It lets people with a personal Microsoft account create images from text prompts and make designs or photo edits on a phone. The current app-store descriptions list capabilities including stickers, background removal, object erasing and collages; availability and features can vary by platform and region.
What Microsoft announced
On July 17, 2024, Microsoft said Designer was generally available with a personal Microsoft account and launched it as a free mobile app for iOS and Android. Sumit Chauhan, then identified as President of Microsoft’s Office Product Group, wrote: “Designer is now available as a free mobile app (iOS and Android).” Microsoft’s announcement described creating images and designs from words and editing images while on the go.
What you can do with Designer on a phone
Microsoft’s store listings describe Designer as an AI-assisted tool for creating designs and editing photos. The listed functions differ somewhat by platform and are vendor descriptions, not independent performance findings.
Generate images and make designs
The Android listing includes generating images from text descriptions, creating banners and assembling collages. Apple’s US listing describes creating social posts and other designs, and lists templates. A prompt can be a starting point for a visual, while templates provide a prepared layout to customize.

Edit photos and create stickers
The Google Play listing names sticker creation, erasing unwanted objects, removing or blurring backgrounds, adding filters, adjusting brightness and resizing. Apple’s US listing version history records AI image-editing options such as erasing, cutting out, moving and focusing on parts of an image, as well as AI text rewriting. These are platform-listed features; the exact tools can change with app updates.

Accounts, cost and availability
Microsoft’s current Android listing says Designer is free with a Microsoft account, notes 5 GB of free cloud storage for the account, and flags in-app purchases. That is not a promise that every feature or amount of use is free or unlimited. The 5 GB figure describes the account’s storage, not a Designer-only allowance. Store details can differ by platform and region.
The Android listing, last updated February 11, 2026, showed 5M+ downloads when accessed on September 27, 2026. This is Google Play’s displayed download band only, not an audited count of people or total installations across iOS and Android. Check the Google Play listing for current Android details. The US Apple App Store listing applies to that storefront; listings and version histories may differ elsewhere.

Designer’s standalone mobile terms say the software relies on online services, which may not be available in every region. They authorize installation on iOS/iPadOS and Android devices and specify personal use rather than use in the course of trade or commerce. Check the terms and your local store listing for current availability and conditions.

Standalone Designer is not the same as Copilot Create
Microsoft also describes a separate Copilot Create workflow, which supports starting from text descriptions or templates and continuing work across mobile, web and desktop apps. Examples include a social post or newsletter banner. Do not confuse its eligibility rules with the standalone Designer app’s 2024 launch: Microsoft Support says an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription is needed for the Copilot Create feature, and notes that some Personal, Family, Premium and Pro capabilities have usage limits that can change. Microsoft’s Copilot Create guidance concerns that separate feature, not every use of the standalone mobile app.
