Application integration connects applications so they can coordinate business processes and exchange transactional data. Data integration combines, replicates, or transforms data from different systems into a unified dataset for operational use or analysis. The first is usually centered on workflows and individual transactions; the second is usually centered on data pipelines, storage, and analysis. Real-time processing, batch processing, and product boundaries can overlap, so choose by the behavior and controls your project needs—not by a product label alone.
What is the difference between application and data integration?
The key difference is the outcome. Application integration helps separate applications work together as part of a business process. Data integration brings information from multiple sources together, or makes it available across systems, for a unified view or further processing.
Gartner defines application integration as enabling independently designed applications to work together, including through data consistency, orchestration, and unified access. Oracle describes data integration as gathering information from disparate sources to create a more unified view across an organization. These are different primary purposes, even when the same platform can support both.
| Comparison point | Application integration | Data integration |
|---|---|---|
| Primary outcome | Applications coordinate a business process or exchange operational updates. | Data from separate systems is combined, replicated, or made available as a unified dataset. |
| Typical unit of work | A workflow step, event, or individual transaction. | A data movement or processing job, potentially handling larger collections of records. |
| Common timing pattern | Often real-time or event-driven. | Often batch-oriented, especially when preparing datasets for analysis; real-time data integration is also possible. |
| Typical concern | Process orchestration, application coordination, and transaction handling. | Moving, reconciling, transforming, or exposing data for analysis or other uses. |
| Examples of patterns | APIs, connectors, message queues, and event triggers can link systems; the appropriate mechanism depends on latency and coupling needs. | ETL/ELT pipelines, replication, and federation are common patterns. |
The table describes common patterns, not rigid rules. IBM characterizes application integration as commonly real-time and involving smaller datasets, while data integration is commonly batch-oriented to create datasets for analysis. Oracle also notes that data integration can occur in real time. Latency alone therefore does not determine which category a project belongs to.

When should you choose application integration?
Choose application integration when a change or event in one system must cause another system to act as part of an operational process. Gartner’s definition emphasizes making independently designed applications work together, while Google Cloud describes its Application Integration service as a way to integrate business systems and exchange data.
Examples
- Send a new marketing lead to a sales system.
- Synchronize a transaction between systems that participate in the same business process.
- Coordinate steps across SaaS applications, such as triggering one action after another system records an event.
APIs, connectors, queues, or event triggers may be used to implement these flows. Select a mechanism based on required latency, delivery behavior, and how tightly the participating systems should depend on one another.

When should you choose data integration?
Choose data integration when the goal is to move, combine, replicate, or expose information across systems for migration, operational access, or analysis. SAP describes data integration as data exchange between communication partners without depending on a business process, and identifies federation and replication as approaches. IBM describes a common goal as creating a dataset that supports analysis.
Common use cases
- Loading source data into a warehouse or data lake.
- Replicating data between systems or environments.
- Federating data so it can be accessed across sources without treating each exchange as a business-workflow step.
- Consolidating data for analysis or migration.
For ETL/ELT data pipelines, Google Cloud’s product-selection guidance recommends Cloud Data Fusion. That recommendation is specific to its Google Cloud product guidance; it is not a general rule that every data-integration project requires that product.

How should you decide between an API or iPaaS and ETL/ELT?
Start with the result the system must produce. If an event in one application needs to trigger or coordinate action in another, evaluate an application-integration flow. If data must be consolidated, replicated, or prepared as a dataset, evaluate a data-integration pipeline. Some projects need both: for example, an operational flow may update an application while a separate pipeline prepares broader data for analysis.
- Define the outcome. Write down whether success means completing a business action between applications or producing an integrated dataset.
- Set the latency and volume requirements. Decide how quickly changes must arrive and how much data each run or event may carry. Do not assume that real-time automatically means application integration or that batch automatically means data integration.
- Map source and destination systems. Check whether the required applications, databases, warehouses, or other endpoints are supported by the candidate platform.
- Specify transformation and orchestration needs. Determine whether business-process steps, data mapping, or data-quality controls are central to the work and where those responsibilities must run.
- Define operational safeguards. Establish expected behavior for retries, delivery guarantees, idempotency, schema changes, security, auditability, and monitoring before selecting an implementation.
- Compare total operating fit. Assess connector coverage, observability, scalability, deployment model, governance, and ongoing operating cost alongside initial capability.
Can one platform handle both?
Sometimes. Modern integration platforms can combine capabilities that cross the category line, but support for a feature does not automatically mean the platform is a good fit for every workload. Google Cloud Application Integration is a managed, serverless iPaaS with connectors, mapping, and integration flows; Google describes it as connecting and managing applications and data. Oracle says Oracle Integration includes application integration as well as some data-integration features.

Evaluate the specific product and workload rather than relying on the platform’s category name. Verify that its connectors, transformation engine, deployment model, and operational controls meet the project’s requirements. A platform that can run both scheduled and event-driven flows may still have limits that matter for a particular pipeline or workflow.
