To improve your Google Wifi mesh connection, run a mesh test in the Google Home app, move any weak point closer to its nearest point, and test again. If performance is still poor, identify whether the problem is the mesh link, your internet service, household bandwidth use, interference, or a wired connection.
Start by checking which part of the connection is slow
Google Wifi performance depends on several links: your modem and internet service connect to the primary Wifi point; additional points connect to the primary point or one another; and your phone, computer, or other device connects to a nearby point. A problem on any part of that route can feel like “slow Wi-Fi,” but each calls for a different fix.
Google’s mesh test checks the connection between the primary Wifi point and additional points. Its internet speed test, by contrast, measures the internet connection at the router or primary point. A client device’s speed can differ from that router-level result. Google describes a speed test as a snapshot that can vary with network congestion, timing, and server location, so one result does not guarantee the same speed throughout your home. Google’s mesh test guide and speed-test guidance explain the distinction.

In Google Home, run a mesh test. It is available when your network has multiple mesh routers or points. Note which point reports a weak connection. See Google’s mesh test guide for current instructions.

Google Wifi - AC1200 - Mesh WiFi System - Wifi Router - 1500 Sq Ft Coverage - 1 pack- Google Wifi is a scalable, flexible mesh Wifi system that blankets your home in reliable coverage and keeps buffering at bay; 1 Google Wifi point replaces your router and additional points expand your network to keep the connection fast in every room[1]
- Google Wifi gives you whole home coverage[1]; 1 Pack covers up to 1500 square feet and 3 Pack covers up to 4500 square feet; points work together to create a mesh network for more coverage
- Intelligently works behind the scenes to make sure your Wifi remains fast, so you can stream with speed[1]
- Simple setup in a few steps; use the Google Home app to create your network and get online in minutes[2]
- Parental controls let you manage screen time, restrict certain kinds of adult content, and pause Wifi to specific devices on your mesh network whenever you want
-
Move the weak point closer to its nearest router or point. If possible, place it between that point and the area with poor coverage, rather than at the far edge of the area where Wi-Fi is already weak.
-
Put the point in an open location, with fewer physical barriers. Dense walls, furniture, and appliances can obstruct or interfere with Wi-Fi signals.
-
Run the mesh test again to see whether the point’s connection has improved. Google does not specify a universal ideal distance between points or promise a particular speed increase from moving one.

Distance and obstructions affect the connection a client device receives, too. Test with your device near a Wifi point, and, if practical, move the device closer to the point serving the problem area. Google lists distance, physical barriers, device capability, Wi-Fi frequency, and interference among factors that can affect speed. See Google’s speed and performance guidance.
Compare the router, mesh, and client-device results
Use the location and type of slow result to choose what to check next. The comparisons below are a practical diagnostic inference from Google’s descriptions of the mesh and internet speed tests, not a formal Google diagnostic rule.
| What you find | What it suggests | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A weak result for one point on the mesh test | The wireless path to that point may be limiting service in the area it covers. | Move the point closer to its nearest point and into a more open position; then retest. |
| The router-level internet speed test is poor, as are results near multiple points | The issue may be upstream of the mesh, such as the ISP service or modem, rather than one room’s mesh link. | Check the service and modem, and look for household bandwidth use or equipment issues. |
| The router-level result is better, but a client device is slow near one point | The mesh path, that point’s placement, or the device’s local Wi-Fi connection may be involved. | Compare the device near the primary point and near the point serving the problem area; check point and device placement. |
| Performance changes when Ethernet equipment or cabling is in the path | A cable or intervening wired equipment may be a bottleneck. | Check cable and equipment ratings. For internet speeds above 100 Mbps, Google recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 Ethernet cable. |
Speed varies with the home’s layout and construction, the ISP plan, devices, interference, and time. The comparison can narrow the likely part of the connection to investigate, but it cannot by itself prove the cause.

- Each nest Wi Fi router provides up to 2200 square feet of fast, reliable Wi Fi coverage for your home. [1]
Check the internet service, modem, and household demand
If the router-level speed test is slow, or several areas perform poorly, look beyond a single mesh point. Google identifies ISP or modem problems, simultaneous device use, nearby routers, Ethernet cabling, and equipment as possible causes of slow internet. Streaming or downloads on other devices can compete for the available connection.
-
Check whether your ISP service or modem is experiencing a problem. Google notes that restarting the modem may resolve some common issues; follow the modem maker’s instructions for your specific equipment.
-
Consider whether simultaneous streaming, downloads, or other demanding use is consuming bandwidth.

Google WiFi - AC1200 - Mesh WiFi System - WiFi Router - 3000 Sq Ft Coverage - 2 Pack- Maximum Range 2x 1,500 Sq Ft Each: Maximum Range Combined for a total of 3,000 Sq Ft
- Google Mesh Wi-Fi router plugs into your internet provider's modem to create your Wi-Fi network.
- For more coverage additional Google Mesh Wi-Fi routers can be added to your system and are compatible with multiple Google Mesh devices.
-
Check for another router broadcasting the same network name or nearby routers that may contribute to interference.
-
If Ethernet is part of the connection, inspect the cable and intervening equipment. For internet speeds faster than 100 Mbps, Google recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable. This is a wired-link check, not a general fix for a weak wireless mesh connection.

Use video-call prioritization with its bandwidth trade-off in mind
Google Home offers a preferred activities setting for video conferencing. Google lists Google Meet, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Slack, GoTo Meeting, and Webex Meetings as supported services. If the setting is available for your network and video calls are the priority, it may help focus network preference on those activities. See Google’s preferred activities instructions for the current app controls.

- Nest Wifi Pro is up to 2x faster than Wi-Fi 6, so you get super fast speeds and a reliable connection for your entire home[1]
- Three Wi-Fi routers provide up to 6600 square feet of fast, reliable Wi-Fi[2]; and you can customize your setup to create a mesh Wi-Fi system for the coverage you need
- Nest Wifi Pro uses the latest, most advanced Wi-Fi 6E technology[3], so it isn’t compatible with previous generations of Google Wifi or Nest Wifi
- Nest Wifi Pro automatically adjusts your Wi-Fi network’s performance and activity; it prioritizes video calls and helps websites load quickly
- It has built-in technology to make sure your connection is strong and consistent, even at the edge of your Wi-Fi network’s coverage[2]
Google says a priority device reserves 70% of bandwidth. That can slow other devices, and preferred activities may also suffer if the ISP connection does not have enough bandwidth. Prioritization does not increase the internet speed delivered to your home.
Check compatibility before adding or replacing mesh hardware
Google Wifi is a mesh system, not a generic extender intended to add coverage to an existing router. Google Wifi and Nest Wifi devices can form compatible mesh arrangements, but Nest Wifi Pro cannot be combined in one mesh with older Google Wifi or Nest Wifi devices. Confirm the generation compatibility before buying or adding equipment using Google’s Google Wifi overview.
Google says more than five points may degrade performance and is not recommended. Add or replace hardware only when the diagnosis and compatibility support that step; a new point is not a guaranteed remedy for slow ISP service, a weak modem connection, interference, or an Ethernet bottleneck.
