If an Android tablet won’t recognize a microSD card, first check that the exact tablet model supports the card’s capacity and format. Then safely reseat and inspect the card, test it in another device, and back up any readable files before considering a format. These checks help distinguish an incompatible card or format from a failing card or tablet slot—without risking data unnecessarily.

1. Confirm the tablet supports the card

Check the tablet’s exact model number in its manual or official specifications. Verify both that it has a microSD slot and that the card’s capacity is within the model’s limit. A card that works in another device may still exceed this tablet’s supported capacity. Samsung notes that not all of its devices support microSD, and supported card types and capacities vary by device: Samsung’s microSD compatibility and format guide.

Do not treat card labels alone as proof of compatibility. Samsung publishes these general card-class figures: microSD up to 2 GB, microSDHC over 2 GB up to 32 GB, and microSDXC over 32 GB up to 2 TB. Those figures describe card classes; they do not mean every tablet supports cards up to 2 TB.

2. Safely remove, inspect, and reseat the card

If the card appears in the tablet’s storage settings, use the available unmount or eject control before removing it. On Samsung Galaxy devices, menu names can vary by software version and carrier; follow the tablet’s own manual for the correct path, tray location, and power state. Samsung’s SD-card troubleshooting guide covers its device-specific steps.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
  1. Use the tablet’s storage settings to unmount or eject the card if that option is available.
  2. Locate the tray outline and use the specified eject tool. Do not insert the tool into a microphone or speaker opening.
  3. Check the card and tray for dust, debris, or visible damage. If needed, gently wipe the card with a soft cloth.
  4. Place the card in the correct orientation and reinstall the tray carefully. Do not force a card or tray that resists movement.
  5. Restart the tablet and check whether the card appears in storage settings.

Samsung UK also recommends checking for damage or dust and gently cleaning the card before reinstalling it: Samsung UK’s detection troubleshooting steps. If the card or tray is physically stuck, stop rather than pulling or prying; Samsung directs users to service for a stuck card or tray.

3. Test the card in another reader or device

Try the card in another compatible phone or tablet, or use a computer with a built-in SD slot or an external card reader. A reader lets a computer access the card for testing; it does not show that the card is compatible with the tablet.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
  • The card is not recognized elsewhere: card damage becomes more likely, though a failed reader or adapter can also affect the test. Try another known-good reader if available.
  • The card is recognized elsewhere: investigate the tablet’s capacity and file-system requirements, then consider tablet software or slot trouble.

Cross-testing narrows down the likely cause but cannot prove it. Samsung notes that a computer may recognize file systems an Android device does not. Its troubleshooting guide recommends testing the card in another device before formatting it: Samsung’s SD-card troubleshooting guide.

4. Check the file system—and protect files before formatting

File-system support depends on the tablet model. For the Samsung Galaxy devices covered by its US support guidance, Samsung lists FAT32 and exFAT as supported, with exFAT preferred, and says NTFS and APFS are incompatible. Treat that as Samsung-specific guidance, not a universal rule for every Android tablet. Confirm the format requirements in your model’s documentation.

Samsung says FAT32 is available for cards under 32 GB and cannot store a single file larger than 4 GB. That limit matters for large videos and other individual files. The card’s capacity class and the tablet’s maximum supported capacity are separate compatibility checks.

Formatting erases the card’s data. Before formatting, copy off any files you can still read and verify that the backup is accessible. If the tablet recognizes the card but reports a problem, Samsung recommends backing up important data and testing the card in another device before formatting: Samsung’s formatting and backup guidance.

5. Check tablet software if the card works elsewhere

If the card is compatible and readable in another device, install any available tablet software update and restart the tablet. On Samsung devices, menu labels vary, so use the model-specific instructions rather than assuming a particular settings path.

Samsung UK also describes testing in safe mode, which disables third-party apps, to check whether an app may be contributing to the problem: Samsung UK’s troubleshooting guide. Safe mode can help identify a software conflict; it cannot repair a damaged card or hardware reader.

6. Decide whether the card or tablet needs service

  • One card fails across multiple compatible readers or devices: the card may be damaged. If important data is on it, avoid repeated formatting attempts and consider professional data-recovery help before replacing it.
  • Several known-good, compatible cards fail in the same tablet: the tablet’s slot or reader may need assessment. Contact the tablet manufacturer or a repair service.
  • The card or tray is stuck: do not force it. Arrange service to avoid damaging the slot or tray.

Samsung recommends considering a replacement card if it remains unrecognized and seeking service for a stuck card or tray: Samsung’s SD-card troubleshooting guide.

Choosing a replacement or test card

If testing points to a faulty card, match any replacement to the tablet’s specifications before buying. Check supported capacity and required file system first; a faster card cannot overcome an unsupported capacity or format. Samsung recommends microSDXC for high-resolution video and says regular microSD or microSDHC may suffice for less demanding uses, but the tablet’s model-specific limit remains decisive: Samsung’s card guidance.
