The agent runs on a host computer or cloud development environment; your phone is only a way to send prompts, handle approvals, and check status. Keep the host powered, connected, and available—or use a cloud workspace with limits that fit the task.
What keeps the agent running when the phone disconnects?
The execution host does. If an agent is running on your computer, that computer must remain awake and online. If it is running in a cloud workspace, the workspace must remain active under that service’s lifecycle rules. Losing the phone’s connection cuts off your remote control, but it does not by itself stop work running on an available host.
GitHub says a remotely controlled Copilot CLI session continues on the local machine where it began. VS Code likewise runs remote agent sessions on the selected host. A remote-control app provides access; it does not provide compute or prevent the host from sleeping.
Choose where the agent should execute

These are different kinds of limits: the 30-minute setting is an inactivity timeout, while 12 hours is the documented maximum lifetime. They are service limits in GitHub documentation accessed in 2026, not guarantees that every task will run for those periods; settings and organization policies can affect availability.

Set up a session that can survive losing phone access
- Choose the host. Use a local computer only if you can keep it powered, awake, and connected. If the task must continue when your personal computer is off, start it on a suitable remote host or cloud development environment instead.
- Start the agent on that host. Use the provider’s supported workflow: an interactive Copilot CLI session for its remote-control feature, a VS Code SSH or authenticated dev-tunnel host, or a Codespace.
- Connect from your phone or browser. Confirm that you can view the session and handle prompts or approval requests before leaving the host unattended.
- Check session and approval behavior. Copilot CLI remote control is for interactive sessions. Its remote interface can handle questions and permission requests, but it does not provide slash commands such as
/allow-all. Do not assume a phone interface can override the session mode or host’s approval settings. - Save at meaningful checkpoints. Commit and push valuable changes to the remote repository so they are available independently of a particular running session.
- Plan around the host’s limits. For a Codespace task that may exceed its configured idle timeout or 12-hour maximum lifetime, arrange to resume it or choose a host whose runtime limits fit the work.
What happens if the phone or host loses its connection?
Only the phone loses connection
If the host remains active and connected, the agent can continue without the phone. You will be unable to send prompts or respond to approvals until you reconnect, but that does not make the phone part of the execution environment.
The host loses connection or goes offline
Remote access to a local Copilot CLI or VS Code host is unavailable while that machine sleeps or cannot be reached. VS Code documents that a session can reconnect when a previously offline host returns. A remote-control client cannot keep a sleeping computer executing.

For Codespaces, GitHub states that losing internet access prevents access to the Codespace; the saved workspace state is available again after reconnecting. A stopped Codespace does not keep its processes running. See GitHub’s explanation of connecting to a Codespace after losing internet access.

Secure remote access
For VS Code dev tunnels, require authentication. VS Code warns that an anonymous tunnel URL could let others reach the machine and start agent sessions—a particular risk if approvals are automatic.

With Copilot CLI remote control, GitHub says session events—including conversation messages, tool execution events, and permission requests—are sent from the local machine to GitHub; remote commands are polled from GitHub and injected into the local session. Access is limited to the same signed-in GitHub account that started the session. Consider this data flow and your organization’s policy before enabling remote control.
Make changes durable
Codespaces preserves saved workspace changes across stop, restart, and rebuild, but deleting a Codespace deletes its work. For a durable handoff, commit and push important changes to a remote repository. When resuming a long-running Codespace, pull the default branch when appropriate so your workspace can incorporate current repository changes.

Account for Codespaces lifecycle and charges
Running Codespaces incur CPU charges; stopped instances continue to incur storage costs until deleted. GitHub also documents automatic deletion of stopped, inactive Codespaces after a default retention period of 30 days, which can be customized. That retention period is separate from the 30-minute inactivity timeout and the 12-hour maximum lifetime. Check current billing, retention, and organization settings before relying on a Codespace for long-running work.

Quick decision guide
- Your computer can stay awake and online: a local interactive session with remote control can work; the phone can disconnect without stopping the process.
- Your computer may sleep or go offline: move execution to a reachable remote host or cloud workspace rather than relying on the phone app to keep a local process alive.
- The task needs more than a Codespace’s configured runtime: plan a restart or select a host arrangement with appropriate limits.
- You need durable work rather than just a resumable session: save changes in the workspace and commit and push them to the remote repository.
