Hall effect joystick modules can replace the standard sticks in supported Xbox One and Xbox Series controllers, but this is a soldering repair—not a thumbstick-cap swap. The module must match the controller’s exact model and revision, and you should plan to recalibrate it after installation.
What replacing the sticks involves
A joystick module is soldered to the controller’s circuit board. Replacing it means opening the controller, removing the original module, clearing its solder holes and fitting and soldering the new one. It is advanced board repair, not a plug-and-play upgrade.
The ConsoleMods Wiki guide covers Hall effect module replacement for Xbox One and Series controllers. Its guide describes the procedure, but it does not provide a complete compatibility chart for every controller board revision. Confirm that a part is listed for your exact controller before buying it, and check any uncertain model or revision details with the seller or manufacturer.
For Xbox Series X/S controllers, iFixit’s joystick replacement guide also shows a difficult, solder-required repair. The standard replacement part in iFixit’s Series X/S listing is a potentiometer assembly, not a Hall effect upgrade; the listing also says the joystick cover is not included. A replacement part that fits is not necessarily a different sensor technology.

Which replacement type should you choose?

Hall effect sensing avoids contact between the sensing magnets and sensor, unlike a potentiometer’s wiper rubbing against a resistive track. That reduces wear in the sensing mechanism; it does not make the entire physical stick assembly immune to wear or failure. No specific lifespan or drift-rate figure is established by these sources.
Tools and skill required
The ConsoleMods guide lists a hot-air station with a desoldering pump or a desoldering iron, a soldering iron, Kapton tape, isopropyl alcohol, cotton swabs and a USB cable for PC connection. Its procedure includes exposing the motherboard, shielding nearby components from hot air, removing the old module, clearing the through-holes, cleaning the area and soldering in the replacement.

Use instructions for your exact controller and module; a general guide is not a substitute for model-specific directions or soldering experience. If you are not comfortable with board-level desoldering, have a repair technician do the work rather than risk damaging the controller.
Calibrate and check the controller after installation
Recalibration is part of the repair, not an optional finishing touch. For Series X/S joystick replacement, iFixit says to use the Xbox console or Xbox Accessories software on PC and follow its recalibration option. The ConsoleMods guide describes connecting by USB, checking for an Xbox Accessories update, calibrating each stick, then checking circularity and deadzones.

- Connect the controller to a PC by USB and open Xbox Accessories. Install an available app or controller update if prompted.
- Follow the app’s recalibration option for the replaced stick; calibrate each stick as directed.
- Check the stick’s inputs, circularity and deadzones. If calibration produces strange behavior, the ConsoleMods guide advises repeating calibration for the affected stick.
For the specific GuliKit TMR kit listed by iFixit, update controller firmware before calibrating. Its stated model and calibration exclusions apply to that kit; they do not prove that every Hall effect installation on those controllers is impossible.

- Identify the controller’s exact model and, where applicable, board revision before ordering.
- Confirm that the listing names that controller—not just “Xbox” or a neighboring generation—and verify uncertain fit details with the seller or manufacturer.
- Check whether the part is a complete joystick module or only a potentiometer assembly, and whether covers or other pieces are included.
- Confirm that calibration is supported for your controller and chosen module, and that you can access the required console or PC software.
Compatibility and availability depend on the specific part listing and can change. The available guides do not establish one Hall effect module as universally compatible with Xbox One, Series and Elite controllers.
