On a Dell keyboard, Caps Lock changes letter case, Num Lock switches numeric-key behavior, and Fn accesses secondary actions marked on other keys. Fn Lock changes whether the top row defaults to F1–F12 or its special actions. Scroll Lock is a separate toggle on some models. Key locations and shortcuts vary by model, so use your keyboard’s product guide for an exact mapping.
What each lock and function key does
Caps Lock
Caps Lock toggles uppercase typing. Press it again to return to lowercase. Its indicator light is useful on many keyboards, but on certain Dell wireless models the light does not stay on; the key state can remain active after the light goes out.
Num Lock
Num Lock, sometimes labeled Number Lock, changes how number keys work. On a keyboard with a separate number pad, it switches that pad’s numeric input on or off. Some Dell laptops have embedded numeric functions on letter keys; when Num Lock is active, those keys can enter numbers instead. On some models, enabling this behavior involves Fn or a BIOS setting.
Scroll Lock
Scroll Lock is a separate toggle present on some keyboard layouts. Its shortcut and even whether it is available depend on the model. For example, Dell lists Fn+F6 for Scroll Lock on the Latitude 3180 and Latitude 7370; that combination should not be assumed for every Dell keyboard.

Fn
Fn is a modifier, usually near the lower-left corner of a laptop keyboard. Hold Fn while pressing a key with a secondary marking to use that key’s alternate action. Depending on the keyboard, these actions can include brightness, volume, display switching, or lock functions.
Fn Lock (Function Key Lock)
Fn Lock changes the top-row default on supported keyboards: whether those keys act as F1–F12 or trigger their associated special actions. Dell’s general keyboard guide describes Fn+Esc as a toggle on supported keyboards and also documents a BIOS setting for changing function-key behavior on some systems.

Why the same Dell shortcut may not work on every keyboard
Dell does not use one universal key map across its keyboards. A laptop may have embedded number keys where an external keyboard has a dedicated number pad; function-row defaults can differ; and some layouts omit particular keys entirely. The key’s secondary symbol and your model’s keyboard diagram are more reliable than a shortcut copied from another Dell system.

What to check when keys behave unexpectedly
- Letter keys type numbers: Check whether Num Lock is active, especially if your laptop has embedded numeric keys. Use the shortcut shown in your model’s guide; the setting can depend on Fn or BIOS configuration.
- The top row controls brightness or volume instead of acting as F1–F12: Check the Fn Lock state. On supported keyboards, try Fn+Esc; some systems also provide a function-key behavior setting in BIOS.
- A shortcut has no effect: Confirm that your keyboard has the relevant key and that the combination is listed for your exact model. A similar Latitude model may use a different mapping.
Dell’s general keyboard usage and troubleshooting guide notes that not every keyboard has every listed button and recommends checking product documentation for key locations. Find the model name or number on the product label or in the system’s support details, then open its keyboard diagram.

On the Dell Pro KB500, KB700, KB740, KM5221W, KM7120W, and KM7321W, the Caps Lock and Number Lock indicators stay lit for five seconds after a press, then go dark while the selected lock state remains active. Dell says this behavior preserves alkaline battery life. Press the lock key again to make the indicator light for another five seconds.
