Java application security is broader than Java syntax. The DZone Refcard Java Application Vulnerabilities: What They Are and How to Fix Them covers dependency maintenance, server configuration, input and output handling, credentials, sessions, authorization, and transport security. Its rankings come from WhiteHat Security’s 2017 Application Security Statistics Report, so use them as historical context—not as a current threat ranking.
This guide translates the Refcard’s advice into a development and deployment checklist, while flagging examples that require verification against current Java, framework, container, and security-standard documentation.
What the DZone Refcard says—and what its numbers mean
The free DZone Refcard by Ryan O’Leary, identified as Vice President of WhiteHat Security’s Threat Research Center, was written to help Java developers understand common vulnerabilities and address them early in development. The source is DZone’s “Java Application Vulnerabilities” Refcard #248.
Its prevalence claims are drawn from WhiteHat Security’s 2017 reporting as presented by the Refcard. The underlying report methodology and raw dataset are not supplied on the page, and the Refcard does not document a recent review. Treat the figures and section rankings below as dated observations.

| Historical item | How the Refcard presents it | How to use it today |
|---|---|---|
| Insufficient transport-layer protection | 94 percent in the Refcard’s discussion of a critical vulnerability class, attributed to WhiteHat Security, 2017 | A historical signal that encrypted connections and backend links deserve explicit review; not a current prevalence estimate |
| SQL injection | 81 percent serious-to-critical ratio, attributed to WhiteHat Security, 2017 | A historical severity observation; the Refcard’s main examples in this guide address broader application controls |
| Unpatched libraries | Rank 1 in the Refcard’s list | Maintain dependency governance, but establish present risk with current advisories and an inventory |
| Application misconfiguration | Rank 2 | Review production settings, exposed administration, debugging, error handling, and permissions |
| Cross-site scripting | Rank 3 | Apply context-specific output encoding and validation in the current framework |
Dependency and server-configuration failures
Unpatched libraries
A vulnerable third-party component can put an otherwise careful application at risk. Keep dependencies current, monitor vulnerability reports, and use a dependency manager such as Maven to make versions visible and repeatable. Software composition analysis can inventory components and flag known issues.
Do not assume that every advisory applies to every deployment. Confirm the affected version, reachable code path, configuration, exposure, and practical impact before prioritizing remediation. Record the decision and upgrade or replace components when the risk is applicable.
Exposed administrative servlets
The Refcard uses Axis administration and SOAP-monitoring functionality as an example of dangerous administrative exposure when acceptable authentication is absent. The secure choice described there is to disable those servlets. In a current application, remove unused management endpoints and place any necessary administration behind a separately controlled management surface, with authentication and authorization verified for the actual container and framework version.
Excessive permissions
Grant the application, service account, modules, and data stores only the permissions required by documented functionality. Remove permissions left over from testing or an earlier feature. Review both operating-system and application-level privileges, because a narrow web authorization rule cannot compensate for an unnecessarily powerful process identity.

Global error handling disabled
Uncaught exceptions should be handled by a production error policy that returns a generic response rather than stack traces or implementation details. Preserve detailed diagnostics in access-controlled server logs. Check framework defaults and error-page mappings after deployment; a development setting that is harmless locally can disclose paths, queries, class names, or configuration in production.
Debug enabled in production
Disable debug modes in deployed environments and prevent request parameters or other attacker-controlled inputs from turning them back on. Treat debug flags as deployment configuration, not as a feature exposed through the application interface. Verify the effective setting in the running environment, including container-level and framework-level switches.
Input, output, and interpreter risks
Cross-site scripting
Encode untrusted output for the context in which it is inserted: HTML text, an HTML attribute, a URL, CSS, or JavaScript each has different escaping rules. A single generic encoder is not a universal solution. Prefer the current framework’s context-aware templating and encoding facilities, and use allowlist validation where the field has a constrained format.
Validation reduces unexpected input; it does not replace output encoding. Review every sink, including error messages, client-side data, redirects, and rendered attributes, and test the production rendering path rather than only controller code.

