Then ask for a written quote that spells out the files, revisions, schedule, payment terms, credit, and usage rights. Those details matter as much as style: permission to use art on a streaming platform may not include permission to put it on merchandise.
Decide what you need before you contact an artist
“Stream artwork” can mean several different jobs. List each asset you want rather than asking vaguely for channel art. Your list might include emotes, badges, an overlay, a logo, an avatar, or a character illustration. Note the platform or platforms where each item will appear, and whether you need multiple versions or variants.
For each asset, gather any known platform dimensions or file requirements and ask the artist to confirm the final specifications in the quote. Requirements and deliverables vary by artist and asset; do not assume a bundle includes every size, format, or editable file you may later need.
Set the creative direction
Collect reference images and explain what you like about each one—for example, its palette, linework, mood, or composition. References communicate direction; they should not leave the artist guessing which elements you want borrowed or imply that another artist’s work should be copied. List required text, colors, characters, and objects, along with anything that must not appear.

Say whether you want the artist to interpret a broad idea or follow a detailed design. Also give the audience or brand context, such as the channel’s subject and tone, so the artist can make informed choices.
Set a workable budget and deadline
Give a budget range and a real deadline, including any date by which you need a draft for review. Ask whether the schedule is available before paying; an artist’s queue and priority options are specific to that artist. Keep the deadline, scope, and budget aligned: extra versions, assets, or late changes may require more time or a revised quote.

Find an artist whose work and terms fit
Review portfolios for finished work that resembles the style and kind of asset you need. Consider how the art reads at the size and in the context where it will appear—not just as a large portfolio image. Confirm that commissions are open and that the artist accepts your project type.
You can contact artists directly or use a marketplace. Their workflows, fees, and dispute processes differ, so check the current terms of the specific artist and service rather than assuming one arrangement applies everywhere. A portfolio match is only one part of the decision; compare what is included, how the artist works, and what uses the quote permits.

Request a quote with a written scope
Send the brief and ask the artist to confirm the scope in writing before work starts. A clear quote should make it possible for both of you to tell what counts as completion and what would be additional work.
- Assets and quantity: Name each item, the number of assets, and any variants or alternate expressions.
- Specifications and delivery: Confirm dimensions, file types, export sizes, and whether editable or source files are included.
- Stages and schedule: Ask when you will see sketches or drafts, what approval is needed at each stage, and the expected delivery date.
- Revisions and additions: Clarify how many revision rounds are included, what counts as a revision, and what new concepts, variants, or changes after approval cost.
- Payment and cancellation: Confirm the amount, when payment is due, whether payment can be split, and what happens if either party cancels or the project stops.
- Use, credit, and display: Agree on permissions and credit, and ask whether the artist may show work-in-progress or finished work in a portfolio.
These are questions to settle, not universal commission standards. Published artist terms illustrate how much arrangements can differ: one artist describes sketch approval, limits minor changes after approval, and takes payment upfront, with a split-payment option for larger commissions. Another lists specific emote and overlay deliverables. Treat any such example as that artist’s terms, not a norm for all commissions.

Agree on usage rights before paying
Describe your intended uses specifically rather than relying on a phrase such as “stream use” or “commercial rights.” Ask separately whether the commission covers:
- Use on Twitch, YouTube, or other named streaming platforms
- Monetized channel content and channel promotion on social media
- Merchandise, print sales, or other products for sale
- Future adaptations, edits, or new versions of the art
These permissions may be treated differently. Artist-published examples distinguish permitted platform use from merchandise licensing, and another example separates included platform use from commercial fees for other uses. Neither example establishes a general rule. Get the specific planned uses and any additional license fees written into your own agreement. If you later want to expand the use, ask the artist for permission before doing so.

Also agree who may modify the work, whether the artist may display drafts or finals publicly, and how credit should appear. Keep the agreement and any license text with the invoice and final files. This article offers practical planning guidance, not legal advice; for a high-value or complex license, consider getting professional advice on the agreement.
Review the work and archive the final delivery
Use the review stages you agreed to. Give consolidated, specific feedback at each stage and distinguish a correction within the approved scope from a new concept, extra variant, or change made after approval. If a request may fall outside the quote, ask the artist to confirm the effect on price and schedule before proceeding.
When the final files arrive, check them against the written scope: asset count, formats, dimensions, variants, and any source files promised. Save the agreement, invoice, license details, attribution instructions, and final exports together. That record makes it easier to credit the artist correctly and to confirm what uses you purchased later.
If the art is for Twitch emotes
Twitch documents emote attribution controls and a channel-specific Artist Badge for up to five contributors. Attribution visibility depends on the artist’s settings and Twitch controls, so ask the artist how they want to be credited and check the platform’s current controls when you publish the emotes.
