DeskTime does not have a permanent free plan that we could confirm. Its pricing page lists a 14-day free trial, and its help center says a subscription is needed to keep tracking once the trial ends. If you want a tool that stays free, Toggl Track is the strongest starting point, because its pricing page describes the Free plan as free forever. RescueTime is the closer match if you want automatic app and website tracking, but the plans on its current pricing page are paid. Clockify is worth considering for timers and timesheets, although its free seat limit is described inconsistently across its own pages.
The pricing and help pages below were checked on 7 October 2026. Plan limits and trial terms change, so confirm them on the live pages before you commit.
Does DeskTime have a free plan?
No permanent one is listed. DeskTime’s official pricing page (desktime.com/pricing) offers a 14-day free trial and lists paid Pro and Premium plans. Its help center article, How much does DeskTime cost?, states that a subscription is needed to continue tracking when the trial ends.

Choose a tool by how you track time
The right alternative depends on whether you want time captured automatically or started by hand. The table compares the options against the workflow each one serves.

If you need time captured without starting a timer, only the automatic tools qualify here: DeskTime and RescueTime. If you prefer to start and stop timers yourself, Toggl Track and Clockify fit that style.
Toggl Track: the strongest free-forever option
Toggl’s pricing page, Toggl Pricing Plans for Teams & Individuals, states: “Toggl’s Free plan is free forever.” The page is the company’s own statement, and no individual is named.

Toggl’s work timer page centers on projects, tasks, and activities, and the product runs through web, mobile, desktop, and browser-extension experiences. That makes it a good fit for people who log work against specific projects and want a timer they can start from wherever they are.
The trade-off
Toggl is a manual timer. It records only what you start, so it will not reconstruct a day from app and website activity the way DeskTime or RescueTime does. Confirm the exact user, project, and reporting limits on the free tier before you rely on it for a team.
RescueTime: the closest match for automatic tracking
RescueTime is the nearest functional match to DeskTime. Its product overview describes automatic tracking of time spent in apps and websites, together with focus tools that help you see and protect productive blocks.

The cost reality
The plans on RescueTime’s plans and pricing page are the paid Solo and Team plans. Do not assume a free tier applies to your account or region without checking that page. If automatic capture matters more to you than a free plan, RescueTime is the tool to compare directly against DeskTime’s trial.

Clockify is a plausible choice for timers and timesheet-style logging. Its Plans & Pricing page and its free trial page both point to a free offer, but they do not agree on the number of people you can add for free. One pricing excerpt describes unlimited users, while the free-trial offer describes inviting up to four people at no cost. The evidence does not show which statement applies to the current free plan, so check the live plan comparison before choosing Clockify for a team.
What to compare before you switch
- Capture method: automatic app and website monitoring versus a timer you start and stop yourself.
- Free access: a permanent free plan versus a time-limited trial.
- Free-tier limits: users, projects, history, reports, exports, and integrations. These change, so check the live page.
- Devices: desktop, web, mobile, and browser extension coverage for your actual setup.
- Outcome: personal focus insights versus client, project, or billable timesheets.
Privacy and monitoring
Automatic trackers record which apps and sites you use, which is more sensitive than a manual timer. Before you choose one, confirm that the tool can be paused, check what it captures, and decide whether the use is personal or involves monitoring other people. If you are tracking employees, the rules on what you may collect depend on your employer and local law, and the vendor pages do not address that question.
