At the prices reported for Amazon UK’s October Big Deal Days (also called Prime Day 2) on 6 October 2026, the Sony WH-1000XM5 is the better-value buy at £192, while the newer WH-1000XM6 costs £319. That £127 gap buys the XM6’s reported improvements in sound, noise cancelling and foldable design; whether they matter enough depends on your priorities. Sale prices and availability can change, so check the live listing before buying.
What were the reported Amazon UK prices?
What Hi-Fi? reported the following Amazon UK prices on 6 October 2026:
| Headphones | Reported sale price | Reference price in What Hi-Fi? |
|---|---|---|
| Sony WH-1000XM5 | £192 | £380 |
| Sony WH-1000XM6 | £319 | £399 |
Those are source-reported prices, not a guarantee of what Amazon will charge now. The XM5’s reference price is especially uncertain: TechRadar also reported it at £192 on 5 October, but cited £279 rather than £380 as the reference price. The sale price is corroborated; the claimed saving depends on which reference price is used. Check the current listing and its price history rather than relying on a headline saving.

What does the extra £127 get you?
Sound and noise cancelling
What Hi-Fi? gives both headphones five stars and describes the XM5 as a strong choice for sound, features and comfort at its reported sub-£200 price. It judges the XM6 better for sound detail, dynamics and openness, with improved noise cancelling. These are the publication’s review assessments, not comparative measurements established here.
What Hi-Fi? staff writer Harry McKerrell summed up the newer model this way: “Both pairs are a joy to listen to, but if you want the best wireless sound that Sony has to offer, it’s the WH-1000XM6 every day of the week.” That is McKerrell’s editorial judgment, rather than a Sony claim.

Portability and battery
What Hi-Fi? says the XM6 folds away. The available information does not establish a direct comparison of the two models’ packed case size, so don’t assume how much smaller one is in a bag.
Sony lists up to 30 hours of continuous music playback with noise cancelling on for both models. These are manufacturer maximum figures, not a promise of everyday battery life. Sony UK lists the XM5 at up to 40 hours with noise cancelling off; the cited XM6 30-hour specification comes from Sony’s Singapore page, so it should not be treated as a UK-specific specification.

Which Sony headphones should you buy?
Choose the WH-1000XM5 if value matters most
At the reported £192 price, the XM5 is the more compelling pick if you want highly regarded sound, features and comfort while spending less. What Hi-Fi?’s five-star review and value recommendation support that case; the price still needs checking at checkout.
Pay more for the WH-1000XM6 if its upgrades matter to you
Consider the XM6 if you are willing to spend the reported additional £127 for the improvements What Hi-Fi? describes in sound and noise cancelling, or you specifically want its foldable design. The available claims do not establish that every listener will notice the difference or find it worth the premium.
