No SMD package is rad-hard by itself. Surface-mount describes how a device attaches to a circuit board; radiation performance depends on the semiconductor, its process and layout, and the tests, screening, and qualification behind its exact ordering code. Hermetic ceramic SMD parts are an established choice for demanding space applications, while non-hermetic and COTS parts can be viable only when their radiation behavior and mission-specific risks are adequately assessed.

What makes an SMD power device suitable for a radiation environment?

Start with the device’s radiation evidence, not its package outline. A useful assessment distinguishes total ionizing dose (TID) from single-event effects (SEE), including whether the device has been characterized for heavy-ion effects and how it behaves under the mission’s electrical and thermal stresses. Package type alone does not establish immunity to any of these effects.

ESA’s packaging program spans hermetic ceramic hybrids, non-hermetic packages, and discrete silicon, GaAs, and GaN devices. It also addresses the qualification, storage, conditioning, materials, and processes needed for spacecraft reliability. That scope reflects the real design problem: a package is one part of a larger component and assembly assurance plan.

For power devices, compare the candidate’s radiation results alongside its voltage and current limits, switching conditions, thermal path, derating requirements, footprint, solder process, and lot traceability. A part that meets an electrical rating is not thereby proven suitable for a particular orbit or mission duration; the radiation environment and operating stresses must be evaluated for the intended application.

How do the main package paths compare?

Package path Potential advantages Considerations
Hermetic ceramic SMD Established sealing and controlled materials for demanding environments. Usually larger and more expensive than less ruggedized alternatives; qualification and assembly constraints still apply.
Non-hermetic plastic or other non-hermetic SMD Can reduce cost, mass, and size. Needs strong lot homogeneity, radiation characterization, moisture and process control, and mission-specific acceptance. ESA describes non-hermetic and COTS development as an active area.
Bare die or hybrid Allows custom packaging and may enable closer integration. Moves more assembly, screening, and reliability responsibility to the program. ESA describes hermetic hybrids as generally complex multi-chip devices on a ceramic substrate enclosed in a hermetically sealed package.

These are trade-offs, not a universal ranking. A hermetic seal addresses package containment; it does not replace radiation test data or prove that the exact device variant meets a mission’s requirements. Conversely, a non-hermetic package is not automatically unsuitable, but its acceptance depends on evidence and controls appropriate to the application.

Which qualified or rad-hard SMD power devices are documented?

Specific examples show that rad-hard power transistors are available in surface-mount form. The following ratings and package descriptions are those stated by the manufacturers or DLA documentation; they are not a substitute for checking the current datasheet and exact orderable part.

Device or source Documented details What to verify for a design
Infineon IRHNMC9A7024 Rad-hard N-channel MOSFET in a ceramic SMD-0.2C package. Exact ordering code, applicable qualification and screening, radiation reports, and electrical and thermal limits.
Infineon rad-hard N-channel MOSFET family Family description gives a voltage range of 20 V to 650 V. Infineon says its ESA-qualified rad-hard MOSFETs are tested for TID performance and characterized for heavy-ion SEE under ESCC methods. Confirm that the specific candidate and ordering code—not just the family—has the required qualification and radiation evidence.
STMicroelectronics 2N5154HR ESCC 5203/010-qualified, 80 V, 5 A rad-hard bipolar transistor available in SMD.5 and TO-257 hermetic packages for space and harsh-environment power circuits. Check the package variant, current documentation, ratings for the intended operating conditions, and assembly compatibility.
DLA-documented radiation-hardened N-channel power MOSFET types Documentation includes both through-hole and surface-mount packages under JANTXVR and JANSR designations. Identify the exact device and package in the applicable documentation and confirm its status and requirements.

Infineon distinguishes commercial hermetic products from ESCC-5000 space-qualified flight parts. Its family description also identifies hermetic products screened to MIL-PRF-19500 and ESCC-5000 options. These designations and options are not interchangeable: confirm what applies to the particular part number and procurement lot.

Can a COTS plastic SMD part be used in space?

It can be considered, but the package or “space” label alone is not the basis for acceptance. NASA’s Small Spacecraft Avionics guidance says COTS devices can offer superior performance, energy efficiency, and affordability compared with rad-hard alternatives, while generally being more susceptible to radiation. The project must assess that susceptibility against its mission and provide appropriate assurance and mitigation.

Spacecraft commonly combine COTS processors or memories with rad-hard supporting electronics. Mitigations cited by NASA include error-correcting code (ECC), watchdog timers, memory scrubbing, and redundancy. These are system-level measures; they do not turn a COTS power transistor into a qualified rad-hard component or establish that it will tolerate a given radiation environment.

ESA describes non-hermetic and COTS development as an active area. For a non-hermetic candidate, evaluate lot homogeneity, radiation characterization, moisture and manufacturing-process controls, and the project’s acceptance criteria. Available documentation does not establish market-wide failure-rate or cost comparisons among ceramic, plastic, and bare-die packages, so those should not be inferred as universal outcomes.

What do the qualification labels actually tell you?

ESCC-5000, ESCC 5203, MIL-PRF-19500, QPL/QIRL status, and mission-specific screening are distinct evidence layers. A qualification designation can help identify the applicable control or approval basis, but a generic claim about a product family is not proof that every ordering code shares the same screening, radiation data, or flight status.

Ask whether the part is a commercial hermetic product, a QPL/QIRL-listed item, an ESCC-qualified device, or a flight-grade variant. Infineon specifically distinguishes commercial hermetic parts from ESCC-5000 space-qualified flight parts. Identical fit, form, and function do not imply identical screening or radiation assurance.

How should a project qualify and procure a candidate?

  1. Define the use case. Record orbit, mission duration, radiation environment, voltage and current stresses, switching frequency, thermal path, and assembly process.
  2. Request part- and lot-specific evidence. Obtain the exact radiation test reports, lot identifiers, screening flow, hermeticity data where relevant, and qualification certificate for the candidate package.
  3. Resolve the ordering-code status. Establish whether the exact code is commercial hermetic, QPL/QIRL, ESCC-qualified, or a flight-grade variant; do not infer status from a related part or family name.
  4. Complete project assurance reviews. Apply NASA or project-specific parts-management, materials and process, derating, and radiation-assurance reviews. NASA’s EEEE parts guidance includes upgrade screening requirements for hermetic JANTXV, Class Q, Class B, and SMD/883 devices, and directs radiation-tolerance applications to radiation-assurance experts.
  5. Check the physical implementation. Verify authorized supply, date and lot traceability, export status, package drawing, land pattern, solder and rework limits, and long-term availability before design release.

For the final selection, keep the radiation evidence tied to the exact orderable device and lot, and check that its electrical, thermal, package, and assembly characteristics fit the design. The appropriate package is the one supported by that combined evidence—not simply the one with the most reassuring-sounding label.
