among controls. Which feels quicker depends on the task, your preferred gesture, and how you have configured the controls.
Accessibility is similarly personal: Apple documents accessibility options for both methods, but its guidance does not establish a universal accessibility or speed winner. Choose the route that is comfortable and dependable for you.

Yes. Choose Controls as the Action button assignment, then select the specific control you want. This gives you a button shortcut to that chosen control, rather than opening Control Center as a whole.
