The PIC12F675 is programmed through five-wire ICSP, not through its application oscillator. Connect VPP/MCLR, ICSPDAT, ICSPCLK, VDD and VSS correctly; select the exact PIC12F675 in MPLAB; then either build firmware with XC8 or load an existing HEX file with MPLAB IPE. Most failures come from wrong-device selection, target power, ICSP pin loading, configuration bits, or leaving GPIO pins in analog mode.

Use the official PIC12F675 product page and the exact package data sheet before relying on physical pin numbers or electrical limits.

What “programming” means

Four separate tasks are often confused:

  1. Writing firmware: creating C or assembly source.
  2. Building firmware: compiling source into a HEX file.
  3. Programming the chip: transferring HEX and configuration data through ICSP.
  4. Making the circuit run: supplying power and configuring oscillator, MCLR, GPIO, analog and peripheral functions.

If you already have a HEX file, you do not need to compile it. If the programmer cannot identify the device, changing C code will not solve the immediate problem.

Know the PIC12F675 before wiring it

This legacy 8-bit device implements the first 1K × 14-bit program-memory locations, 64 bytes of RAM, 128 bytes of data EEPROM, six GPIO-capable pins, a 10-bit ADC with four channels, Timer0, Timer1, a comparator and a nominal 4 MHz internal oscillator. Reset is at address 0x0000; the interrupt vector is at 0x0004. The internal clock is calibrated through OSCCAL, so “4 MHz” is nominal rather than a precision timing guarantee.

GP2 AN2, external interrupt, Timer0 clock, comparator output Useful for a basic LED test after digital initialization.
GP3 Input-only GPIO, MCLR, VPP Never treat it as an output; its role depends on MCLRE.
GP4 AN3, oscillator output/clock output, timer gate FOSC settings determine whether it is available as GPIO.
GP5 Oscillator input/clock input, Timer1 clock External-clock choices can remove it as ordinary GPIO.

Do not substitute documentation for PIC12F629, PIC12F683, PIC12F615, PIC12F508/509 or the rfPIC12F675 without checking the exact part. The related Microchip rfPIC12F675 document illustrates shared functions, but it is not a replacement for the ordinary PIC12F675 data sheet.

What you need

  • A genuine PIC12F675 in the correct package.
  • A compatible Microchip programmer, with current support verified. PICkit 5 is the current official candidate, but confirm PIC12F675 support and target-voltage requirements before purchase.
  • MPLAB X IDE for projects, and MPLAB XC8 for C.
  • MPLAB IPE for a prebuilt HEX file.
  • A stable target supply, common ground, short ICSP wiring and local supply decoupling.

Wire ICSP first

Programmer signal PIC12F675 function
VPP/MCLR GP3/MCLR/VPP
PGD or ICSPDAT GP0/ICSPDAT
PGC or ICSPCLK GP1/ICSPCLK
VDD Target supply
VSS Ground

These are the five required ICSP signals described by Microchip’s ICSP documentation. Confirm physical package pin numbers in the ordinary device data sheet.

  • Connect programmer and target grounds.
  • Determine whether the programmer supplies VDD or the board does; do not drive the target from two supplies.
  • Keep ICSP traces short. Avoid capacitors, series diodes and strong pull-ups on GP0/GP1; Microchip’s PCB guidance explains why they can corrupt clock or data edges.
  • Use an appropriate MCLR reset network. Do not tie MCLR directly to VDD if the programmer must raise it to VPP.

Create an MPLAB X and XC8 project

  1. Choose File → New Project.
  2. Select Microchip Embedded → Standalone Project.
  3. Select the exact device, PIC12F675.
  4. Select the connected hardware tool, or no tool if you are only building.
  5. Select XC8, add a C source file, and set configuration pragmas.
  6. Choose Run → Build Main Project.
  7. Check the output for a successful build and the generated HEX in the production directory.

Menu labels vary by MPLAB X release. XC8 device-family behavior also varies; select the exact part rather than copying settings from a superficially similar PIC. See Microchip’s XC8 family guidance. Old MPASM projects may require migration of directives and include paths; do not copy assembly for another PIC unchanged.

Configuration bits that determine behavior

Setting Effect
FOSC Selects internal RC, external clock or crystal/resonator operation and affects oscillator-pin GPIO.
WDTE An enabled watchdog resets code that never executes CLRWDT.
PWRTE Adds startup delay that can improve power-up behavior.
MCLRE Selects GP3 as MCLR or digital input.
BOREN Enables brown-out resets when supply voltage is marginal.
CP/CPD Code-protect program memory/data EEPROM.

Configuration bits are programmed with firmware; they are not run-time variables. Verify names against the installed XC8 header and selected PIC12F675. Preserve OSCCAL calibration information and do not overwrite calibration-related data accidentally.

Minimal XC8 LED test

This example uses GP2, disables analog and comparator functions, and assumes an LED with a current-limiting resistor. Confirm configuration names in your installed header.

#include <xc.h>

#pragma config FOSC = INTRCIO
#pragma config WDTE = OFF
#pragma config PWRTE = ON
#pragma config MCLRE = OFF
#pragma config BOREN = ON
#pragma config CP = OFF
#pragma config CPD = OFF

#define _XTAL_FREQ 4000000UL

void main(void)
{
    ANSEL = 0x00;
    CMCON = 0x07;
    GPIO = 0x00;
    TRISIO = 0b00000000;

    while (1)
    {
        GP2 = 1;
        __delay_ms(500);
        GP2 = 0;
        __delay_ms(500);
    }
}

GP3 remains input-only regardless of the direction-register write. _XTAL_FREQ calculates compiler delays; it does not calibrate the physical oscillator. LED polarity must match whether the pin sources or sinks current.

