If you sent Cancel Meeting in Outlook and then changed your mind, there is no documented Undo cancellation command. The cancellation may already have been delivered to attendees, and Outlook removes the meeting from the organizer’s calendar after the cancellation is sent.

You can still recover the deleted meeting item in some Outlook versions. However, recovering the item and reversing the cancellation are not the same thing. If attendees have already received the cancellation, you may need to send a new meeting request or update.

What happens when you cancel an Outlook meeting?

Only the meeting organizer can cancel a meeting or send a new meeting update. When the organizer opens a meeting, selects Cancel Meeting, and selects Send Cancellation, Outlook removes the meeting from the organizer’s calendar. Microsoft’s documented cancellation process does not include a post-send Undo or Uncancel command.

The original meeting may be recoverable from Deleted Items, Recoverable Items, or, particularly in New Outlook, Sent Items. Restoring it may put the calendar item back, but it does not silently retract a cancellation that has already reached attendees.

First, check whether you actually sent the cancellation

If the cancellation window is still open, close it without sending. If you already selected Send Cancellation, check Sent Items for the cancellation message and ask an attendee whether they received it.

Do not rely on Ctrl+Z. Microsoft does not document that keyboard shortcut as a way to undo a sent meeting cancellation. Use item recovery or recreate the meeting instead.

Recover a canceled meeting in classic Outlook for Windows

These steps apply to the documented recovery workflow for Outlook for Microsoft 365, Outlook 2024, Outlook 2021, Outlook 2019, and Outlook 2016.

  1. Open Outlook and select Mail.
  2. Open Deleted Items.
  3. Find the deleted meeting item. Searching by the meeting subject or organizer can help.
  4. Right-click the item and select Move > Other Folder….
  5. Select Calendar, then select OK. You can also use Home > Move > Move to a different folder.
  6. Open Calendar and open the recovered meeting.

If Outlook recognizes the recovered item as an active meeting rather than merely a cancellation message, you may see an option such as Send Update. Edit the meeting if necessary and select Send Update to notify participants.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This last step is not guaranteed. A recovered item may be only a deleted message or may no longer function as the original meeting object. If there is no usable Send Update option, recreate the meeting and invite the participants again.

Recover the meeting from Recoverable Items in classic Outlook

If the item is not in Deleted Items, it may still be in the mailbox’s Recoverable Items area.

  1. In Outlook, select Mail > Deleted Items.
  2. On the Home tab, select Recover Deleted Items From Server.
  3. Select the meeting item. Calendar items use the same envelope icon as other recovered items, so sort by From and look for the relevant person if needed.
  4. Select Restore Selected Items, then select OK.
  5. Return to Deleted Items, find the restored item, and move it to Calendar.

Recovered items are returned to Deleted Items first. The recovery command may be unavailable for some account types. If Deleted Items is shown as Trash, or if Recover Deleted Items From Server is missing, that mailbox may not support this recovery method.

Recovery also depends on retention settings. Microsoft gives examples such as 30 days in Deleted Items followed by another 14 days in Recoverable Items, but your organization’s administrator can set different limits.

Recover a canceled meeting in New Outlook for Windows

New Outlook uses different labels from classic Outlook.

If the meeting is in Deleted Items

  1. Select Deleted Items.
  2. Select the meeting.
  3. On the Home ribbon, select Move.
  4. Select Move to a different folder, choose Calendar, and confirm.

Depending on the item and the version of Outlook, you may instead be able to right-click it and select Restore. Microsoft states that recovered calendar items return to their original folders when possible; otherwise, they are placed in Calendar.

  1. Open Deleted Items.
  2. Select Recover items deleted from this folder.
  3. Select the meeting.
  4. On the Home ribbon, select Restore.

After restoration, check the Calendar and determine whether the item is a working meeting that can be updated or only a cancellation-related message.

New Outlook workaround: recreate the request from Sent Items

A Microsoft Q&A answer describes a practical New Outlook workaround when the canceled event has disappeared from the Calendar:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Sent Items.
  2. Find and open the meeting or cancellation item you previously sent.
  3. Select Meeting options to recreate the meeting request.
  4. Check the date, time, time zone, attendees, location, meeting link, and message.
  5. Send the new request.

If the item is not in Sent Items, check Deleted Items and restore or move it to Calendar if Outlook offers that option.

This creates and sends a new invitation. It is not a silent reversal of the original cancellation. Attendees may receive a new meeting request and must accept it again.