Interpreter injection
When untrusted data reaches an interpreter, first define the narrow set of accepted values and reject everything outside it. Keep data separate from commands or expressions whenever the API allows that design. Where data must be emitted into an interpreter’s syntax, apply encoding for that specific interpreter and context. Do not rely on filtering characters with an informal blacklist.
Denial of service from unbounded readLine()
Reading an attacker-controlled stream until an unlimited line ending can consume memory or tie up a worker. Set an explicit maximum length and stop processing when the bound is exceeded. A safe-read-line helper or equivalent bounded reader should make the limit consistent across call sites; choose a limit based on the protocol’s legitimate maximum and the service’s resource budget.
URL redirector abuse
Do not send users to a URL copied directly from a request parameter. Accept a short destination identifier, map it on the server to an allowlisted destination, and reject unknown or unauthorized identifiers. If external destinations are genuinely required, validate scheme, host, path, and policy before redirecting, and avoid allowing alternate URL syntaxes to bypass the check.
Credentials and unpredictable values
Cleartext and hardcoded passwords
Never embed production credentials in source code or store them as cleartext. Base64 is an encoding, not protection. Keep secrets in an appropriate secret-management system, restrict access, rotate them, and prevent them from appearing in source control, logs, exception messages, or client responses.

The Refcard includes historical cryptographic examples. Password storage, key derivation, encryption, and key-management choices change as standards and platform guidance evolve, so verify the algorithm, parameters, library, and operational process against current authoritative guidance before implementing an example.
Improper pseudo-random number generation
Use a cryptographically secure pseudorandom number generator whenever unpredictability matters—for example, session identifiers, reset tokens, or security challenges. The Refcard illustrates Java’s SecureRandom. Do not substitute a general-purpose or predictable generator, timestamps, counters, or user-controlled values for security tokens.
Sessions and authorization
Insufficient session expiration
Define an idle timeout appropriate to the application’s sensitivity, invalidate server-side session data and associated tokens when it expires, and consider a separate hard lifetime in addition to sliding expiration. The Refcard’s 15-minute example is source-era guidance, not a universal current requirement; choose and document a value through a risk assessment.
Test expiration from the user’s and attacker’s perspectives: an expired cookie must not revive server-side state, a refresh request must not silently extend a hard timeout, and logout or forced revocation must invalidate usable tokens wherever they are checked.

Missing access strategy
Authorization belongs on every sensitive operation, not only on navigation menus or a single front-end route. Define which identity or role may perform each action and enforce that rule on the server and at service boundaries. Avoid exposing servlets by class name or relying on URL obscurity where that can bypass the intended access-control layer.
Test both permitted and denied cases, including direct requests to an endpoint, object identifiers belonging to another user, disabled accounts, and calls made without a session.
Transport protection
Insufficient transport-layer protection
Use secure transport for authenticated and sensitive connections, including traffic between application components and backend services. Encryption only from a browser to a proxy is incomplete if the proxy then sends credentials or sensitive data onward over an unprotected link.
When TLS terminates at an intermediary, re-encrypt traffic from that intermediary to the destination hosts where confidentiality and integrity are required. Verify certificate validation, hostname checking, protocol policy, and downgrade behavior in the actual deployment rather than assuming a load balancer’s front-end setting protects every hop.

A practical remediation workflow
- Inventory the attack surface. List dependencies, public endpoints, administrative functions, interpreters, redirects, streams, sessions, identities, secrets, and every network hop.
- Classify the control. Decide whether the fix belongs in dependency governance, application code, server configuration, identity policy, or deployment architecture.
- Remove unnecessary exposure. Disable unused servlets and debug features, reduce permissions, and close unneeded routes before adding compensating controls.
- Constrain attacker-controlled data. Apply allowlists and length limits at input boundaries, then encode data at each output or interpreter context.
- Protect identity and secrets. Use unpredictable security tokens, bounded session lifetimes, server-side authorization, and managed credentials.
- Verify every hop and environment. Check production error handling, effective debug settings, TLS on backend links, dependency versions, and authorization behavior in integration tests.
- Reassess after changes. A library upgrade, proxy change, new endpoint, or framework migration can alter applicability and should trigger a focused security review.
Limits of the Refcard’s guidance
The Refcard is educational guidance, not a product recommendation or a substitute for current vendor and standards documentation. Some examples refer to older application-server behavior, configuration labels, and terminology. Confirm exact settings and APIs for the Java version, framework, servlet container, libraries, and deployment platform you operate. Its historical rankings should guide questions to ask—not serve as a measurement of today’s Java risk.
