A good surge protector for a PC is a safety-certified unit whose electrical rating can handle the equipment you will plug into it, with a protection status you can check. Look for a UL 1449 listing on the actual product—not just in a store description—and don’t choose by joule rating alone. If you also need time to save work and shut down during a power outage, choose a UPS sized for your equipment instead.
What to look for in a PC surge protector
Confirm it is a surge protector, not just a power strip
A basic power strip adds outlets; it does not necessarily provide surge protection. UL Solutions describes a power strip as “just an extension cord with a lot of outlets.” A surge protector includes circuitry intended to limit the effects of voltage spikes. Check the product label or manufacturer specifications to confirm that the exact model provides surge protection.
Verify the safety listing and protection rating
For a US purchase, look for a UL 1449 listing on the device or its manufacturer documentation. UL Solutions recommends checking certification and notes that a lower suppressed-voltage rating is preferable. Terminology and how specifications are presented can vary, so consider the documented rating alongside the safety listing rather than treating one advertised number as a complete measure of protection. Match capacity to your equipment
Add up the electrical load of the devices you plan to connect and keep it within the protector’s stated rating. The number of outlets does not indicate how much equipment the unit can safely support. Follow the manufacturer’s limits, and do not connect one power strip or surge protector to another.

Treat joules as one specification, not a buying threshold
A joule rating describes surge-energy absorption capacity, but there is no universal minimum that makes a protector suitable for every computer. Portland General Electric also cautions against choosing by joules alone because testing methods are not standardized. Compare the documented surge and suppressed-voltage ratings in context with certification, capacity, and the manufacturer’s instructions. Surge protector or UPS?
A surge protector helps limit electrical surges; it does not supply power when the electricity goes out. A UPS includes a battery and can provide runtime to save work and shut down. Select one based on the load of the PC and other equipment you intend to keep powered. HP’s guidance on protecting a computer from power surges explains the distinction.

Check the rest of your setup
Use a properly grounded outlet
Plug the protector into a properly grounded three-prong outlet. Portland General Electric warns that an outlet protector depends on proper grounding; if you have a two-prong outlet or are unsure whether it is grounded, ask a qualified electrical contractor to assess it rather than relying on an adapter. Consider connected data lines
If your PC setup uses Ethernet, coaxial cable, or telephone lines, surges may also travel along those connections. Where suitable equipment is available, consider compatible data-line protection as part of the setup. See Eaton’s surge protector buying guide.

Choose practical placement and inspect the unit
Check that the cord reaches the outlet, the plug and housing are not obstructed, and wider power adapters will fit the outlet spacing. Inspect the cord and case periodically. Replace a unit if it is damaged, has melted or discolored plastic or burn marks, becomes unusually hot or buzzes, or shows that protection is no longer available. Follow the model’s instructions for interpreting indicators and replacement.
How to compare models without overreading the specs

For a product search, use a specific phrase such as “UL 1449 listed surge protector power strip for desktop PC,” then verify the model’s details with its manufacturer. For example, CyberPower’s official B602BRD page describes a protector for computers and peripherals and lists UL 1449 4th Edition, 500 joules, and 800V clamping voltage. Those are manufacturer-listed specifications for that model, not evidence that it is the best choice for every PC. Check the current listing and product documentation before buying. When to replace or upgrade
A protector can reduce risk, but it cannot promise protection against every electrical event. Replace it if it is physically damaged or its indicator says protection has ended, following the manufacturer’s model-specific guidance. If your home has grounding concerns or you want protection at the electrical panel, consult a qualified electrician; whole-home protection is a separate installation rather than a substitute for checking the PC’s connected equipment.
