Its current package system uses RPM packages with DNF (including a graphical DNF Package Manager), replacing the customized APT/Synaptic workflow described in older guides. As of a July 2026 mirror listing, downloadable images included KDE, MATE, XFCE, and KDE Darkstar editions, although image availability can differ by mirror and change over time.
What PCLinuxOS is
PCLinuxOS is a desktop-focused Linux operating system distributed as bootable ISO images. You can start a computer from the image, use the live environment, and decide whether to install it without immediately changing the existing operating system. Installation media may be written to a USB flash drive or used on optical media where supported.
The project describes PCLinuxOS as a rolling-release distribution. In normal use, you keep the installed system current through regular updates instead of reinstalling a new release for every routine update. The project’s guidance also warns that leaving updates for a long time can make the eventual update path more difficult, so follow the update procedure for the version already installed.
Which PCLinuxOS editions are available?
The project identifies KDE Plasma, MATE, and XFCE as official desktop editions; other desktops may be community editions. A mirror index observed on July 29–30, 2026 listed these 64-bit files:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How to choose an edition
- Choose the desktop environment whose workflow and appearance suit you.
- Compare the software included in each image and consult current support documentation.
- Use the live session to check your display, network, sound, graphics, and peripherals before installing.
- Do not assume one edition is faster, easier, or better for older hardware: the available evidence does not provide current comparative tests.
Package management: RPM and DNF today
PCLinuxOS uses RPM packages and DNF for package management. Community documentation says DNF5 has been used since September 2025, and installation ISOs created after September 2025 include a custom graphical DNF Package Manager by default. It provides basic searching, installation, updating, and removal operations.

Older articles often describe PCLinuxOS as using customized APT and Synaptic tools. That describes the historical stack and should not be treated as the current default for a newly created installation. If you maintain an older installation, use instructions written for that installation’s actual package-manager setup rather than blindly applying newer or older commands.
Where software comes from
The project maintains a central software repository mirrored in several locations. Installing from that repository lets the package manager resolve dependencies and keep packages aligned with the rolling system.

Can you install Debian .deb files?
No. .deb is Debian-family packaging and is not a native PCLinuxOS package format. Look for an RPM package built for PCLinuxOS, or use a distribution-neutral format when the application’s publisher and PCLinuxOS documentation support it.
What about software outside the repository?
It may be technically possible to install outside RPMs, but project guidance cautions that they can introduce dependency conflicts and interfere with future rolling updates. Prefer the official repository. Where an application is not available there, the documentation identifies AppImage or Flatpak as possible alternatives; evaluate each application’s instructions, permissions, update method, and compatibility before using it.

Installing PCLinuxOS from USB
A suitable USB flash drive can hold bootable installation media, and you can reuse one you already own. The available sources establish USB use but do not establish a required capacity, brand, or model, so verify the ISO’s size and the current media-writing instructions before selecting a drive.
- Download the current 64-bit ISO from a project-listed mirror and check the release information supplied with that download.
- Use a trusted image-writing utility to write the ISO to the USB drive. This erases the drive’s existing contents.
- Back up files from the target computer and confirm that you understand whether the installer will use the whole disk or selected partitions.
- Boot the computer from the USB device, usually by choosing it in the firmware boot menu.
- Run the live session first and test essential hardware.
- Start the installer only after confirming the edition and storage plan, then complete the installer’s prompts.
- After the first boot, configure networking and apply the current update procedure for your installation.
Hardware requirements and what is actually confirmed
The project’s About page contains figures of a 512 MB minimum and 2 GB recommended RAM, plus 12 GB minimum and 20 GB or more recommended disk space, alongside an x86_64 Intel, AMD, or VIA processor. That page’s surrounding copy refers to PCLinuxOS 2013, so those figures are legacy guidance rather than verified requirements for 2026 images. A current, authoritative minimum hardware specification is not established here.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Practically, confirm that the computer supports 64-bit booting, has enough storage for the chosen installation and updates, and works with the live image’s graphics, wireless, audio, and input hardware. Treat the live session as the decisive compatibility check.
Keeping a rolling installation healthy
- Update regularly using the package-management procedure documented for your installed image.
- Do not mix instructions for the old APT/Synaptic stack with the current DNF-based setup.
- Prefer repository packages so dependencies and future updates remain coherent.
- Read notices before major system changes and keep backups of important data.
- If an update fails, record the exact error, avoid deleting packages at random, and consult current PCLinuxOS documentation for the installed version.
Who should consider PCLinuxOS?
PCLinuxOS is a reasonable choice if you want a traditional desktop Linux system, live-media testing, and a rolling update model without periodic reinstallations. It is less suitable if you specifically need Debian .deb packages, a fixed-release lifecycle, or hardware requirements that have been freshly published and independently verified. The best edition depends on the desktop environment and software you prefer, not on an unsupported claim that one is universally superior.
Frequently Asked Questions
