Keep the code sharp and high-contrast, leave a clear margin around it, size it for its data and scan distance, and test a real print on the material you plan to use. No single size or DPI guarantees reliable scans in every situation.
Why a QR code can fail after printing
A screen preview does not reproduce the conditions of a physical scan. Printing can soften edges or make modules—the individual light and dark squares—hard to distinguish. A tight crop or nearby text can intrude on the quiet zone, while the surface, lighting, scan angle and distance can affect what a phone camera captures.
How much data the code encodes also matters: a denser symbol has smaller modules at the same overall printed size. A shorter destination or payload can help keep the pattern less dense. Print quality, material and camera capability all affect the result, so success on one phone or on screen is not proof that the finished item will scan reliably.
Prepare the QR code artwork for print
Keep the quiet zone clear
Leave a blank margin around all four sides of the symbol. Practical print guidance recommends a quiet zone at least four modules wide; a module is one square in the code. Use strong contrast and crisp edges
Use dark modules against a uniform, light background where possible. Avoid weak contrast and backgrounds that make the squares blend into their surroundings. Start with sharp artwork: vector files can scale without raster pixelation, while a raster image should be created at the final print dimensions rather than enlarged from a small image. These are production recommendations, not a claim that a particular file format is required by the QR specification.
Avoid unnecessary encoded content
Encode only what the code needs to carry. Extra text or data can make the pattern denser, leaving less room for each module at a given printed size. If the code looks crowded at the size you need, simplifying the payload or enlarging the symbol may make the print easier to scan.

Choose a size for the scan conditions
There is no universal minimum print size or DPI that ensures a successful scan. The useful size depends on the code’s density, how far away a person will scan, print quality, substrate and finish, lighting, and the camera being used. A size that works on a hand-held label may not suit a sign scanned from several steps away.
Treat numerical size or resolution rules of thumb as starting points for a print proof, not guarantees. For formal symbology requirements, ISO/IEC 18004:2024 is the current fourth edition; its scope includes encoding, dimensions, error correction, reference decoding and production quality requirements. The ISO catalog and IEC Webstore listing describe the standard, but do not establish one consumer-phone print size or DPI that works in every setting. Consult the full standard for precise conformance requirements.

Proof the actual printed result
A physical proof is the practical way to check the combined effects of artwork, printer, stock or surface, finish and placement. Use the same production setup planned for the finished item. This is a practical check, not a claim that it is a formal ISO test.
- Print at the intended size. Use the final artwork and the planned printer, material, finish and placement.
- Try multiple phones. Scan the physical sample with more than one phone rather than relying on a screen preview or a single device.
- Recreate likely use. Test at the expected scanning distance and angle, in realistic lighting.
- Adjust and proof again if needed. Enlarge the symbol, improve contrast, simplify the payload or adjust the print process, then test a new proof.
Use the right quality benchmark
ISO/IEC 18004:2024 defines QR Code symbology and includes production quality requirements. Its public catalog description establishes the standard’s scope, not every detailed threshold; do not present a practical printing tip as an official requirement. FairQR and EUQR’s contextual size guide discuss factors such as quiet zone, contrast, scan distance and print conditions. Their practical recommendations are not universal guarantees or substitutes for checking the final print.
