Quake’s levels make its unusual mechanics part of how players move, fight, explore, and solve encounters. Instead of treating three-dimensional space as scenery, the maps use height, moving platforms, water, hazards, secrets, and boss arenas to change the choices players make. In John Romero’s retrospective account, a room that could have been built in Doom had not yet taken full advantage of Quake’s spatial possibilities.
Verticality turns rooms into routes
Quake’s defining design shift was not simply that its world looked three-dimensional. Its levels could make different heights into connected parts of a route: a player might travel beneath a bridge, then find a way up to its surface. Romero put the goal plainly: “The goal of Quake’s level design was that we needed to explore verticality as much as possible,” so “you could be under a bridge but be on top of that bridge later.” He described this approach retrospectively in a GamesRadar+ interview.
That distinction is best understood as a design emphasis, not a claim that Doom never used height or secrets. Romero’s comparison is that Quake’s spaces could make movement between spatial planes central to navigating a room. A ledge can be a route, a lookout, a barrier, or a destination depending on how the player reaches it.
Climbing makes geometry playable
Romero recalled routes that used wall pegs or protruding stones as makeshift steps. Players could climb them to reach a health pickup or escape a room. These optional or situational climbs turn surfaces into part of the level’s movement system: the player reads the wall, judges a sequence of jumps, and gains a reward for mastering it.

The community-maintained Level Design Book’s Quake metrics reference lists baseline vanilla values of 320 units per second maximum run speed, a 32 × 32 × 56 collision hull, and 244 units maximum running jump distance. These are design-reference measurements rather than an official id Software specification; the page presents some values as maxima or estimates. Its practical caution is that a critical route should not depend on specialty ramp, grenade, or rocket jumps.
Moving platforms make traversal a timed event
A moving platform or elevator changes a route from a static jump puzzle into a sequence that unfolds over time. Romero recalled a platform ride and an elevator that descended underwater, dealt damage along the way, and surfaced near health. The tension came partly from uncertainty: players did not know exactly what the ride would bring. Geometry becomes an authored event, and the player must endure, react, or prepare while the space moves around them.

Romero’s example of E2M6, Dismal Oubliette, shows a different way to pace danger inside unusual space. In a 1998 Game Developer feature, he described a descent in a room that stops before escalating threats arrive: a Shambler, spikes, a Fiend, and Zombies. The threats make the room’s changing state matter; descent is not merely a way to move between floors. Romero summarized the intended pressure in the same feature: “The gamer must be in constant fear.”
Water changes combat without switching it off
Underwater spaces preserve much of Quake’s familiar combat, but change its conditions. Romero said movement is slower underwater while weapons remain usable, which lets players keep fighting rather than making submersion a purely navigational interlude. The exception he singled out is the Lightning Gun: firing it into water can electrocute the player, unless the player is invulnerable.

That interaction creates a concrete tactical tradeoff. Water is not an automatic no-combat zone, but it can make a normally useful weapon dangerous to its user. Players must account for both the enemy and the medium they are fighting in.
Secrets reward map reading and return visits
Hidden spaces give exploration a mechanical payoff. Romero said secrets encouraged players to spend more time understanding the maps, and could provide a powerful weapon earlier than expected. Some secret exits led to an entire additional level, turning close inspection into a route to more content rather than only a collectible.

In this way, secrets support both immediate advantage and replay value. A player who learns to question walls, ledges, and dead ends may find resources or passages that change how much of the level they see.

Some encounters ask players to interpret the arena rather than rely on ordinary shooting. Romero recalled that Chthon could not be killed by shooting; players had to use lightning against him. He also said defeating Shub-Niggurath required attention to environmental clues and an inference about how the encounter worked. These are specific examples, not a rule that every Quake boss is solved the same way.

The larger design effect is that the arena becomes part of the combat problem. A player must understand what the space permits, identify which environmental element matters, and connect that observation to an action.
Why the spaces remain legible
Unusual geometry and layered threats work only if players can make sense of where they are and what to watch. Romero’s general design advice emphasizes landmarks as cues for both personality and navigation, alongside traps that keep players alert. Landmarks help distinguish one space from another; hazards and encounters give those spaces a changing rhythm.
These principles are useful context, not proof that every original Quake map followed one documented production recipe. Romero’s 2016 retrospective notes that the thinking visible in the 1995 Quake FAQ differs substantially from the game that ultimately shipped. His later account of making SIGIL describes a workflow for a Doom project, not evidence that Quake’s original maps were made through that exact process.
