The reported example: a Netflix link could become netflitwitter.com when clicked. That was a reported change to post text, not proof that X had replaced every Twitter address across its domain infrastructure.
What happened to links in X posts?
Ars Technica reported on April 11, 2024, that X’s iOS client had begun automatically replacing the text “twitter.com” with “x.com” in posts on April 8. The report’s example illustrates a risk in matching characters without checking where a hostname begins and ends: the characters “x.com” also appear within “netflix.com.” A broad replacement could therefore turn that domain into “netflitwitter.com,” sending a click to a different address.
The report is the source for this specific behavior and example. It does not establish how many posts or users were affected, and it is not evidence that every Twitter URL stopped working. Nor does it show that the change was made at the DNS or server level.
Why can replacing text break an unrelated website address?
A hostname is a structured name, not just a string of characters. In netflix.com, the sequence x.com occurs at the end of the name, but it is not a separate hostname boundary. A routine that blindly replaces matching characters can alter the surrounding name instead of changing only a standalone twitter.com address.

Safer URL handling parses the address and checks the hostname as a complete component before changing it. The reported Netflix example is a warning about the risks of a text substitution; it is not evidence that all link processing on X works this way.

Does twitter.com redirect to x.com?
The direction changed during the rebrand. TechCrunch reported on July 24, 2023, that x.com redirected to twitter.com at that early stage. A later federal court opinion describes the subsequent arrangement: X Corp. continued to own and maintain twitter.com and configured it to redirect visitors to x.com. The opinion also says web access to the X platform occurred exclusively on x.com. These are different points in the transition, not contradictory descriptions of one unchanged setup.

The early shift happened amid a fast-moving rebrand: TechCrunch reported on July 25, 2023, that Twitter’s official account handle had changed to @x. That context helps explain why the old and new names appeared together, but it does not independently verify the April 2024 link-substitution behavior.

What the incident does—and doesn’t—show
- It shows a reported risk from changing text without respecting hostname boundaries.
- It does not show that every link containing “twitter.com” was changed, that every Twitter URL stopped working, or how widespread the issue was.
- It is separate from t.co’s documented link-shortening and destination-checking functions.
- A 2024 arXiv preprint identified 16 late-2023 academic papers that used Twitter and X in different ways. That count concerns inconsistent naming during the transition—not broken links, affected posts, or users. Teixeira da Silva and Nazarovets, 2024
