Yes—but the clearest match is X-Men Origins: Wolverine: ComicBook.com calls the film awful and its game solid. The game earned its reputation by making Wolverine’s healing and brutal close-quarters combat feel central to play, rather than relying only on the movie’s plot. ComicBook.com’s discussion is the strongest support for the “bad movie, good game” pairing here. Two other games, Spider-Man 2 (2004) and The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, are worthwhile tie-ins, but the sources considered do not establish their films as bad—so they belong in a separate category.

The strongest bad-movie, good-game match: X-Men Origins: Wolverine

This is the best-supported answer to the title’s exact question. The movie has a poor reputation in the cited coverage, while the game is described as solid. Its appeal comes from making the character’s defining traits playable: Wolverine fights at close range, takes heavy damage, and visibly heals as combat unfolds. That healing-factor presentation turns an element of the fiction into immediate feedback during play.

The game also leaned into violent action. ComicBook.com notes that an M-rated edition was available on the applicable platform; that qualification matters, because the rating should not be assumed to apply to every platform or edition. If you are seeking a particular version, check its platform and rating rather than relying on the title alone.

That combination—an adaptation with its own satisfying action and a mechanic tied directly to its hero—is why the game can work better as a game than the film works as a movie. “Great” remains a judgment, not an objective ranking, and this is the clearest example in the available coverage rather than proof that every movie adaptation is redeemed by its game.

Great tie-ins that do not meet the “bad movie” test

A good movie-related game is not automatically evidence of a bad source film. These two are useful recommendations, but the cited material supports them as strong tie-ins, not as cases where the game definitively surpasses a poorly received movie.

Spider-Man 2 (2004): swinging makes the city the attraction

The game’s signature strength is web-swinging through a broad, explorable Manhattan. Instead of treating traversal as a way to get from one fight to the next, it makes moving around the city a core pleasure. The movie’s quality is not established by the sources cited here, so this is a recommendation for a strong tie-in, not a bad-film pairing.

It is not flawless. In his June 30, 2004 review, GameSpot’s Jeff Gerstmann called it “a good game” but said its repetitive gameplay and open-ended design made it “feel like a missed opportunity.” That balance is useful: the swinging and exploration stand out, while the activities can become repetitive and the content feels limited. VGC also notes that release timing led to content cuts, a reminder that a promising central mechanic does not guarantee a fully realized game.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay: a prison escape, not a plot replay

Escape from Butcher Bay is a prequel to The Chronicles of Riddick and Pitch Black, built around Riddick’s attempt to escape a prison. Its mix of stealth and action gives the licensed setting a distinct game structure rather than simply retelling a film. GamesRadar+ also highlights its limited HUD and original story as features that help it stand apart.

That makes it a strong example of an adaptation expanding a fictional world into a game-specific experience. It is not evidence that either film was bad: the reviewed coverage praises the game but does not establish poor reception for its source movies.

What makes a movie tie-in work?

The most useful distinction is whether a game turns a character or setting into an enjoyable mechanic, or merely follows the movie’s events. Wolverine’s healing and combat, Spider-Man’s web-swinging, and Riddick’s stealth-action escape each give the player a reason to engage beyond remembering the film.

  • Character translated into play: Wolverine’s healing factor is visible in the action; Spider-Man’s movement is built around swinging.
  • A game-shaped story: Riddick’s prison escape and prequel framing let the game inhabit the setting without simply reenacting a film.
  • Room for limitations: Repetition, content cuts, platform differences, and dated presentation can coexist with a distinctive core idea.

GoldenEye 007 is often relevant to discussions of movie tie-ins, but it does not belong among bad-movie examples on the evidence considered here. VGC uses its development history to illustrate how a game can benefit from time and creative latitude: Rare moved away from an on-rails concept and developed a first-person shooter. That is useful genre context, not proof that its source film was poorly received.
