Google Slides does not provide a native “scrolling screenshot” command. First decide which result you need: separate images for each slide, a single tall image containing the whole presentation, or a multipage PDF. Google’s Slides API supports page-by-page thumbnails; one continuous image requires rendering the deck as an HTML page and then capturing that page with a scrolling-capable screenshot service. The latter workflow is described by ScreenshotOne, not guaranteed as a Google feature.
Choose the output before you capture

If the deck is confidential, do not publish it merely to obtain a screenshot. Use authenticated API access or keep the resulting files inside your controlled environment.
Method 1: Download an image for every slide with the Slides API
Google documents presentations.pages.getThumbnail for obtaining a thumbnail of a specific page. The sample requests PNG and shows a medium image of 800 × 450 pixels. That size is an example, not a full-resolution export guarantee. What you need
- A Google Cloud project with the Google Slides API enabled.
- OAuth credentials or another approved credential that can read the presentation.
- The presentation ID (the value between
/d/and/editin its URL). - Each slide’s page object ID, obtained from
presentations.get. - A writable output directory and enough storage for all downloaded images.
Request sequence
- Call
presentations.getfor the presentation ID. - Read the presentation’s
slidesarray in its returned order. Each slide has an object ID. - Call
presentations.pages.getThumbnailonce for every object ID, requesting PNG (or another supported format and size). - Download the image from the URL returned in each response immediately. Google documents a default 30-minute lifetime for that thumbnail content URL.
- Name files with a zero-padded sequence, such as
slide-001.png, so filesystem sorting preserves presentation order.
Python example
The following script uses Google’s Python client libraries. Install them with pip install google-api-python-client google-auth-httplib2 google-auth-oauthlib requests, place an OAuth desktop-client file at credentials.json, and run it once interactively. The first run opens a consent page and stores a refresh token in token.json.

Quality and lifetime considerations
- The documented 800 × 450 medium example is suitable for previews but may be too small for print, close reading, or dense diagrams.
- Download every URL promptly; do not store the URL as if it were permanent.
- Keep the slide index from the API response rather than sorting by title. Hidden or unusual slide content can make visual inspection important.
- For high-fidelity output, compare a few representative slides at each supported thumbnail size before processing the entire deck.
Method 2: Produce one tall, scrolling screenshot
A scrolling screenshot is not the same operation as downloading slide thumbnails. You need a web page whose document contains the slides in sequence, then a capture tool that renders the complete page rather than only the visible viewport.
Route A: Public HTML export
ScreenshotOne’s guide describes making the presentation public, changing the link to an HTML export URL, and requesting a scroll capture of that exported page. This is a vendor-described workflow, not an official Google statement that Slides has a native scrolling mode. Sharing settings and export behavior can change, so verify the link with a non-owner browser before automating it.
- In Google Slides, open Share and set the least-permissive public or link-sharing option that meets your requirements.
- Construct the HTML export URL according to the format documented in ScreenshotOne’s Google Slides scrolling-screenshot guide.
- Open that URL in an incognito window. Confirm that every slide appears, fonts load, and no sign-in prompt is shown.
- Pass the URL to a screenshot service configured for a full-page or scroll capture. Set a sufficiently wide viewport and allow the page to finish loading.
- Inspect the resulting image for clipped slides, missing fonts, duplicated pages, and an impractically large pixel height.
- Disable public sharing when the capture is complete if the deck should not remain discoverable.
Never use this route for confidential material unless your organization has explicitly approved public exposure. A deck that cannot be shared publicly needs an authenticated rendering path instead.

Route B: Authenticated rendering
Use the Slides API to read the deck, create your own internal HTML representation, and host it behind authentication or on a private network. Each slide can be represented as an image returned by the thumbnail API, or as structured content rendered by your application. Your capture browser then visits that private page with the necessary credentials. This takes more engineering than a public export, but it avoids publishing the presentation simply to make a screenshot.
For a review workflow, a vertical page containing one slide image per section is usually more predictable than trying to reproduce every Slides editing feature in HTML. Add deliberate spacing and labels, then capture the page at a fixed viewport width.
Control the dimensions
- Width: Choose a CSS viewport that matches the intended destination. A very narrow viewport can force unexpected wrapping in exported HTML.
- Height: Full-page capture may create a file too tall for ordinary image viewers or social platforms. Consider several chapter images instead of one extreme canvas.
- Fonts: Wait until web fonts finish loading; otherwise text can reflow between the first paint and the capture.
- Images: Wait for lazy-loaded assets and verify the bottom of the document, not just the first screen.
- Backgrounds: Check dark themes, transparent areas, and slide transitions. An HTML export may not reproduce editor-only effects exactly.
When a PDF is a better result
If the purpose is reading, printing, or sending the deck for approval, a PDF is often easier to navigate than one exceptionally tall bitmap. Google’s export help confirms that Drive exports can include presentation content, including slides and text, while warning that exports over maximum size limits may fail; the reviewed help excerpt does not specify a numeric limit for this scenario. A PDF also preserves page boundaries, allowing readers to zoom one slide at a time.
Use a scrolling image when the continuous vertical composition is itself useful—for example, a single page in a design review. Use per-slide PNGs when downstream systems need one asset per slide. Use PDF when pagination, text selection, or printing matters.

Troubleshooting
The thumbnail request returns “permission denied”
The credential does not have access to the presentation, or the required API is disabled. Confirm the account can open the deck, enable the Slides API in the same Cloud project, and repeat OAuth with the read-only Slides scope.

The image URL has expired
Google’s thumbnail content URL has a default 30-minute lifetime. Download it immediately after the API response; request a fresh thumbnail instead of retrying an old URL.
The scrolling image contains only the first slide
You captured the editor or a viewport rather than an HTML export configured for full-page scrolling. Test the export URL directly, then enable full-page/scroll capture and wait for the document to finish loading.
Slides are missing or duplicated
Check the exported page in an incognito window, confirm the deck’s sharing state, and inspect the capture’s bottom edge. For an internal HTML page, ensure your code inserts every slide in the API’s returned order and waits for lazy assets.

A medium thumbnail is only 800 × 450 in Google’s documented example. Request a larger supported thumbnail size or capture a wider HTML viewport; do not upscale a small PNG and expect it to regain detail.

The file is too large to open
Reduce the viewport width, split the deck into chapters, or use separate slide images or a PDF. A single canvas with many slides can exceed the limits of image viewers even when capture succeeds.
A private deck cannot be rendered by the service
Do not weaken sharing solely for convenience. Host an authenticated HTML representation and supply controlled credentials, or render the slides inside your own environment and capture locally.

- Decide between per-slide images, one scrolling image, and PDF.
- For thumbnails, record page IDs, download URLs immediately, and preserve API order.
- For scrolling output, test the HTML export URL without an owner session.
- Check fonts, lazy images, slide count, bottom-of-page completeness, and final pixel dimensions.
- Protect confidential decks; remove public sharing after a temporary capture.
- Keep the original deck and capture timestamp with generated files so a later revision can be distinguished.
