What May Cause this Warning Message

You may receive this error when you plug in your Apple device for charging. You may also receive this error message if you connect your device to a computer. The following are possible reasons for this error:

  1. The iOS (Apple software that runs on iPhone and iPad) may be outdated
  2. The accessory you are using may be bad
  3. Your accessory may not be supported by the Apple device you connected it to
  4. The port of your device may be dirty or damaged

How to fix This Message

If you receive this message try the following in order:

Option 1: Change to an Apple Certified Accessory

One of the causes of “this accessory may not be supported” error is if you connect an Apple device with a non-Apple accessory. If you are using a USB cable, or charger change to the one that came with your Apple device.

Option 2: Check the Device’s Port for Dirt or Defect

Another cause of this error may be due to a dirty port. Check the port you are connecting the accessory to in your device.

By port I mean the part of your iPhone for example that you connect your charger to. Check that this port is not dirty. If it has anything blocking it clean it with the steps in How to clean your Apple products.

When you confirm that the port is not dirty, it may be damaged. If it is damaged you may need to take it to Apple to fix it.

Option 3: Disconnect and Reconnect Your Accessory

When it comes to tech stuff, surprisingly this solves most problems. Your connection to your device may be loose. Simply disconnecting the iPhone or iPad and reconnecting it may solve this problem.

Option 4: Update Your iOS to the Latest Version

If the Operating System (iOS) on your Apple device is out of date, it may cause “this accessory may not be supported” error.

To update your iOS, follow the steps in this link Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If Everything Else Fails…

None of these worked? Then your device may have a problem. The next step will be to Contact Apple Support. You may also walk into an Apple store.

Conclusion

Incompatible accessory errors are fairly common with Apple devices. But the fix is also fairly easy. I hope you were able to fix the problem with your iPhone or iPad with one solution suggested in this guide.
