Find that model’s service manual before starting. One system may require motherboard removal to reach retention clips, while another uses a specific screw-and-standoff sequence.
Before you start
- Identify the motherboard model and revision. For a prebuilt PC, identify its system model too; its service manual may specify steps that differ from a retail motherboard guide.
- Shut the computer down, disconnect power, and let the heatsink cool. A hardware maintenance manual warns that a VRM heatsink may be very hot; follow your system’s service instructions for any additional disassembly prerequisites.
- Locate the manufacturer’s instructions for the VRM heatsink. Do not assume that a procedure for another board applies to yours.
Why the removal method varies
VRM heatsinks can be held by screws, captive screws, retention clips, or a combination of hardware and thermal material. The documentation illustrates how much the procedure can differ: Lenovo’s ThinkCentre P3 Tower Gen 2 guide says the motherboard must be removed from the chassis to access the heatsink’s retention clips (Lenovo ThinkCentre P3 Tower Gen 2 hardware maintenance manual). EK’s guide for the Aorus Z490 Xtreme D describes removing three standoffs and three screws (EK Aorus Z490 Xtreme D guide). These are model-specific examples, not universal instructions.
Some heatsinks may also stick to thermal pads or adhesive thermal tape. A community repair discussion mentions these possibilities, but the motherboard’s own documentation should take precedence (Tom’s Hardware discussion).
Remove the heatsink cautiously
- Follow the documented access steps. Check whether the manual requires removing the motherboard, a cover, or another component before reaching the heatsink fasteners.
- Inspect every attachment point. Identify the screws, captive screws, clips, and any shared cover or shroud. Release only the fasteners and clips specified for your board.
- Support the board and lift gently. Once the documented fasteners are released, lift the heatsink without levering against the PCB. If it resists, stop and check for a missed screw, clip, cable, or shared cover. Do not force it; the heatsink may still be attached or held by thermal material.
- Protect the thermal pad. Try to keep it clean, intact, and in its original position. If it tears or cannot be reused, use only a replacement with the thickness and dimensions specified for your motherboard. The available sources do not establish a generic VRM-pad size.
Reinstall before powering on
Restore the heatsink and all original fasteners before powering the system, unless the manufacturer explicitly documents another permitted configuration. The heatsink and thermal pad help transfer heat away from VRM components such as MOSFETs and chokes, as described on the ASUS PRIME B760M-A AX D4 product page. Lenovo also recommends the heatsink for certain CPU and GPU configurations in its ThinkCentre P3 Tower Gen 2 documentation; that recommendation applies to the listed configurations, not to every motherboard.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What to check for exact instructions
The motherboard model and revision—or the prebuilt system model—are needed to determine the screw locations, clip-release direction, any required disassembly, and the correct thermal-pad specification. The sources here do not establish those details for an unspecified board, nor do they provide a universal torque value or resolve warranty implications. If you cannot find the correct manual, ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider for instructions for your exact model before removing the heatsink.
