Budget phones do not all lose support early, but update promises can differ by exact model, region, carrier, and release channel. To check a phone, confirm its precise model and regional version, read the manufacturer’s model-specific OS and security-update terms, then check the device’s current update status in Settings. One installed update—or the Android version currently shown—does not establish how long future support will last.
Why support can differ between phones
Manufacturers set support commitments for particular models or selected product families rather than applying one rule to every phone they sell. Motorola says its update cycles and timing can vary by product, region, and channel, and that some carriers may follow different update cycles. Samsung’s February 9, 2022 announcement also applied its stated maximums only to selected Galaxy devices.
That evidence shows why a lower-priced phone may have a different promise from another model, including one from the same brand. It does not establish that every budget phone receives fewer updates, or prove a specific reason a manufacturer sets a particular model’s term. There is no established market-wide figure here for how many fewer years of support budget phones receive than premium phones.
Check OS upgrades and security updates separately
An operating-system upgrade and a security update are different parts of a support policy. A phone may have a stated commitment for both, and the promised duration or eligibility should be checked separately rather than inferred from the phone’s Android version.

For example, Google’s Pixel support page, accessed in 2026, lists seven years of OS and security updates for Pixel 8 and later phones, counted from each device’s first availability on the Google Store in the U.S. The page lists five years of OS and security updates for Pixel 7, Pixel 6, and Pixel Fold generation devices, counted from initial U.S. Google Store availability. These are Pixel model-group terms, not a rule for all Android phones; check the exact model’s listing on Google’s Pixel update support page.
Samsung’s February 9, 2022 announcement offered up to four generations of One UI and Android OS upgrades and up to five years of security updates for selected Galaxy devices. These were selective maximums announced at that time, not a universal current promise for every Samsung phone. Samsung noted: “Availability and timing of One UI upgrades and features may vary by device model and timing of Android OS upgrades.” See the Samsung Newsroom announcement for its scope and caveat.

How to check support for a phone
- Identify the exact device and version. Find the model name or number in the phone’s settings or on its packaging, and note the country and carrier version. If the phone is used or imported, make sure the support information applies to that regional variant.
- Find the manufacturer’s model-specific support terms. Use its official software or security-update page and look up the exact model. Record the OS-upgrade commitment, security-update term or end date, any stated patch cadence, and regional or carrier caveats. Motorola’s EMEA security page asks users to select a product for its update cycle and says, “Devices not listed will no longer receive security or OS updates.” Motorola also cautions that plans and timing can change. Check the Motorola EMEA security-update page; availability and terms can differ in other regions.
- Check the phone’s current update status. On a Pixel, Google gives the path Settings > System > Software update to see update status. For Motorola phones in India, Motorola’s instructions are Settings > System Updates or About Phone > System updates, then Check for updates. Menu labels can differ by model, software version, and region. See Google’s instructions for checking and updating a Pixel and Motorola India’s software-update instructions.
- Confirm unclear carrier-specific terms. If the phone’s update depends on a carrier, or the manufacturer’s page does not make the end date clear, check the carrier’s model-specific update information or ask the carrier or manufacturer to confirm it. A 2018 FTC report described vendor and carrier websites, device settings, and notifications as ways consumers could find update information; it is historical context, not a current inventory of support pages. See the FTC report.
Google directs owners of non-Pixel Android phones to the relevant manufacturer or carrier. A phone’s Settings page tells you its present software status; the manufacturer’s model-specific terms tell you the published support commitment. Neither an up-to-date screen nor a single update received is, by itself, a future end date.

When weighing two or more candidates, compare the same support details for each exact variant. In particular, calculate the time remaining from your expected purchase date to the published security-support end date, rather than comparing only the number of years originally promised.
