Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Spring Boot 2.1 can enable HTTP/2, and Spring MVC can pass Servlet 4.0’s PushBuilder to a controller. They are separate requirements: the selected server and runtime must support HTTP/2, the container must expose the Servlet 4.0 API, and the client must support server push. This is a version-specific implementation pattern, not a general performance recommendation today.
How do I enable HTTP/2 in Spring Boot 2.1?
Set server.http2.enabled=true in your application configuration. This enables Boot’s HTTP/2 support only where the embedded server and runtime can provide it; it does not ensure that a request can use server push. Spring Boot 2.1 does not support cleartext HTTP/2 (h2c), so configure SSL/TLS first. The Boot 2.1 guide also notes that JDK 8 does not provide HTTP/2 out of the box. See the Spring Boot 2.1 HTTP/2 configuration reference.
server.http2.enabled=true
HTTP/2 support and Servlet 4.0 support are distinct. Check the resolved embedded-server dependencies and the prerequisites for the specific server rather than inferring Servlet API support from a successful HTTP/2 configuration.
Which Spring Boot 2.1 embedded servers support Servlet 4.0?
| Embedded server | Servlet API support in the documented Boot 2.1 setup | HTTP/2 notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tomcat 9.0.x | Servlet 4.0 | JDK 9 or later, or JDK 8 with libtcnative and its dependencies, according to the Boot 2.1 reference. |
| Undertow 2.0 | Servlet 4.0 | Undertow 1.4 and later support HTTP/2 without an additional JDK 8 requirement in the Boot 2.1 reference. |
| Jetty 9.4 | Not Servlet 4.0 | Boot’s reference describes HTTP/2 support for Jetty 9.4.8 with the Conscrypt dependencies covered in its guide. HTTP/2 support does not make Jetty 9.4 compatible with Servlet 4.0. |
These are version-specific notes from the Spring Boot 2.1 reference and the Spring Boot 2.1.4 reference. Confirm your actual dependency versions when replacing Boot’s default server.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How do I use PushBuilder in a Spring MVC controller?
Spring Framework 5 supports javax.servlet.http.PushBuilder as an argument to a @RequestMapping method. For example:
import javax.servlet.http.PushBuilder;
import org.springframework.web.bind.annotation.GetMapping;
@GetMapping("/")
public String home(PushBuilder pushBuilder) {
if (pushBuilder != null) {
pushBuilder.path("/css/site.css").push();
}
return "home";
}
This illustrates the API shape; it is not a verified, drop-in application. Check imports, context-path behavior, container configuration, and the client you intend to support. Spring Framework’s Servlet-stack reference documents the controller argument; a later reference is also available in the Spring Framework 5.3.26 reference PDF.

Set a path and push only appropriate resources
The Servlet API’s PushBuilder is based on the current request. Set the resource path before calling push(). Promised requests must be safe and cacheable; a static stylesheet is a more suitable example than an action that changes server state. See the Servlet 4.0.3 PushBuilder API.
Why might PushBuilder be null?
The Servlet API obtains a builder from the current HttpServletRequest using newPushBuilder(); that method can return null when the client does not support server push. Spring’s controller argument does not guarantee a usable builder for every request. Keep the null check and let the normal page response proceed when push is unavailable.

When is server push worth using?
HTTP/2 server push was designed to let a server anticipate follow-up requests and potentially save a round trip. In practice, the server must predict what the client needs while accounting for cache state, content negotiation, and user behavior. Incorrect predictions consume network capacity and can compete with more important responses. RFC 9113 explains these trade-offs in its HTTP/2 specification. No directly comparable performance benchmark for Spring Boot 2.1 server push is established here, so do not assume a measured speedup.
Browser availability is another constraint. Chrome for Developers reported that HTTP/2 server push would be disabled by default in Chrome 106 and subsequent Chromium-based releases. Its 2022 site-use analysis found 1.25% of HTTP/2 sites using the feature; a later rerun found 0.7%. Those figures describe Chrome’s analyses of site usage, not a current browser-wide adoption survey or a performance test of Spring Boot applications. Details are in Chrome’s announcement on removing HTTP/2 Server Push.

Implementation checklist
- Enable
server.http2.enabledand configure TLS for the Boot 2.1 setup. - Verify the embedded container provides Servlet 4.0; Jetty 9.4 is not suitable for this API.
- Confirm the HTTP/2 prerequisites for the chosen server and JDK.
- Accept that
PushBuildermay be null and handle that request normally. - Set a valid resource path before
push(), and promise only safe, cacheable resources. - Check real client support and cache behavior before relying on push; do not assume it improves performance.
