If you are evaluating Roo Code now, treat the feature and setup details below as historical documentation, verify the availability and maintenance of any replacement, and do not assume that the old extension can still be installed or supported.
What is Roo Code?
Roo Code was a VS Code extension built as an AI coding agent rather than a simple chat window. According to its official FAQ and Marketplace description, it could inspect a codebase, create and modify files, execute shell commands with approval, answer questions about a project, browse the web when that capability was enabled, and call external tools through MCP.
That agent model made Roo Code useful for work such as generating code, refactoring, debugging, writing documentation, planning migrations, automating repetitive tasks, and creating files or entire project structures. It also meant that a response was not merely text to copy: the extension could propose consequential edits or commands, so permissions and review were part of the workflow.
The important current fact is its status. The official docs and Marketplace listing record the shutdown date as May 15, 2026. The documentation points readers to ZooCode, described there as a community fork, and to Cline as an alternative. Those pages do not establish that either project is currently maintained, secure, officially endorsed, or available in a particular Marketplace edition. Check each project’s present documentation before moving a production workflow.

How Roo Code’s agent workflow worked
Files, terminal commands and approvals
Roo Code could read and write project files and run commands in the integrated terminal. Its FAQ warned that the model could make mistakes and that users should review changes. Terminal commands required approval unless a user enabled auto-approval. In practice, the safe operating pattern was to keep auto-approval off for unfamiliar repositories, inspect proposed diffs, and run destructive operations manually.
Web access and MCP
Web access was optional. The product warning noted that using it could expose sensitive information, so enabling browsing for a repository containing credentials, private source, customer data, or unreleased material required a separate privacy decision. MCP support allowed connections to external tools; every additional server expanded the set of data and actions that needed review.
Modes
The documented mode list included Code, Architect, Ask, Debug, and custom modes. The chat dropdown or a slash command was used to switch modes.

- Context condensing: reduce a long conversation’s context when needed.
- MCP integrations: connect external tools and data sources.
The feature page marked custom tools and concurrent file edits as experimental. Because the project has shut down, those labels should be read as historical capability notes, not a promise that an installable build or support channel exists today.

Is Roo Code free to use?
The official FAQ states that “The Roo Code extension is free and open-source.” That describes the extension itself, not the cost of the AI model behind it. Roo Code required an inference provider, and hosted providers typically charged for processed tokens or other usage. Your total cost therefore depended on the selected provider, model, prompt size, project context and frequency of use.
The provider guide historically listed hosted options including Anthropic, OpenAI, OpenRouter, Google Gemini and AWS Bedrock, along with local-model software such as Ollama and LM Studio. That guide was last updated May 15, 2026, so its list is historical documentation rather than a current compatibility guarantee. No current provider price or model ranking is established here; rates and availability change.
Hosted versus local models
Provider choice affected five practical decisions: usage cost, privacy, model capability, compatibility and setup effort.

The documentation named Ollama and LM Studio for local setups but did not specify a required computer, GPU or performance level. Do not infer a hardware recommendation from the provider list alone. Whichever route you consider, verify that the provider and model still work with the replacement extension you choose.
Privacy and security considerations
Roo Code’s privacy policy, last updated September 11, 2025, said that relevant files, prompts and project context could be transmitted to the selected model provider. The provider’s own terms determined how that data could be processed or stored. API keys were described as stored locally and sent only to the provider selected by the user.

The policy described telemetry as including a VS Code machine ID, feature-usage patterns and exception reports, while excluding code and prompts; it also described telemetry as opt-out in settings. Local models were identified as a way to avoid third-party transmission. These statements come from the product policy, not from an independent security audit, and they do not establish how a successor handles data.
- Keep secrets, tokens and private keys out of prompts and accessible files.
- Use
.rooignoreor the equivalent controls in a maintained replacement to limit exposure. - Review diffs before committing agent changes.
- Require approval for shell commands, especially commands that delete, migrate or publish data.
- Assess every MCP server and web integration as an additional trust boundary.
What a historical setup required
The documented setup model required VS Code, the extension, and an inference provider. A typical historical flow was:

- Choose a hosted provider or configure a local endpoint such as Ollama or LM Studio.
- Enter the provider credentials or endpoint in the extension settings.
- Open a repository, select a mode, and provide a narrowly scoped task.
- Review proposed file edits and approve terminal commands individually.
Because the extension was shut down, step one may no longer be possible and the remaining steps may not work with an archived build. Do not disable VS Code or operating-system security controls to force an installation. For a replacement, follow that project’s current installation and provider instructions instead.
Troubleshooting and failure modes
The extension is missing from the Marketplace
This is consistent with the stated May 15, 2026 shutdown. Do not treat a third-party download as an official release. Confirm the provenance, maintenance and security policy of any fork before opening a sensitive repository.
The model does not respond
Check the provider key, endpoint, model identifier and account balance or quota. A free extension does not make provider inference free. With a local model, verify that the local server is running and that the configured endpoint matches the replacement’s current requirements.

Edits are wrong or commands are unsafe
Reduce the task scope, provide acceptance criteria, inspect the diff, and leave auto-approval disabled. Revert unwanted changes before asking for another attempt.

Stop the task, remove secrets from the working tree and prompt, tighten ignore rules, and review the selected provider’s retention terms. If third-party transmission is unacceptable, use a maintained local-model workflow only after verifying its actual behavior.
An MCP tool fails
Check that the server is running, its authentication is valid, and the client and server support the same protocol expectations. Grant only the tools required for the task.

Should you use Roo Code now?
No—not as a new dependency. Its historical agent design explains why it attracted developers, but the official project has recorded a shutdown, and current maintenance, security support and successor compatibility are not established by the cited materials. If you are migrating, inventory the workflows you need, verify a maintained alternative, review its provider and privacy terms, and reproduce the approval and file-exclusion controls before granting repository access.
