Ubuntu 22.04 already includes the main controls for a cleaner desktop: choose a light or dark style and accent color, decide how desktop icons appear, and adjust the Ubuntu Dock. Use GNOME Shell extensions only when you need a specific behavior that those settings do not provide. There is no single “productive look” that suits everyone; the right setup depends on how you use your screen and switch between apps.

Start with Ubuntu 22.04’s built-in appearance settings

Ubuntu uses a customized GNOME desktop. Its default theme is Yaru, its default font is Ubuntu, and it includes AppIndicators, Ubuntu Dock, and Desktop Icons NG. Ubuntu Dock supplies the application sidebar, while Desktop Icons NG handles desktop icons. These Ubuntu-specific defaults mean that GNOME instructions written for another distribution may not match your desktop. Ubuntu’s overview of GNOME on Ubuntu describes these differences.

Choose a light or dark style and an accent color

  1. Open Settings → Appearance.
  2. Choose the light or dark style, then select an accent color that is easy to distinguish in your usual apps and controls.

Ubuntu 22.04 introduced ten color choices, available in light and dark styles. Ubuntu 22.04’s release notes describe the options. Pick for readability and preference rather than assuming that a particular color improves productivity.

Decide whether desktop icons belong in your workflow

Use the desktop-icon controls in Appearance settings to choose whether icons appear and where they are placed. Keep them visible if you regularly open files or shortcuts from the desktop; hide them if you prefer a less cluttered background or use the dock and file manager instead. The exact controls can vary with point releases and configuration, so follow the options shown on your Ubuntu 22.04 system.

Adjust the Ubuntu Dock around how you switch apps

Ubuntu 22.04 added settings for dock appearance and behavior. Open Settings → Appearance and use the Dock controls available there; the release notes describe these as new controls but do not guarantee identical labels or options across every point release.

  • Keep the dock prominent if you launch or switch among applications often and can spare the screen space.
  • Make it less prominent or change its behavior if you want more room for windows or prefer to reveal it only when needed, where your settings offer that choice.
  • Try the built-in controls first. Ubuntu Dock is already included, so a third-party extension is unnecessary for basic dock adjustments.

Judge the result by whether it makes your common actions easier without taking space you need. The available sources document customization options, not measured productivity gains.

Add GNOME Shell extensions only for a specific missing task

GNOME Shell extensions can change parts of the interface, including window management and application launching. They are useful when you can name a behavior you want that Ubuntu’s settings do not provide—not simply because a customized desktop seems more productive. GNOME’s guide to Shell extensions explains their role.

Before installing an extension, check that it supports the GNOME Shell version installed on your system. Compatibility is version-specific, and the sources here do not establish that any particular third-party extension currently works with every Ubuntu 22.04 setup. Keep the set small so you can identify which extension is responsible if the interface behaves unexpectedly.

Manage extensions with Extension Manager, not GNOME Tweaks

Ubuntu 22.04’s release notes state that GNOME Tweaks no longer manages Shell extensions and point to gnome-shell-extension-manager. The GNOME Extensions app can update extensions, open their preferences, and disable or remove ones you no longer want. Its current capabilities are listed on the GNOME Extensions app page.

Ubuntu’s release notes also document a limitation: Firefox installed as a Snap lacks NativeMessaging support for installing GNOME Shell extensions through Firefox. They offer Extension Manager as a workaround. Avoid relying on old browser-based installation instructions for that Firefox setup. See the Ubuntu 22.04 release notes for this caveat.

Build a setup you can easily revise

  1. Set the light or dark style and accent color in Appearance.
  2. Choose whether desktop icons help or distract, then set their placement if available.
  3. Adjust the included dock’s position or behavior using the controls shown on your system.
  4. If a specific workflow need remains, add one compatible extension and check its settings in Extension Manager.
  5. If the desktop becomes troublesome, disable or remove the extension you most recently added and see whether the issue stops.

Ubuntu 22.04 is an older LTS release, not the latest Ubuntu version. Canonical’s release notes state that Ubuntu Desktop maintenance updates run through April 2027, with additional security support available through ESM; consult the release notes for the lifecycle context.
