Start by identifying what your projects must run on, then install only the tools that support that work. A practical baseline is an up-to-date operating system, the required compiler or SDK and runtime, an editor or IDE, a terminal, and Git. Windows developers can work natively, use WSL, or use both; Mac developers often need only Apple’s Command Line Tools unless their work requires full Xcode.

1. Choose your development target before installing tools

List the platforms you need to build for or deploy to: Windows, Linux, macOS or iOS, the web, or another target. Then check the project’s setup instructions and your team’s requirements. Those determine which SDKs, compilers, runtimes, package managers, and command-line tools you need; there is no universal set of language tools every developer should install.

Use these questions to choose a setup:

  • Target platform: Does the project need to run on Windows, Linux, macOS or iOS, or several platforms?
  • Project requirements: Which compiler, SDK, runtime, package manager, and tool versions do the project instructions specify?
  • Team workflow: Do the project scripts and team tools assume Windows commands, Linux commands, or a particular IDE?
  • Tool scope: Will command-line tools do the job, or does the work require a full IDE?
  • File location: Will your files live on the same operating system as the tools that work on them?

2. Update the operating system and choose its supported development path

Install available operating-system updates before adding development tools. The next step depends on your laptop’s operating system and the projects you plan to build.

Windows: native tools, WSL, or both

Use native Windows tools when you are building for Windows or depend on Windows-native tooling. Choose Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) when a project expects Linux commands, packages, or a Linux development environment. Both workflows can coexist, but keep each project’s files with the tools that primarily use them.

Microsoft’s WSL development environment guide covers enabling WSL, installing a Linux distribution, updating packages, and setting up an editor, terminal, and Git. It describes wsl --install as a straightforward starting point, but the prerequisites and supported options can depend on your Windows version. Follow the current Microsoft instructions for your system rather than assuming the command or prerequisites are identical on every PC.

macOS: Command Line Tools or full Xcode

For many command-line development tasks, Apple’s Command Line Tools package is enough. Apple says it includes the macOS SDK, manual pages, and toolchain binaries shipped with Xcode. On a fresh macOS installation, running a command such as git may prompt you to install the Command Line Tools. See Apple’s Command Line Tools installation guidance and check its current release information because versions change.

Install full Xcode if your work needs Xcode itself or commands that Apple ships only with it, including xcodebuild and xctrace. Xcode also bundles command-line tools such as clang, notarytool, xcodebuild, and xcrun; the separate Command Line Tools package does not include every Xcode-only command.

Linux: follow your distribution’s documentation

Linux setup varies by distribution, release, and hardware. Use the chosen distribution’s official documentation for system updates, repositories, compilers, security settings, and supported drivers instead of applying Windows or macOS instructions to Linux. Install and update Git through the distribution’s native package manager; Microsoft’s Git installation guidance covers platform-specific approaches.

3. Keep project files where their tools can work with them

If you use WSL, file placement matters. Microsoft’s guidance is to “Store your project files on the same operating system as the tools you plan to use.” For Linux command-line tools running in WSL, keep the project in the WSL file system; for Windows tools, use Windows storage. Accessing files across the Windows–Linux boundary is possible, but Microsoft warns that it can significantly slow performance.

This is a workflow rule, not a requirement to choose one operating system for every project. If a project is primarily built with Linux tools in WSL, keep that project on the Linux side. If it is built with Windows tools, keep it on Windows storage. Microsoft explains the distinction in its WSL file-storage guidance.

4. Install the project’s toolchain, not every toolchain

For the first project, use its documentation to identify the required compiler, SDK, runtime, and package manager. Install versions compatible with the project and your target platform, then confirm that the documented commands work in the environment where you will build and test. Do not install unrelated language runtimes just in case: the right list depends on the work.

5. Set up an editor, terminal, and Git

Choose an editor or IDE that fits the project and workflow. Microsoft distinguishes Visual Studio for native Windows app development from Visual Studio Code, which supports cross-platform source editing and an extension ecosystem. These are workflow examples, not the only suitable editors. Windows users following a WSL workflow can consult Microsoft’s WSL setup guide for editor and Windows Terminal setup; its Windows development-environment guidance explains the native Windows and WSL distinction.

Install Git using the instructions for your operating system, then configure your author identity and the authentication method required by your code-hosting provider. Authentication steps can change, so use that provider’s current instructions. Keep passwords, tokens, private keys, and other secrets out of source control. Microsoft’s Git setup guide covers installation approaches and related setup topics, including credential management, ignore files, and line endings.

6. Add optional tools only when a project needs them

Containers, databases, GPU support, external-drive access, and graphical Linux applications can be useful, but they are not part of every developer’s minimum setup. Add the relevant component when a project, workload, or team workflow calls for it.

  • Containers: Add container tooling when the project uses containerized development or deployment workflows.
  • Databases: Install or configure a database when the application needs one for development or testing.
  • GPU tooling: Follow the platform’s supported setup when your work needs GPU acceleration; it is not a general programming prerequisite.
  • External drives or GUI apps in WSL: Configure these only if your workflow requires them. Microsoft lists them among further WSL setup topics in its development environment guide.

7. Validate the setup with a small project

Before moving your main work onto the laptop, clone a small repository or create a starter project with the language or framework you intend to use. Follow its documented commands rather than relying on a generic build recipe.

  1. Open the project in your chosen editor and confirm it can access the files.
  2. Open the terminal for the intended environment: Windows, WSL, macOS, or Linux.
  3. Run the project’s documented dependency-installation, build, and test commands.
  4. Check that Git reports the expected author identity and that you can authenticate to the repository host if the project is remote.
  5. Confirm the result targets the intended platform and that the project’s required runtime or SDK is available.

If a command works in one terminal but not another, first check which operating system, shell, and tool versions that terminal is using. For WSL projects, also check whether the files are stored on the same side as the Linux tools.
