If an Amazon checkout payment fails, open Your Orders and use the controls on the affected order to retry or change its payment method. If the purchase was made on another site with Amazon Pay, manage it in Amazon Pay Activity instead. A card decline does not necessarily mean you lack funds: the bank or card issuer decides whether to authorize the charge and can explain a decline.
First, identify where the order was placed
Amazon.com retail orders and Amazon Pay transactions use different recovery screens and support channels. Amazon Pay is used for purchases on another merchant’s website or app; it is not the same as an order placed directly on Amazon.com.

Check the order or transaction status and any message shown there before changing saved payment details. The status indicates which recovery path applies.
Fix a failed payment on an Amazon.com order
- Go to Your Orders and locate the affected order.
- Select Retry Payment Method next to the order to try the current method again.
- To use another card or payment method, choose Change Payment Method, select an available option or add a card, and confirm.
If Amazon declines the payment again, Amazon says it will cancel the order. Place a new order if you still want the item.

Check card and billing details
- Verify the card number and expiration date, especially if the bank recently replaced the card.
- Make sure the billing address and phone number match the information the bank has on file.
- Check that the payment method is current and eligible for the transaction.
A change to a saved payment method in Your Payments does not automatically update an open order. To change the payment for an order already placed, use that order’s controls in Your Orders. See Amazon’s guidance on managing payment methods.
Why a card can be declined even when funds are available
Amazon says the bank or card issuer—not Amazon—can explain why it declined an authorization. The issuer may flag a first-time or high-value purchase, require you to approve the transaction, or enforce a daily purchase limit. A card that worked previously, an available balance, or a partial charge for an order that has shipped does not rule out an issuer-side decline. Contact the issuer and ask whether it needs you to authorize the purchase or whether a limit or security control is involved. Amazon’s declined-payment instructions likewise direct customers to their bank for the reason.

Understand pending authorizations and apparently reserved funds
An order change, cancellation, or shipment split can result in payment authorizations that appear as pending charges or reduce the available balance. Ask the issuer which authorizations are pending and when it expects to release them. Amazon Pay says some banks may hold these authorizations for 7 to 10 business days; this is not a guaranteed release period, and handling depends on the bank. Update a suspended Amazon Pay transaction
- Open Amazon Pay Activity and find the transaction marked Update payment method.
- Choose Manage and update the payment method for that transaction.
- Check the transaction status afterward; Amazon Pay says it will appear as Processing or Completed once resolved.
This process applies to Amazon Pay purchases on another merchant’s site. For help with an Amazon.com retail order, contact Amazon customer service rather than trying to manage it as an Amazon Pay transaction.

If the problem continues
- Amazon.com order: Read the order-specific message in Your Orders, confirm your billing details, then retry or change the payment method on that order. If it is declined again, contact the issuer and place a new order if Amazon cancels the original and you still want the item.
- Amazon Pay transaction: Use Amazon Pay Activity to follow the transaction’s update prompt. If the bank says the payment is authorized but the transaction remains unresolved, contact Amazon Pay support about that transaction.
- Funds still appear unavailable: Ask the issuer to identify the pending authorization and explain its release timing; Amazon cannot provide the issuer’s decision or control its hold.
Amazon’s help pages provide these workflows but generally do not state publication dates, and interface labels may change. Issuer decisions, payment eligibility, and authorization handling can also vary by account, transaction, and region.
