Android normally requires the phone to be unlocked and set to File transfer on the phone itself. If a broken screen prevents those steps, the USB connection alone will not make the storage accessible.
What “not recognized” can mean
First distinguish between a phone that does not appear to connect at all and one that connects or charges but shows no files. Android’s normal USB transfer process requires interaction with the phone: Google’s instructions are to unlock the device, tap the USB notification, and select “File transfer”. If the display or touch does not work, you may be unable to complete that selection even when the cable is connected.
Those steps do not diagnose every possible cable, port, driver, computer operating-system, or hardware problem. But when the phone has a broken screen, inability to unlock it or choose the transfer mode is a key reason files may remain unavailable.
Check for another copy of the files first
Before trying to control the damaged phone, check the Google Account used on it for files already stored in Google Photos or Drive, and check any other cloud account or computer backup you previously used. Google documents account-based access to services such as Google Photos and Drive as alternatives to direct USB transfer. This only helps if the relevant files were actually synced or backed up; signing in does not recover files that existed only on the phone.

Choose a route based on what still works

For some Galaxy phones, use an external display
Samsung Australia documents a Smart Switch method for a subset of Galaxy devices. It requires a Galaxy phone running Android 12 or later and supporting DisplayPort. Samsung’s instructions call for a USB-C-to-HDMI hub or adapter, an external display, a mouse, and a keyboard. Once the phone’s screen is mirrored and you unlock it using the input devices, launch Smart Switch to transfer data. See Samsung Australia’s broken-screen transfer instructions.
Confirm the exact model supports DisplayPort before buying a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI hub; having a USB-C port is not enough. You may also need an HDMI cable and a display. Samsung says those items and the wired mouse and keyboard are not included with the phone. Its instructions are Australia-specific, and Samsung warns that models, settings, sequences, and error messages may differ by market.

Why ADB usually is not a new workaround
Android Debug Bridge (ADB) is not a general bypass for a locked phone with an unusable screen. On Android 4.2.2/API 17 and later, Android requires the user to approve an RSA authorization prompt before a computer can run ADB commands. The phone must be unlocked and the prompt acknowledged, according to Android Developers’ ADB documentation.
ADB may be relevant if USB debugging was already configured and that specific computer was authorized before the screen broke. It is not a dependable way to newly enable debugging or approve a computer when you cannot use the phone. Even an authorized computer is not guaranteed to recover files from every damaged device.

When to stop troubleshooting
If there is no accessible backup and you cannot unlock and operate the phone using a supported input or display setup, contact the manufacturer or a repair provider about the exact model before attempting invasive steps. A qualified data-recovery provider may be appropriate when the files matter and ordinary repair is not enough. Be explicit that preserving data is the priority.

- Do not factory-reset the phone as a file-recovery step; a reset can erase the data you want.
- Do not unlock the bootloader or flash software in an attempt to retrieve files; these are not established recovery routes and can put data at risk.
- Avoid blind tapping or navigation on a black screen: you cannot reliably confirm what action the phone is taking.
