The Java Attach API lets a Java tool connect to an already-running Java virtual machine (JVM), load an agent, or access management facilities. Whether it works depends on the target JVM’s attach provider, runtime settings, and security policy—not merely on whether both processes are Java programs.

What the Java Attach API does

Oracle describes the Attach API as a mechanism for attaching to a Java virtual machine. It is intended for tools that need to interact with a running application, including management tools that must work even when a management agent was not loaded at startup. Oracle’s Attach API overview introduces that use case.

The API is a Java API, not a general-purpose network endpoint. A client asks an implementation-specific provider to connect to a target JVM. Once connected, it can load a Java or native agent, read system or agent properties, or start a JMX management agent. These operations are performed against the target process and are subject to the runtime’s implementation and security controls.

How attachment works

  1. Identify the target. The client supplies an identifier to VirtualMachine.attach(id). The identifier format depends on the provider; it is commonly the operating-system process ID when JVMs run in separate processes.
  2. Obtain a handle. If the provider recognizes and permits the target, the call returns a VirtualMachine handle representing that JVM.
  3. Perform an operation. For example, loadAgent loads a Java agent JAR. The target adds the JAR to its system class path and invokes the agent’s agentmain method. Other operations include native library loading and starting a JMX management agent.
  4. Detach. Detaching ends use of that attachment. Further operations on the detached handle fail with IOException.

The API may reject attachment if the identifier is invalid, the target does not exist, or no available provider supports it. For operation details and exception definitions, see Oracle’s Java SE 8 VirtualMachine specification; check the documentation for the JDK and runtime actually in use, because that specification is version-specific.

Compatibility depends on the JVM provider

Do not assume that an attach client can connect to every JVM. Providers implement the attachment mechanism, and their compatibility rules can be narrower than the Java API’s general description. Eclipse OpenJ9, for example, documents that its Attach API connects only to another OpenJ9 VM. Confirm both the target and the provider available to the caller before relying on attachment. OpenJ9’s Attach API documentation describes its implementation and platform details.

External attachment and self-attachment are also different setups. In external attachment, a separate tool connects to the target. Self-attach is a product-specific mechanism in which an application arranges for an agent to attach to its own JVM. The required dependencies, supported runtimes, and configuration behavior belong to the particular agent—not to the Attach API as a whole.

Example: Elastic APM self-attach

Elastic documents a self-attach option for its APM Java agent: include the apm-agent-attach artifact and call ElasticApmAttacher.attach() early in main. Elastic says this approach does not require changing JVM options and documents support for Windows, Unix, Solaris, HotSpot-based JVMs, and OpenJ9 in its stated environments. Those claims apply to Elastic’s documented setup, not to every attach client. Elastic also notes that only one Elastic agent instance/configuration takes effect per JVM and that JNA may be needed in specific JRE or fallback cases. Check the current Elastic APM Attach API instructions for dependency and environment details.

Security: attachment can load code into a running process

Because attachment can be used to interact with a live application and load agent code, treat it as a privileged capability. Eclipse OpenJ9 warns: “Because the Attach API can be used to connect to a running application, you must control access to it to ensure that only authorized users or processes can use it.”

  • Disable attachment if the application does not need it, using the control documented for the exact runtime.
  • If attachment must remain available, restrict which users and processes can reach the target and its attach mechanism.
  • Where appropriate, consider controls that prevent dynamic agent loading, such as OpenJ9’s documented -XX:-EnableDynamicAgentLoading option. Confirm the option’s applicability and behavior for the target JVM before using it.

OpenJ9 documents -Dcom.ibm.tools.attach.enable=[yes|no] to enable or disable its Attach API. Its support defaults and filesystem/temporary-directory behavior vary by platform; the documented exception for z/OS is OpenJ9-specific. Do not treat these options, defaults, or directory requirements as universal Oracle/OpenJDK settings. Consult the runtime’s own current security guidance before changing permissions or configuration.

  1. Verify provider compatibility. Confirm the caller has an attach provider that supports the target JVM implementation. An unsupported target can result in AttachNotSupportedException.
  2. Check runtime controls. Confirm attachment has not been disabled and that dynamic agent loading is allowed if the operation requires it. Also check applicable security policy and permissions.
  3. Check the target’s state and timing. A target that has just started, is overloaded, suspended, stopped, or waiting during connection setup may not accept attachment. OpenJ9 lists these as possible causes; exact behavior depends on the implementation.
  4. Inspect temporary-directory access when using OpenJ9. Check the availability and permissions of the relevant temporary directory and common attach directory according to OpenJ9’s platform-specific instructions. Do not apply those filesystem requirements to another JVM without its documentation.
  5. Separate attach from agent startup. AgentLoadException indicates an agent could not be found or started; AgentInitializationException indicates initialization failed. For OpenJ9, target-side agent exceptions may be visible on the target’s standard output or error streams.

Record the exact exception, target JVM distribution and version, operating system, relevant runtime options, and whether the failure occurs during attachment or agent initialization. That information distinguishes provider incompatibility from a disabled capability, a target-state issue, or an agent-specific problem.