Program an existing HEX with MPLAB IPE

  1. Open MPLAB IPE and select PIC12F675.
  2. Select the connected programmer and target-voltage behavior.
  3. Load the HEX file.
  4. Inspect the configuration-word values shown by the tool.
  5. Click Program.
  6. Require a final Verify successful result before testing.

Loading a HEX is not compiling source. A programmer cannot fix C syntax, an incorrect device selection or bad configuration bits.

Digital GPIO: disable analog and comparator modes

On reset, pins shared with ADC or comparator functions may not behave as digital inputs. For a digital pin, set the corresponding TRISIO direction, clear its ANSEL analog bit, and disable the comparator when it owns the pin. This interaction is why a program that only writes TRISIO can appear dead.

  1. Set the selected pin as an input in TRISIO.
  2. Select the channel in ADCON0.
  3. Set its ANSEL bit.
  4. Choose an ADC clock that meets the device timing requirement; the related Microchip documentation specifies a minimum TAD of 1.6 µs.
  5. Select voltage reference and enable the ADC.
  6. Allow acquisition time.
  7. Set GO/DONE, wait for it to clear, then read ADRESH:ADRESL.
unsigned int adc_read(unsigned char channel)

    while (ADCON0 & 0b00000010) { }
    return ((unsigned int)ADRESH << 8) | ADRESL;
}

This is a teaching pattern, not a universal driver. Complete initialization must match the selected channel, reference and clock, and the measured voltage must remain within permitted limits.

EEPROM: initial data, run-time data and preservation

The 128 EEPROM locations are addressed 0x00 through 0x7F. These are different operations:

  • Embedding initial EEPROM bytes in a HEX file.
  • Reading and writing EEPROM from firmware.
  • Preserving user or calibration data during firmware updates.

Do not assume every programming operation preserves EEPROM. Read or export it before bulk updates, store a version marker and checksum, and avoid repeatedly writing one address in a fast loop. The PIC12F629/675 programming specification describes EEPROM mapping and HEX handling.

Troubleshooting

“Device not found”

  1. Confirm the exact device and package.
  2. Check programmer support and current device algorithms.
  3. Measure VDD at the PIC and connect VSS to programmer ground.
  4. Check that GP0/ICSPDAT and GP1/ICSPCLK are not swapped.
  5. Check GP3/MCLR/VPP.
  6. Disconnect circuitry holding ICSP lines high or low.
  7. Confirm target voltage is within both device and programmer limits.
  8. Check orientation and inspect for damaged or counterfeit parts.
  9. Update programmer firmware/device support if applicable.

Microchip explains device-specific algorithms and custom-PCB connections in its programmer interface guidance.

Programming fails

  • Unstable or insufficient target voltage.
  • Both board and programmer powering the target.
  • Incorrect MCLR/VPP wiring.
  • Excessive capacitance or loading on ICSP lines.
  • Wrong package, damaged device or unsupported algorithm.
  • Programming voltage or erase restrictions for the exact revision.

Programming succeeds but the LED stays off

  • Check LED polarity, resistor and physical GPIO selection.
  • Clear the relevant ANSEL bit and disable the comparator.
  • Check TRISIO, FOSC, MCLRE, watchdog and brown-out settings.
  • Check whether the chosen pin became an oscillator or ICSP pin.
  • Check oscillator calibration and supply voltage.

ADC reads zero or full scale

  • Verify channel, ANSEL, input direction, ADC enable and reference.
  • Allow acquisition time and meet ADC clock timing.
  • Check sensor ground and input voltage.
  • Ensure ICSP or another peripheral is not using the measured pin.

Code runs at the wrong speed

  • Check internal-versus-external oscillator configuration.
  • Check _XTAL_FREQ and OSCCAL handling.
  • Account for voltage, temperature and oscillator tolerance.

Voltage and erase caveat

For affected older PIC12F/16F devices, Microchip documents that below 4.5 V bulk erase may be unavailable and row erase or additional restrictions may apply. This is not a universal statement about every PIC12F675 revision or programmer. Check the exact programming specification; an MCU’s operating-voltage range is not automatically its programming or erase-voltage range. See the 8-bit programming limitations.

Debugging expectations

The PIC12F675 does not offer the same debug experience as newer PIC16F1 devices. Interrupt single-stepping, register inspection and production-target debugging can be restricted, while ICSP pins are shared with the application. An LED, spare GPIO, serial adapter or logic analyzer is often the quickest way to observe behavior. Programming support does not guarantee unrestricted source-level debugging.

Should you still use a PIC12F675?

Choice Best when Trade-off
Keep PIC12F675 Existing PCB or firmware, six GPIOs and four ADC channels are sufficient, and 1K words are adequate. Legacy limits, small memory and restricted debugging.
Newer PIC12/PIC16 You need more memory, PWM, UART, enhanced ADC, better debugging or modern low-voltage behavior. Pinout and configuration are not drop-in compatible.
ATtiny-class MCU You value a broad hobbyist ecosystem. Different architecture, tools and voltage behavior.
Small ARM MCU You need substantially more memory or peripherals. More complex hardware and software.

Choose by pin compatibility, peripherals, programming voltage, package availability, tool support and EEPROM behavior—not clock speed alone.
