On supported builds, turning it off disables HD Bluetooth codecs for that connection. That may be the switch behind this story’s improvement—but the exact phone, speaker and setting are unknown, so it is not a guaranteed fix or a universal sound-quality ranking.
Check the paired speaker’s HD Audio setting
Connect the speaker to your Android phone, then open its Bluetooth device settings. Android’s documented path is Settings > Connected devices > Bluetooth: tap the gear icon beside the paired speaker and clear HD Audio. The option is available on supported device builds, and manufacturers may use different menu names or locations. Android’s Bluetooth documentation describes this control for a paired audio sink such as a speaker or headset.
Disabling HD Audio disables HD Bluetooth codecs; it does not make every speaker sound better. If the option is absent, your phone’s software may not expose it, or its menu may differ. Check the phone maker’s current support instructions for model-specific directions.
What the switch changes—and what it does not
Bluetooth audio uses a codec to encode audio on the phone and decode it on the speaker. The phone is generally the source and the speaker the rendering device, or sink. The devices negotiate a codec they both support, and Android manufacturers can set their own codec priorities. Android lists SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD and LDAC among supported codec options; SBC is the mandatory Android Bluetooth audio source codec. Android’s platform documentation explains the supported codec context.

The HD Audio checkbox and the codec selector in Developer options are related controls, but documentation does not establish that they are the same switch. Clearing HD Audio is a simple paired-device setting; Developer options may let you select a codec or adjust codec-related behavior, subject to what the phone and connected audio device support.
When to look at codec settings
Developer options codec selector
Some Android phones expose a Bluetooth Audio Codec selector in Developer options. Available choices depend on the phone and the connected speaker’s capabilities. A selection the speaker does not support may be unavailable or may not remain selected. LDAC playback quality
LDAC requires support from both ends of the connection. Where available, an LDAC playback-quality setting may offer a choice that balances playback quality and connection reliability. Nothing recommends Adaptive as its default LDAC playback-quality choice for smooth playback; that is manufacturer guidance, not a promise that the option exists or behaves identically on other phones and speakers. Why a codec change is not a universal sound fix
There is no established “worst” codec for every phone-speaker combination. Codec support, manufacturer implementation and default priorities differ, and a codec change cannot correct every cause of poor sound. The available documentation explains settings and compatibility; it does not establish that one codec always sounds best or that changing a setting will measurably improve every speaker.

- Confirm that both the phone and speaker support the codec you want to use.
- Consider whether the device offers a playback-quality versus connection-reliability choice.
- If the sound remains poor, do not assume the codec is the cause; the setting alone is not evidence that the speaker or connection is faulty.
What about iPhone?
Do not look for Android’s same HD Audio control on an iPhone. Nothing’s support material says iOS does not support LDAC, and it does not establish an equivalent Apple setting for disabling HD Bluetooth codecs. That does not prove there is no other iPhone audio control; it means the Android instructions above should not be presented as an iPhone path.
