Android can make routine work feel smoother by keeping two apps in view, quieting selected distractions, showing where screen time goes, or helping with small planning tasks. The right setup depends on your device, Android version, apps, account and location; these features can reduce friction, but they do not guarantee a productivity boost.
1. Keep two compatible apps in view with split screen
Split screen is useful when a task requires frequent back-and-forth: for example, checking a message while writing a note, or referring to a web page while drafting. Both apps remain visible, so you can work without repeatedly switching between them. The exact steps are device-specific, and some apps may not support the layout.
How do I use split screen on a Pixel phone?
- Open Overview, the screen showing your recent apps.
- Tap the icon for the app you want to use first.
- Select Split screen.
- Choose the second app from Overview or the app launcher.
These are Google’s documented Pixel-phone steps, not universal instructions for every Android model. Google’s Pixel split-screen instructions explain the device-specific flow.
Can I save an app pair?
On Pixel Fold, Google documents saving a split-screen pair from Overview and adding it to the home screen or taskbar. Pixel Tablet also supports saved app pairs, along with resizing and repositioning apps and dragging text or images between compatible apps. Some Pixel Tablet steps require Android 15 or later. Check the instructions for your device before relying on a particular control or gesture. Google’s Pixel Fold guidance and Pixel Tablet guidance describe those features.

2. Use desktop windowing with a larger display
On supported devices, desktop windowing lets you open apps in separate windows and move or resize them, rather than treating the display as a single full-screen app. Connecting an external display can provide more room; some supported setups offer a separate desktop session. This can suit work that benefits from several visible windows, but availability and the experience vary by device.
Google says apps automatically open in desktop windowing when a supported device is connected to an external keyboard and trackpad. Those accessories are optional for the broader idea of a larger-screen workflow, not a universal requirement. Verify that your device supports the feature and check Google’s current desktop windowing and external display guidance for setup details.

3. Protect a work block with Focus mode
Focus mode in Digital Wellbeing lets you choose apps to pause. While it is on, you cannot use those apps and they do not send notifications, which can make a planned work block less interruption-prone. It only addresses the apps you select; it is not a system-wide guarantee against every distraction.
You can turn Focus mode on manually, schedule it, or take a temporary break from it. To find the controls, open Settings and look for Digital Wellbeing & parental controls; names and paths may vary by device. Google’s Focus mode instructions cover the available controls.

4. Review usage and set app timers
Digital Wellbeing can show time spent in apps, how often apps were opened, and how many notifications they sent. That information can help you spot which apps are taking attention, then decide whether a limit makes sense. It is a way to inspect habits and set boundaries, not evidence that a particular timer will produce a specific result.
Daily app timers let you set a limit for an app. The steps can differ across devices, and some work or school accounts might not support app timers. Open Settings and search for Digital Wellbeing to find the usage dashboard and available limits. See Google’s Digital Wellbeing overview and app timer information for details.

5. Delegate small tasks to Gemini
Gemini can help with lightweight tasks such as drafting a note, planning an event, making a list or reminder, managing some phone settings, and working with Google apps. For instance, you might ask it to turn a few errands into a checklist or help shape rough notes into a clearer draft. Treat the result as a starting point: review it, especially when details or timing matter.
Gemini may not be available for every language, device, account or location, and the tasks it can complete depend on the connected app and setup. Check Google’s Gemini apps and capabilities information for current availability.
