The example below uses Java 17+ with Jackson 3.x, one reusable client, a blocking request, and an illustrative endpoint. Replace the URL, fields, and status handling with the contract for the API you are calling.
Choose a compatible Java and Jackson version
This tutorial uses Jackson 3.x, whose project documentation sets Java 17 as its baseline and uses the tools.jackson package family. Jackson 2.x uses com.fasterxml.jackson packages and has a Java 8 baseline. They are not source-compatible drop-in replacements: keep the dependency coordinates and imports from the same major version. FasterXML recommends Jackson 3 for new projects while continuing to maintain 2.x; check the project’s version and release guidance when selecting a release.
The examples require Java 17 or later and the java.net.http module, which is part of the JDK. Add Jackson Databind 3.x to your project using the current dependency version and coordinates shown by the Jackson Databind project. This article does not pin a release number because releases change. If your project is on Jackson 2.x, use its matching dependency coordinates and change the imports and API usage accordingly rather than mixing the two major versions.
Define the JSON data shape
Jackson handles conversion between Java values and JSON; it does not send HTTP requests. These records represent an illustrative create-user request and success response. Their names and fields are examples, not a schema for any particular service.

For a real API, model the fields documented by its request and response schemas. Custom Java time types or third-party types may require additional Jackson modules or configuration; verify the requirements for the Jackson version and types you use.
Create and reuse an HttpClient
Build a client once and reuse it for requests that share its configuration. A built HttpClient is immutable and can send multiple requests; it typically manages its own connection pool, so creating a new client for each operation can prevent connection reuse. Configure only the options your application needs. For example, a connection timeout belongs on the client builder:

import java.net.http.HttpClient;
import java.time.Duration;
HttpClient client = HttpClient.newBuilder()
.connectTimeout(Duration.ofSeconds(10))
.followRedirects(HttpClient.Redirect.NORMAL)
.build();
The timeout above limits connection establishment, not the entire request. Set a separate timeout on each HttpRequest when appropriate. Redirect policy, proxy, authenticator, and preferred protocol version are also client-level choices; they are not required for every client. See Oracle’s Java SE HttpClient documentation.
Serialize JSON and build the request
Create a Jackson mapper, serialize the request object to JSON text, then use an HttpRequest builder to provide the URI, method, headers, timeout, and body publisher. BodyPublishers.ofString publishes the JSON text as the request body.

import java.net.URI;
import java.net.http.HttpRequest;
import java.time.Duration;
import tools.jackson.databind.ObjectMapper;
ObjectMapper mapper = new ObjectMapper();
CreateUserRequest payload = new CreateUserRequest("Ada Lovelace", "ada@example.com");
String json = mapper.writeValueAsString(payload);
HttpRequest request = HttpRequest.newBuilder()
.uri(URI.create("https://api.example.com/users"))
.timeout(Duration.ofSeconds(20))
.header("Content-Type", "application/json")
.header("Accept", "application/json")
.POST(HttpRequest.BodyPublishers.ofString(json))
.build();
https://api.example.com/users is illustrative; substitute the endpoint and method required by the target API. Send Content-Type: application/json when the request body is JSON. Use an Accept header only as supported by the endpoint’s contract. Add authentication or other headers according to that service’s documentation. Oracle’s HttpRequest documentation describes request construction and body publishers.
Send the request and handle the response
Each send call requires a body handler, which determines how the response body is consumed. For ordinary JSON-sized responses, BodyHandlers.ofString() is straightforward. Check the status before interpreting the body as the expected success type; an HTTP response can arrive successfully even when the application operation failed.

import java.io.IOException;
import java.net.http.HttpResponse;
try {
HttpResponse<String> response = client.send(
request,
HttpResponse.BodyHandlers.ofString()
);
int status = response.statusCode();
if (status < 200 || status >= 300) {
throw new IllegalStateException(
"Create-user request failed with HTTP " + status + ": " + response.body()
);
}
UserResponse user = mapper.readValue(response.body(), UserResponse.class);
System.out.println("Created user " + user.id());
} catch (IOException e) {
// Handle transport or response-body I/O failures.
throw e;
} catch (InterruptedException e) {
// Preserve the interrupt signal if this method cannot propagate it.
Thread.currentThread().interrupt();
throw new IllegalStateException("Request interrupted", e);
}
This example treats any 2xx status as success for illustration. A particular API may define a narrower set of success statuses, return no body for some successful operations, or use a different error format. Inspect the response status, headers, and body according to that API’s contract. Keep transport failures, non-success HTTP statuses, and invalid JSON distinguishable so callers can respond appropriately. Do not retry every failure automatically: retry safety depends on the operation’s idempotency and the provider’s guidance.

A concrete response class can be passed directly to Jackson, as above. For a JSON array, use a type-aware representation rather than asking Jackson to deserialize into a raw List; otherwise element types may not be retained as the intended DTO type. Jackson’s tree and data-binding facilities can also be useful when the response shape is partly unknown. Confirm the exact type-construction API against documentation for your Jackson major version before using it.

Choose blocking or asynchronous execution
send blocks the calling thread until the response is available. It fits straightforward control flow and works well when the calling context is already synchronous. sendAsync returns a CompletableFuture, allowing response handling to be composed without blocking at the send call. Neither approach is universally faster; choose according to how the surrounding application manages work and threads.
client.sendAsync(request, HttpResponse.BodyHandlers.ofString())
.thenApply(response -> {
if (response.statusCode() < 200 || response.statusCode() >= 300) {
throw new IllegalStateException("HTTP " + response.statusCode());
}
return mapper.readValue(response.body(), UserResponse.class);
});
The sketch illustrates composition; in production, decide how to handle checked JSON exceptions and failed futures, and where the result should be consumed. Dependent stages without an explicitly supplied executor may run on an executor or on the thread completing the future, depending on timing. Avoid putting long-running or blocking work in a continuation unless its execution context is suitable.
Use streaming handlers deliberately
A string handler buffers the response body and is convenient for modest JSON payloads. Streaming handlers are useful when you need to process a large body incrementally, but they transfer responsibility for consuming and releasing the response resource. Read the stream to exhaustion, or close or cancel it as appropriate; otherwise resources may not be reclaimed promptly and orderly client shutdown can be delayed. Oracle’s Java HTTP package documentation describes the HTTP API’s response-body handling model.
Keep service-specific behavior at the API boundary
The reusable client and JSON conversion are generic pieces. Authentication schemes, pagination, rate limits, error payloads, retry policy, and endpoint-specific success codes are not universal HttpClient behavior. Implement those from the service’s published contract, and keep them separate from the mechanics of building a request and converting JSON.