Recover or recreate the meeting in Outlook on the web

In Outlook on the web, start with the recovery path:

  1. Open Deleted Items.
  2. Select Recover items deleted from this folder.
  3. Select the meeting item.
  4. Select Restore.

If Outlook cannot recover a usable meeting, Microsoft Q&A documents this fallback:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Sent Items.
  2. Open the canceled meeting message.
  3. Select the three-dot menu.
  4. Select Other reply actions > Reply all by meeting.
  5. Verify the meeting details and recipients.
  6. Select Send.

If that option is unavailable or fails, create a new meeting manually and invite everyone again. The Recoverable Items interface requires a computer; Microsoft says it is not available through a mobile browser.

What to do after sending the replacement meeting

Send a short explanation so people do not mistake the new invitation for a duplicate:

The previous meeting was canceled by mistake. Please use this new invitation and disregard the cancellation notice.

Check that the replacement has the correct:

  • date, start time, end time, and time zone;
  • attendee list and optional attendees;
  • location or Teams meeting link;
  • agenda, notes, and attachments;
  • recurrence settings; and
  • response status.

Do not assume that everyone’s original acceptance remains attached to the replacement invitation. Participants may need to respond again.

Recurring meetings need extra care

Outlook can cancel one occurrence or all future occurrences of a recurring meeting. The choice depends on the recurring-series dialog Outlook displays when you open the series.

Recovery depends on what was canceled:

Situation Likely next step
One occurrence was canceled Recover or recreate that occurrence, then send an update or new invitation.
All future occurrences were canceled Recover the series if possible, or create a new recurring meeting beginning with the required date.
The entire recurring meeting item was deleted Search Deleted Items and Recoverable Items for the series, then verify every occurrence.

Restoring one occurrence does not necessarily restore the full recurring series. After recovery, inspect the recurrence pattern and future dates before sending an update.

Why the meeting may be impossible to restore

The meeting may not be recoverable if it has exceeded the mailbox retention period, if your account does not support deleted-item recovery, or if Outlook retained only the cancellation message rather than a usable meeting object.

Outlook.com and Outlook on the web automatically remove messages from Deleted Items after 30 days. Items removed from Deleted Items can generally be recovered for another 30 days, subject to the account’s policies. Work or school accounts may have different administrator-controlled retention periods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the meeting is business-critical and no recovery option appears, contact your Microsoft 365 administrator promptly. An administrator may be able to determine whether the item still exists in the mailbox’s Recoverable Items storage, although administrative recovery does not guarantee that the original attendee responses can be restored.

Quick decision guide

What you find What to do
Meeting in Deleted Items Move or restore it to Calendar, then check whether it can send an update.
Meeting in Recoverable Items Restore it, move it from Deleted Items to Calendar, and verify the meeting object.
Cancellation or meeting item in Sent Items Use New Outlook’s Meeting options or Outlook on the web’s Reply all by meeting fallback to send a new request.
Nothing recoverable Create a new meeting and invite the participants again.
You are an attendee, not the organizer Ask the organizer to recover or recreate the meeting; attendees cannot reverse the organizer’s cancellation.

FAQ

Can I press Ctrl+Z to undo a sent Outlook meeting cancellation?

No documented Microsoft procedure uses Ctrl+Z to reverse a cancellation after it has been sent. Recover the deleted item or create and send a new meeting request.

Can an attendee undo a canceled meeting?

No. Only the organizer can send a meeting update or cancellation. An attendee must ask the organizer to restore or recreate the meeting.

Is a canceled meeting always in Deleted Items?

No. Depending on the Outlook client and mailbox behavior, it may be in Deleted Items, Recoverable Items, or Sent Items. It may also have been permanently removed by retention policies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does moving the cancellation message back to Calendar restore the meeting?

Not always. Moving an item to Calendar restores the calendar item only if Outlook recovered a valid meeting object. A cancellation message may not function as the original meeting, so you may need to send a new invitation.

How long can I recover a deleted Outlook meeting?

The period depends on the account and administrator retention policies. Outlook.com and Outlook on the web generally retain items in Deleted Items for 30 days, with items removed from that folder generally recoverable for another 30 days, subject to policy.

The Bottom Line

There is no reliable Undo cancellation command after Outlook sends a meeting cancellation. First check Deleted Items and Recoverable Items, then verify whether the restored item is a working meeting. In New Outlook or Outlook on the web, use the available Sent Items workaround when necessary. If recovery fails, recreate the meeting, invite the participants again, and explain that the replacement invitation supersedes the mistaken cancellation.
