The painting is J.M.W. Turner’s Rome, From Mount Aventine, dated 1836. Smithsonian Magazine (October 8, 2026) and the Associated Press (September 29, 2026) both report that small brush hairs, palette-knife marks and fingerprints are still visible on its surface. These are reported observations of the canvas. Neither outlet presents them as a formal forensic examination.

Which Turner painting this is

Turner painted several views of Rome, so the title matters. The painting in this article is Rome, From Mount Aventine, dated 1836. A different Turner work, Modern Rome – Campo Vaccino, is dated 1839 and has its own history.

  • Rome, From Mount Aventine (1836): the picture described in this article, and the one that reports about visible fingerprints refer to.
  • Modern Rome – Campo Vaccino (1839): a separate painting. A UK government export-review notice from November 15, 2010 documents that work. Its provenance and exhibition history do not apply to Rome, From Mount Aventine.

What the painting shows

Turner views Rome from the Aventine Hill, looking across the Tiber. In the foreground, a priest and a young girl stand beneath a large umbrella pine. The view is built from sketches Turner made during an 1828 visit to Rome. According to the AP’s account of Sotheby’s information, he probably began the picture in Rome and finished it in London for exhibition at the Royal Academy.

What is visible on the surface

Both Smithsonian and AP describe the canvas as exceptionally well preserved, which is why the small marks of its making remain legible. Three kinds of trace are reported.

Small brush hairs

Smithsonian reports that tiny hairs from Turner’s brush can still be seen embedded in the paint. They are the most fine-grained detail in the reporting and are visible as the paint dried in place.

Palette-knife marks

Thick passages of paint were worked with a palette knife, leaving scraped and ridged marks. AP’s account of Sotheby’s description puts these alongside the brushwork in the picture’s thickest areas.

The reporting does not say how many fingerprints there are or where exactly they appear, so readers should treat the detail as a general description rather than a catalogued count.

How Turner built up the paint

Julian Gascoigne, a Sotheby’s specialist, explains the technique in AP’s account. He describes the surface as built from several layers working together:

  • translucent layers of hazy light and glazes, applied in succession
  • thick impasto from vigorous brushstrokes
  • scraping with palette knives
  • occasional direct work with the fingers

Gascoigne’s most quoted line is that Turner applied oil paint “as if it was watercolor, building it up in successive translucent layers of hazy light and glazes, and the thick impasto of vigorous brush strokes and scraping of palette knives, and he even used his fingers on occasion.”

Who commissioned and owned it

Smithsonian reports that the painting was commissioned by Hugh Andrew Johnstone Munro of Novar, who kept it for the rest of his life. It later entered the collection of Archibald Primrose, the 5th Earl of Rosebery. AP likewise identifies Munro as the patron and reports that the Rosebery family owned the picture for a long time before the 2014 sale.

The 2026 sale and the 2014 price

AP reported in September 2026 that Sotheby’s planned to auction the picture in London on December 9, 2026. The same report says the work sold at Sotheby’s in 2014 for $47.6 million. Both facts are dated to those reports. The sale status, any estimate and any result should be checked against Sotheby’s own listing, because they may have changed since September 2026.
