For a broad search for a mini PC to run local AI, 32 GB of RAM is a reasonable starting tier—not a guaranteed minimum or promise that every model will run comfortably. The amount you need depends on the model and its quantization, context length, concurrent requests, runtime overhead, and whether the graphics processor shares system memory. A model fitting in memory is also not the same as running at a satisfying speed.
Why there is no single RAM requirement
Model size is only one part of the memory budget. The runtime also needs memory for context and working buffers, while the operating system and other applications use some of the machine’s capacity. Longer conversations and simultaneous requests can raise the requirement substantially.
As one bounded example, Ollama’s Gemma 4 E2B quickstart lists a download of about 7.2 GB and recommends 8 GB of available VRAM or Mac unified memory. The download size is not a general RAM requirement, and that recommendation should not be applied to other models or mini PCs.
What changes how much memory a model needs?
Model and quantization
Different models and quantization formats have different memory footprints. A model’s download size can help describe its stored files, but it does not by itself tell you how much memory the runtime needs while generating responses. Check the requirements for the specific model and runtime you plan to use.

Context length
Context length is the token history available to the model, including prompt and conversation content. Ollama states, “Setting a larger context length will increase the amount of memory required to run a model.” Its FAQ explains that context settings affect memory use; a long-context workload can require much more than a short prompt.
Concurrent requests
When a runtime handles multiple requests at once, memory needs rise with the workload. Ollama says required RAM scales with parallel requests multiplied by context length. If you expect several users or jobs to share a mini PC, size for that combined workload rather than one short conversation.

System RAM, VRAM, and unified memory
On Apple Silicon, CPU and GPU draw on a shared unified-memory pool. Ollama documents Apple Metal acceleration and M-series support, and its Gemma guidance is expressed as available unified memory. On other mini PCs, an integrated GPU may reserve or share system RAM; the amount depends on the particular hardware and configuration. Check the exact system’s memory arrangement and available capacity rather than assuming all installed RAM is available to the model.
How to choose a practical memory tier

Before buying, check the exact mini PC’s usable memory after system needs, processor and graphics support, memory bandwidth, cooling, and whether its RAM can be upgraded. A processor support listing does not prove that every PC built around that processor has the same performance or upgrade options. Ollama lists AMD Ryzen AI Max processors in its AMD hardware documentation, but that listing alone does not establish a particular mini PC’s model performance.

Check what the runtime actually loads
For Ollama, run ollama ps to inspect processor offload and whether a model is placed on the GPU, CPU, or both. Placement can affect performance, so the installed RAM figure alone does not describe how the model is running.
Ollama reported one measured example on September 23, 2025: Gemma 3 12B at a 128K context used 21.4 GiB of VRAM with its newer scheduler. That result applies to that model, context, runtime scheduling example, and VRAM measurement; it is not a general mini-PC RAM recommendation.

What to verify before settling on a mini PC
- Model and quantization: identify the exact model variant you intend to run.
- Context: estimate the longest prompt or conversation you need, not just typical short use.
- Concurrency: account for requests that may overlap.
- Memory architecture: confirm how much memory is shared with or reserved for the iGPU, if applicable.
- Usable capacity: leave headroom for the operating system, runtime, and other applications.
- Performance and upgradeability: check the exact model’s memory bandwidth, cooling, and upgrade support; capacity alone does not establish speed.
