What Happens to Your Games and Purchases If You Lose Access to Your PSN Account?

If you temporarily lose access to your PlayStation Network (PSN) account, your purchases are not automatically deleted: start with Sony’s account-recovery process. But digital purchases are licenses tied to the account used to buy them, so a different account does not inherit your library. A suspension can block access while it is in effect, and Sony says account termination may permanently end access to account-linked content. These terms below are specific to Sony’s U.S. materials; check your region’s terms and applicable law for local rules.

What happens to your games and purchases depends on why you cannot sign in

“Losing access” can mean anything from a forgotten password to a permanent account termination. These situations have different consequences:

Temporary sign-in problem	Sony provides account-recovery and support routes. Account suspension	You may be unable to sign in or use PlayStation features, including the Store. Console suspension	The restricted console cannot connect to PSN under any account and cannot access Store-purchased content. This does not, by itself, mean your account has been terminated.
Account termination	Sony says termination ends PSN access and may make account information and content that depend on PSN unavailable. Its U.S. terms describe termination as irreversible.

Sony’s account recovery page says, “If you’re unable to access your account for PlayStation, you can recover your account online.” If recovery succeeds, you can use the account associated with your purchases again.

Why a new PSN account does not take over your library

In Sony’s U.S. terms, PlayStation Store purchases are personal licenses for private, non-commercial use, and Store content is accessed through the account used for the order. Sony’s March 2025 U.S. terms state: “When you order Content from PlayStation Store, you buy a personal license to use that Content for private, non-commercial use.” They also say, “If you delete or close your Account, you may lose access to and use of any purchased Content.” Read the PSN Terms of Service.

That means creating a replacement account is not a way to transfer the old account’s digital games, add-ons, or other purchases. If you cannot sign in, try to recover the original account before treating the library as lost. The terms and any available remedies may differ outside the United States.

How to try to recover your account

1. Open Sony’s How to recover your account for PlayStation page. If you set up a passkey, follow the passkey recovery route; otherwise, use the account-recovery flow with access to the account email.

2. If you cannot access the email address, cannot provide verification details, forgot your sign-in ID, or believe someone changed your account information, use the Online Assistant or contact PlayStation Support. Sony also outlines sign-in troubleshooting on its sign-in issues page.

3. If Sony says the account is suspended, check the notice and account status, then follow the appeal or support route for that case. See Suspensions on PlayStation.

4. After regaining access, follow Sony’s account-security guidance linked from the recovery page.

What to do if Sony suspended your account or console

A suspension is a restriction, not the same thing as account termination. Sony says an account suspension prevents sign-in and access to PlayStation features, including multiplayer and the Store; some products or services may remain unavailable during the suspension, even if paid. The notice and Sony’s case-specific support route are the right places to check what applies to your account.

A console suspension is different: the affected device cannot access PSN using any account and cannot access content purchased from the Store. If you can sign in elsewhere, that distinction can help identify whether the restriction applies to the account or the console. Sony explains both on its suspensions page.

If the suspension followed a reversed payment

Sony warns that reversing a payment can lead to an account or console restriction. Its support page says, “If your payment method has had a charge reversed on a PlayStation™Store purchase, this can result in your account being restricted from accessing our online services.” If the reversal created a debt, follow Sony’s account-debt resolution process. Sony says repayment can restore access where a debt is owed; the outcome depends on the reason and the individual case. Do not use a chargeback as a recovery tactic.

What account termination means for purchased content

Sony’s U.S. terms say termination ends access to PSN and may make account information and content that depends on PSN unavailable. The terms do not generally promise refunds for account-linked items or unused wallet balance, except where the agreement or applicable law requires one. Sony describes termination as irreversible, so do not assume support can restore a terminated account or that purchases will be refunded. Local terms and consumer protections may differ.

Some games also depend on a publisher account

For some third-party-published products, access may depend on a linked publisher account as well as the PSN account. Closing or unlinking that publisher account can affect access to the game or service. This is a product-specific dependency, not a rule that applies to every PlayStation purchase; check the game publisher’s account terms and support information for the title in question.
